Glad you are having success with this, Skini. Hopefully, we can do this together. I was doing low carb the past few years and lost approx. 40# but it quit working for me so have counted calories, but find that this is a welcome change from both of those plans and don't have to do much planning.

I almost never use rtd shakes, because I haven't found any I like, but today I was extra lazy, so I made all three shakes at once into a peach jello dessert I invented.
The recipe makes 2-3 servings 2 servings = 160 calories, 0 fat, 26g protein (8.5g carb) 3 servings = 107 calories, 0 fat, 17g protein (8 g carb) Recipe: 1cup boiling water 1pkg sugar free jello any flavor ( I used peach) 2 cups unflavored, unsweetened, nonfat greek yogurt Cold water (optionaland as desired) In a bowl, dissolve jello into hot water. Whisk in greek yogurt. If you want more volume, or a softer texture, whisk in cold water. The more water you add, the softer the gel. Divide mixture into 2-3 serving dishes (or leave in bowl and divide before serving). Refrigerate until set. I made mine in just the one bowl, and did not use any cold water today (usually I like a very soft, extra wiggly jello). Since the whole recipe counts as 2-3 shakes, I just ate from the one bowl and counted it as my 3 shakes when the bowl was empty. |
Kaplods, that sounds delicious! I'll bet that would be great with orange jello, sort of like a creamcicle.
How long have you been doing this plan and have you had success? Shabby, I've also done the low carb plan but always fall off the wagon after a few weeks. I begin to feel deprived due to lack of carbs. Yes let's do this together ladies and hopefully we can get this topic active again! |
Hey Kaplods, I just noticed that you're from WI. I spend half the year in MN and half in FL. It sounds like it was a brutal winter up there! I feel for you!
Hubby can also work from FL so that's how we make it work. I thank God for every day that I can wake up in FL! Next week we're headed back to MPLS. Hope the snow is done! :) |
Good morning Skini and Kaplods.
Shake recipe sounds yummy, Kaplods. I just made some of that veggie protein taco filling. It fits the guidelines for entree so am going to put it with lettuce and make a taco salad. Will also use some of it to make burritos for another meal. I hear you about the brutal winter. Hopefully, it is over. I live in the Midwest and it is nice today but is supposed to get in the 30's the latter part of the week, so may have to cover some of my plants. Have a great day. |
Hey Skini, Shabbi!
Skini, to answer your question, I'm not really sure, because I tend to use this diet as a "back up plan." On too-low carb (like Atkins induction low) I lose fast, but get crazy sick (and it's not just induction flu, because it doesn't get better and doesn't disappear after two weeks). My health problems (an assortment, including fibromyalgia) also flare with too many carbs (supposedly most carbs are inflammatory), and my hunger goes through the roof. I feel and lose best on a "low-but-not-too-low" paleo, but on sick, achey days I would feel too lousy to make even a salad. I couldn't find enough easy-to-grab-and-eat foods, and I found myself intensely (insanely) craving carbs, and the carbs I wanted most were the worst for me, sugar and wheat (both severely aggravate a lot of my health issues). So when I read the book (about a year ago, I think), I thought to myself, "this would be ideal for my bad days." I've been dabbling with the plan ever since. If I mostly stay away from the starchy veggies I do ok. The weight loss is a little slower, but it's better than having no back-up plan and reaching for every carb in the house. Weather (barometric pressure, humidity, and temperature) changes are my biggest fibromyalgia trigger. If the change is dramatic and sudden, the fibro really kicks my tuckus. I feel like I've been hit by a truck. This winter has been nothing but sudden, dramatic changes (hubby and I have talked about trying to find a way to snowbird to Arizona or Florida - we're both on disability, so it could work in theory). As a result of feeling lousy, I had difficulty adhering to any plan. My middle sister is getting married in June, and I'm im the wedding. The dresses are strapless in watermelon (not quite red, not quite pink). I don't look good in reds or pinks, although I look better in the dress than I would have thought, but I'd like to lose at least a few pounds (or even just make sure there's no gain) before the wedding. I've decided to commit to TSD exclusively for the next month, and maybe For June as well. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to use TSD as a back-up or as my only plan after the wedding. Some of my foods will be homemade, but I'm making sure they fit all of the TSD guidelines. |
When I first say this plan, I was one of those who thought "shouldn't eat processed foods", because you hear that so much. I've done Atkins although I never seem to be able to stick with it very long. Atkins works great for my blood sugar, but I just can't do it long term.
