What do YOU do for a living?

I thought this would be a fun thread to see what everyone does for a living :)

I am a chemical dependency counselor. I absolutely love my job. I'm pretty new in my career. While I have worked in the field on and off for 15 years, I have only been counseling for 1 year.

So what do YOU do for a living, and do you like it?

MonteCristo 06-23-2016 09:28 AM

I'm trained as an accountant, and did that for 8 years. Right now I'm working as a maintenance planner, which is actually a lot more enjoyable. It was getting lonely and boring as an accountant. Now I have endless variety, and a lot more interaction with other people. Plus, I get to exercise my favorite skill...organization. :)

Swinella 06-24-2016 10:48 PM

Contracts management. Terms and conditions and loopholes...oh my.

TheLunchLady 06-26-2016 07:09 AM

Great thread, I love seeing what other people do, too. Some people have such interesting jobs!

Jesika - what inspired you to become a counselor? I could image that would be quite a stressful job, but definitely a rewarding one to help those overcome their addictions.

I am an English teacher (I live abroad so it's a foreign language here). Love my job, just wish the wages were a bit higher! I've been teaching for 6 years, but it's not something I can sustain a lifetime on, so I'm not sure what my next move would be. I would love to open an American style cafe that sells typical desserts, etc, or have an expat consulting agency, but there would be a lot of competition here!

RunningWild 06-26-2016 10:20 AM

I am currently going to school and actually seriously considering becoming a chemical dependency counselor too!

I am curious about what inspired you to become a counselor too, if you are open to talking about it. :) For me it is that I know a lot of addicts personally and have been involved in such circles myself (although I never used serious drugs), so I feel I have some valuable insights into what that life is like. I think that would help me more easily connect with those who come from very poor backgrounds and/or are homeless as I grew up under similar circumstances and have had a lot of the same experiences they have. I would love to do volunteer work with addicts at a homeless shelter or center for disadvantaged youth.

At the same time I would also really like to work at an animal shelter. Luckily I don't have to make a decision yet! :dizzy:

Cool :) What exactly is a maintenance planner? ;)

Hello :)

Well, kind of a long story, but I'll give you the short version: In my teens and early 20's I struggled with a variety of addictions, including substance abuse, although having an eating disorder was always my primary addiction (Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive eating over the years.) I have a lot of experience with various 12 step programs, and as I got better from my own addictions I decided that I wanted to major in Psychology. I got my degree, and was planning on going on for my Master's degree and going into private practice as a therapist, but changed my mind and decided to go into chemical dependency counseling.

It is a stressful job, I see a lot of heartache, and I've seen several people die from their addiction. BUT, those that make it... those that thrive... and helping to give families back their loved ones... makes the job worth it :)

Very cool about being an English teacher. I actually, at one point, taught kindergarten and was going to go into the school system as a teacher. But, decided against that too (LOL). The café idea sounds awesome. Yea, my passion is writing. I would love to be an author. But alas, time and money just aren't conducive.

Oh wow, really cool !!! I posted a reply (above) about what inspired me to become a counselor. Definitely having been there, and having that insight is of great value! I used to work at a local animal hospital, yea... wasn't for me... I LOVE animals, and I would have loved to work at an animal shelter at one point in my life, but the whole euthanizing animals because of space issues just breaks my heart.

Basically just organizing the department. We get work requests from management throughout the plant and then we have to make sure we have the right technicians and tools ready for the job, plus schedule downtime on the machines. I also do a lot of reports, manage the purchasing and inventory of maint parts and oversee the recycling department. Its a new position at my company so I'm sort of making it up as I go. :) It's a big facility (1500 associates) with a lot of old machinery so we keep hopping.

I am a web developer and designer. I have been in this line of work for a long time now. I enjoy the challenges so this is the perfect career for someone who likes to go crazy every now and again.

I bet that's awesome. I always wanted to learn how to do that!

Rosinante 06-27-2016 01:02 PM

Retired Vicar (priest).

mimsyborogoves 06-27-2016 01:38 PM

I'm a librarian! Right now I do general services but focus mostly on youth. I hope to be a children's/youth services librarian soon and then eventually go on to be the manager or director of a children's department in a major library system.

Super cool Rosinante! I had to look up what a Vicar was and think it wonderful to see. Were you one of the first 32 women ordained as Church of England priests?

FattoFitIndian 02-23-2017 11:23 AM

I am a banker... :)

FABULOUSSAGITARRIUS 02-24-2017 09:51 AM

I am a customer service rep for a 3rd party insurance administrator. Yes, yes I know it sounds super glamorous, lol. But I have my days when I do and do not like my job, but I have been doing the same thing for over 15 years. I went to school to be a chef and realized you cannot eat everything you make so here I am.
I do have my brokers license which is a requirement for my position due to ACA and it was one of the hardest test I have ever taken to get my state license. But compared to other companies that do the same thing that we do in our dept, I make a really good living, so no complaints here.

fitmom 02-25-2017 08:41 AM

Mother of two teenagers.

