Things to pamper herself are usually good at that age. Bath and Body works bubble baths, a warm sweater/hoodie/sweatshirt, new slippers, a snuggly soft blanket to pull out when in her chair. Does she like to read? Does she do any crafts? These might be other areas to look at as well. My mom is in her 80s and these are all things she enjoys as she doesn't want things that will add to her house (she's practical - what happens when she dies, there is more stuff to deal with that isn't necessary is her view). Does she have a restaurant that is diabetic friendly that she visits? Not sure if any of these help, but thought I'd chime in.

My grandmother is older and doesn't get out much. In the past I've gotten her a personalized tote bag and also a warm personalized blanket with all of her great grandchildren's names, an "old school" wooden radio, a basket of easy shelf-stable foods (she has diabetes, high blood pressure and doesn't cook), a beautiful picture frame with my daughter's pic, restaurant gift cards (she loves a few in particular).

I guess it also depends on the person. Does your MIL have hobbies? Did she say she dreamed of trying something but never did it?

My MIL is pretty active, taking into account that she is 70. We presented her with a self-guided picnic boat tour from virginexperiencedays on her anniversary. We spent that day together. She said it was the best birthday party. So, my advice is to choose something that will bring joy.