When I saw Kaplods on here, I decided to read the thread and see what it really was about. I've seen you on other threads on 3fc and you don't buy into just anything. Years ago DH daughter and her family moved in here for almost 3 yrs. Before they moved in, I would eat 2 meals and have a WW frozen dinner one a day. Money got tight when we ended up taking care of all of us and my diet fell by the way side. The Simple Diet will fit into my life so easily. DH and I eat one meal a day together around 2ish. I like the fact that I can have fruit and veggies with the tv dinners. I'm using the Atkins shakes so I had a nice shake with 1/2 a banana and 1/4 c frozen blueberries this morning. My main meal with DH is usually balanced. But today he wanted pizza. He its his with only cheese and sauce so to save calories, that is what I ate. I made a small coleslaw with to go with it and finished it off with a serving of cantaloupe. I had a tv dinner Michalina's Gourmet dinner that fit the calorie and fat guidelines. I will have another shake to night. I just don't have time nor do I need a 3rd shake. I'm not going to order the book right now. I want to see how this goes right now. I would like join this group and will try to check in here too. |
Welcome Pattygirl,
I too like the fact that I can have fruits and veggies on this plan. Atkins was too strict for me. I like that this plan takes the guesswork out of dieting. You eat 2 entrees, 3 shakes and fruits and veggies. What could be easier? I also add in a protein bar some days when I get the urge to cheat. It takes care of my sweet cravings. Good luck and keep posting! :) |
Thanks for the welcome Skini mini.
I'm diabetic and I want to eventually make my own low carb frozen meals too, but right now I think I need the structure of this way of eating. I got my fasting blood sugar down with Atikins Induction, but I have to face the fact I just can't do low carb long term. Thus the reason to try this to see how it works with my blood sugar. I am pleased to say that my fbs was down to 124 mg this morning from 139 yesterday even after having a high carb day with the pizza. I can't imagine how much better it would work with doing mostly low carb meals. Reading the thread has helped a lot. I didn't read all and will probably go back and finish reading as it is good to see what everyone is doing. kaplods I'm not a big Greek yogurt fan, but I plan to try it with jello. I hadn't thought of doing that. I try to eat it any way because of the benefits. Did I understand correctly that you use that in place of a shake? |
Hi Patty,
I'm so sorry to hear that you are diabetic. Both of my parents were which makes it all the more important for me to get this weight off. I know that you have to be extra careful with your diet so I wish you the best of luck with this plan. Together we can do this! :) Good morning Shabby and Kaplods! Hope you're having a good on plan day! Stay strong ladies! |

I experimented with my last portion of yogurt jello and put it in my blender with some frozen fruit (strawberries) and a bit of sugar free lemonade. It tasted good and had a lot of volume, but the texture was strange because there were bits of soft jello, suspended in the drink. I've also used greek yogurt (or unflavored whey protein powder), frozen fruit, and almond or coconut milk (choosing the brands that contain 40-45 calories per cup) to make shakes. From what I've read, Dr. Anderson isn't too keen on folks making their own entrees either, and while I get that there are possible pitfalls (you have to measure and calculate the calorie, fat, and protein counts carefully and meticulously), I would go nuts if I couldn't cook at all. I avoid wheat, because I'm sensitive or mildly allergic. I'm not celiac, but if I eat more than a bite of bread or few bites of pasta, my face, hands, and feet itch and the skin around my nose, eyebrows and chin get puffy, red, and flakey and I may get a few huge pimples. It is really hard to find decent tasting frozen dinners that don't contain wheat. Traces of wheat don't trigger symptoms, so I will buy frozen dinners if the wheat is listed at the end of the ingredient list (such as the tiny amount of wheat in soy sauce). I think the biggest danger in making your own entrees (aside from lazy and incorrect math) is portion creep and extra licks/bites (either while cooking or afterward) that add up fast. When I do make my own entrees, I portion them into individual containers and if they're very tempting, I stick them in the freezer right away. It's somehow less tempting in the freezer. |
Good morning to everyone - Skini, Kaplods, Patty. Glad all of you are doing well.
Looks like we are all around the same height - 5'2" except Kaplods. I am doing well on plan - was down a # this morning. Patty, I am prediabetic without meds so really have to watch my food, too. Congrats on your fbs lower number. My fbs this morning was 103 but usually is in the 80's. I ate a purchased entree last evening and feel like the sodium is really bothering me today. I think if I had eaten a homemade one, it would have been better. And also ate an apple too late last evening so is the reason for the increase in fbs reading. It seems that I am highly allergic to sodium. It really bothers me anymore. Kaplods, I'll bet it is really hard to find entrees without wheat. I know it is really hard to find them that are low in sodium. Will make up some entrees today and portion them out. I have lots of recipes that give the nutritional values so is really easy to do this plan with them. Skini, I find that the bars are a special treat and do take care of the sweet cravings, too. Had a Greek yogurt and strawberries for breakfast. Will have salad and my veggie taco mix for lunch and probably a purchased entree this evening or if I get my homemade one done, will have that. Hope all have a wonderful day. |
Yes Shortys Unite! Sorry Kaplods we'll make you an honorary member of the Shortys Club!
I didn't weigh today, I'm going to try and wait until Wed. When I'll have been on the plan for a week. How long have you all been on the plan? |