Full time job with no paid vacations, holidays or a lunch hour.

But I love it.

knoxie 02-26-2017 11:23 AM

On a career break just now. I'm usually an operations manager for a non-profit but I'm not cut out for it as I don't enjoy managing people and am also not very good at that side of it. I took the break to focus on myself and my family for a little bit (hello weight loss journey!) and also potentially to re-train into something I'm more suited to. Now if I only knew what that was..... ;)

Nightowlrn 02-26-2017 12:03 PM

I am currently a nurse and attorney.

takingcontrol 02-26-2017 01:05 PM

Some really interesting jobs here. I am with TheLunchLady and work abroad in Europe in the EFL teaching field. I love my job and the people I meet and learning their motivations for language learning. I also love being able to travel, but not sure how much more moving around I will do now, seem to have struck gold with this beautiful city!

curvynotlumpy 02-26-2017 01:51 PM

I'm an Assistant Director in an academic success center at a major public university. I have specific oversight for the campus transfer center. Mimsyborogoves, if I had to do it all over again, I'd be a librarian.

LovelyLeah 02-26-2017 03:38 PM

I'm currently on leave but I sell wedding dresses.

thinwhiteduchess 03-01-2017 11:05 PM

I am a theatre artist.

WebWoman 03-02-2017 01:01 PM

I'm a Database Administer and write/support Web Applications for the Government (!). It wasn't in my original plan, but it's VERY rewarding because I'm supporting our Veterans!

Princessroja 03-03-2017 10:32 PM

I do closed captioning and I teach ballet. Hoping to get more into the teaching since that's what my degree is in; captioning is fun but hard on the wrists and hands.

JesikaBeth 03-06-2017 11:14 AM

Cool jobs/careers! Nice to learn about what everyone does!

kira4003 03-17-2017 12:12 PM

web design!

I'm a web designer! I sit at home all day on my computer! :dizzy: although its awesome being your own boss, I do have to really watch what I eat, because my lifestyle is so sedentary.

emptysuitcase 03-18-2017 01:00 PM

I was a stay at home mom till 2012 when my husband was forced to quit his job. I was a janitress (?) for a semester, cleaning the local youth center and another one cleaning the local park. My husband has some land and in this area it's the country's production of cherries, peaches and appricots. He has turned since he gave up his job towards production, got rid of the old trees and planted new ones and we take care of them slowly nursing them untill full production capabilities reached. In June and July comes the real hard work for us since each cherry is hand picked. /cry. I really hate it, it's tiresome and I'm fair and end up burnt even in my hair roots . But money is good aandnd we can't live only on his disability pension, it'll get better and if I finally manage to lose much weight I'll maybe be able to maintain a regular physical job and who knows maybe land a decent one.

Adam S 03-27-2017 07:22 PM

I'm a student.

I'm a student in computer science , but what I would like to do for a living is helping people as I have a passion for nutrition , unfortunately life isn't always what you makes of it and you find yourself stuck in the road your parents choose for you.

But I will keep fighting.

Keika 03-28-2017 02:42 AM

I'm an assistant language teacher (ALT) on the JET Program in Japan. I assist teaching English in a junior high and two elementary schools. It's lots of fun, the kids are great, but teaching as a permanent career path probably isn't for me.

bloominbutterflies 03-28-2017 09:09 AM

I'm getting my masters in health administration. Currently I work in a call center for a large hospital system.

nickilaughs 04-04-2017 01:02 PM

Emergency trauma nurse. I love my job. I get a lot of walking in every day and if I ate better consistently and didint indulge when stressed, I probably wouldn't have to worry about weight. I'm an emotional eater, and I have a huge weakness for chips/bread.

DivineDivina 04-04-2017 01:31 PM

I work as a state and local tax associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers or PwC....yes the same ones who messed up the Oscars! Lol. I've only been here for about nine and a half months but it's pretty interesting so far. :)

Oops, deep apologies, Erin! I guess looking at the date you asked that question marks when my weightloss began to reverse itself, and I stopped dropping in. Sorry for the delay.

No, I wasn't one of the 32 but I was in the next year, which means mine was the first year that women and men went through together from their deacon's year to being a priest in a "normal" kind of a way.

MumofMany 04-10-2017 06:53 AM

I'm a phlebotomist and also a teacher/trainer of phlebotomy. :) Not a job most people would like, but I love it and I love passing on my knowledge to others too.
