Default A dairy diet

I was wondering, I noticed there's diets out there that tout certain food groups like vegetarians/vegans tout veggies and fruit. Paleo and Atkins tout meat but always dairy as the proper source to lose weight but are there any pro-dairy diet out there that argue centering a diet around dairy for weight loss? Do they work?

I have not seen one. But my gut on this is that it might work well if you eat high dairy with a lot of fresh veg but keep your processed carbs low (candy, cake, pasta, bread, rice).

For me, and this could be personal, I would pile on the pounds if I ate high fat dairy and processed carbs (pizza being the perfect example). But without the processed carbs I would get less of an insulin spike and probably be OK.

Try it and see.

I have seen university studies here and there that claim control groups who had no dairy lost less weight than groups who did have dairy. But always, weight loss was accompanied by other changes in diet and exercise.

Atkins doesn't tout meat. Atkins is a low carb, medium protein, high fat diet.

Too much dairy can lead to kidney stones and calcium deposits in other areas of your body. You'd have to eat a huge amount to get enough protein for the day and it doesn't have much in the way of vitamins and minerals.

Babies are introduced to solid foods around 6 months and don't thrive if they are only given milk for an extended time. Why are you considering this?

I think dairy is pretty good in terms of protein. Greek yoghurt, milk and cheese are excellent examples.

And you won't get kidney stones from dairy. You might from calcium supplements. But not dairy.

The risk with a high dairy diet, just like the Atkins, is that if you add processed carbs to a high saturated fat diet, you will pile on the pounds. Fast.

That's why low fat, low processed carb is awesome for weightloss. I strive for high good (unsaturated) fat (omega 3s, olive oil, avocado etc.), low processed carb as a compromise. But could stretch to high all fat, low processed carb in a pinch, which is what you are suggesting as does Atkins (for all carbs - not just processed - which is a little silly).

I'd be interested to see more research on this, as I love few things more than a big glass of full-fat milk with a handful of fresh blueberries. I do indulge occasionally (Keeping it within my WW points) and I don't notice much difference on those days vs. days where I don't have dairy.

You don't need research. You are your own experiment. If it doesn't work, try something new. You can move. You are not a tree!!

I think balance is key. I don't know how much of a benefit a high dairy diet would provide. I would have more fruits and vegetables and just have a balanced amount of dairy. Milk at breakfast, yogurt at lunch, cheese on your dinner. I don't see any reason to eat high dairy. I remember reading in the past that our bodies don't absorb calcium as well from dairy anyway and we absorb it better from vegetables that are high in it.
