Default Hair Dare

I want a new haircut. I want an honest answer. Are highlights still popular or are they fading out? If I can figure out how to post some pics, I'll put some of my haircut choices on here. I need some opinions. My husband has none. He would love to see me in a new style but no opinions. I feel I can't ask hairstylist at the salon this question because they make tons of money on hair color and highlighting.

Yah I used to always have highlights but just too much work and money. They always need to be touched up... but it could be nice for a change! I just cut my hair all off for a change and I love it! Well I cut it off about a year ago, but I still love it!

I may hold off. Who knows. I have about 5 haircuts I want to show but I can't figure out how to get them off my word document to here.

What is your hair like? Is it stick-straight, naturally wavy? Coarse, fine, thick, thin? How long is it?

My favorite hair-stylist advice came from a friend who is a hair stylist. She suggested I go with a style that compliments characteristics of my hair. For instance, my hair is naturally wavy so she suggested I go with a long, layered look to enhance the curl.

My hair currently is cut to a bob just above my shoulders. It is not thick. It is not extremely fine. It does have a little courseness to it but not too shabby. Mostly I straighten or curl my hair because it pretends to be wavy in some spots and straight in some spots and doesn't know what it wants.

I had a haircut I liked, but I had it for 2 years. This summer, hubby encouraged me to try something different. Since it was the FIRST time I EVER heard him suggest short hair, I ran with it. I didn't go in with any advice (only for them to change it, etc). I came out with a bob. I had a bob some years ago and didn't like it. So this time I want to go in with a few suggestions. I want to knock em out on the first day back to work (school) and I want to have a new do for my dh's class reunion coming up. I have about 5 ideas. I just can't show them to anybody. My best girlfriend can't recieve attachments in her email and hubby is no help. I don't want to show my coworkers cuz it is a suprise.

If you are unable to post the pics you want to show us, you could see if they are on a hair style site and post the link.

With the heat, short hair is really tempting. My hair is very thick and very naturally curly. I leave it long. When I had it short, it was comfortable, but looked like an afro, or too short , and looked like boy's hair. You could also go to a stylist and have a consultation before actually making any moves. As far as choosing a stylist that you know won't suggest things simply to make a buck, you could ask friends... As far as highlites, I like them, but they are way to much work for me, and tend to look too brassy. ( although if someone offered to pay for them, I'd do it.). You could also see if there is a beauty school in your area. Not to get your hair cut, but maybe to get some ideas

I have highlights and I love them, but they are expensive and a fair amount of work to maintain. I've had mine for at least two or three years now. I don't like my natural hair color (mouse brown). What I like about the highlights is that they really enhance my natural color but not so much that the roots are noticeable. If I were to just dye my hair, it would have to be touched up every month. With the highlights, the root line isn't quite so visible and I can go two months between touch-ups (but after that, it does start to get a little ugly). When I am in getting a touch-up, I always schedule the next appt. If the color starts to get to light or brassy, I have my stylist put some low lights in.

But it is expensive and it takes a long time (a couple of hours). I read fashion magazines while the color is setting, so I view it as a little treat for myself (I never have time of fashion mags otherwise).

I also have really fine, stick straight. The highlights give it a little volume, which I desperately need (but any color would do this, not just highlights).

You can always get a consultation and then go somewhere else to have it done...

You can do highlights yourself with a drugstore kit. Its cheap and relatively easy. I have never paid anyone to color my hair. I just wish there weren't so many color options so I could make up my mind in less than an hour of looking at boxes, LOL

I love getting highlights, but my natural color is too light (ash brown) and my dyed (red) color is too dark to make getting them worth while. The key about highlights is what you are willing to pay and what you want to do. Highlights are expensive and high maintence, especially if you get multiple colors. As for being in style...right now, the whole very dark lowlight with the really light highlight is the style, but I don't know how long that will last. You can get really great highlights in multiple colors that can give your hair a change that will never go out of style.

If you don't mind my asking what color is your hair? Depending on that you can pick a great range of colors to get down.

To summarize, natural highlights aren't out of style, and I really don't think they ever will, and depending on your hair highlights would be a great way to modernize/change your hair.

(sorry about the long post...if it weren't for my almost degree in chemistry I think I'd learn to do other peoples hair.)

I still haven't decided on the highlights except not to do them myself. I've budgeted to do it, but I'll talk to the stylist. I want them. I don't want the maintence of them. LOL. As far as hairstyles, I actually thought this girl at this party had cute tastes and got her email and I KID YOU NOT, I emailed her with the attachment of photos and warned her I'd be asking her opinion. We'll see if she answers. If nothing else, I have a paper for the stylist to refer to in the morning.

I love highlights and definitely think they are in style! I'd have them myself except my hair is already colored too light so when I put them in they didn't show. I do use Feria, which automatically puts in some multi-color highlights. My stylist said she could put darker ones in but I am chicken to try THAT myself and don't want to spend the $$$ for them especially since my hair grows so fast. But I am off track LOL... YES they are in style.
