Reading any good books?
I thought getting off the weight topic might be a good change.
Read any good books lately or in the past? Favorite authors? Genres that you like? A while back I read the first two of the Poldark series and they will be showing a new Poldark series on Masterpiece Theatre this month. I can't wait to see that! I also like humorous writers like David Sedaris. Funny travel memoirs are also a favorite like M. Troost. Dysfunctional family memoirs also like Mary Carr's The Liar's Club. I just picked up Girl on the Train from the library and starting that. I hear it's a page turner. Any readers out there? |
I am a reader. I have a Kindle and I love it. I usually read before I go to bed and therefor I usually go to bed too late :D
For the most part I read mystery/thriller books. |
I haven't read much lately, but I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Long Walk by Stephen King, it is one of his short stories, or novellas (can't remember which atm). When I read it's usually at night, and I've been too tired to do so lately.
|
I like historical or biographical nonfiction. As such, I just finished Dead Wake by Eric Larson and am currently reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Next on my list is the novel Orphan Train.

The Martian by Andy Weir (seriously I loved this book, about an astronaut left on Mars, Fiction)
Eleanor and Park (YA) Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (YA) The Fault in Our Stars (YA) The Demon Under the Microscope (non fiction about the first antibiotic) Let's Pretend this Never happened (hilarious memoir) Cuckoo's Calling (Noir) The Silkworm (Noir) The Traitor's Wife: The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold (Historical Fiction) The Husband's Secret (fiction) Currently reading: All The Light We cannot See I run a book club :D |
beerab, I also run a book club and I'm currently reading All the Light We Cannot See as well as The Shoemaker's Wife...both very good. :)
I really liked Girl on the Train, The Goldfinch (very long, but incredible character development), The Rosie Project (light hearted romance), Still Alice (depressing and we all started to think we have Alzheimers!). I really liked The Husband's Secret....seemed like I was reading a movie. Defending Jacob was also like reading a movie. The Forgotten Garden was also lovely as well as Orphan Train. Unbroken was inspiring but also heart breaking and it read like a newspaper article....a very, very long one anyway. ;) Thanks for this post. I'll be checking out a lot of these recommendations. |
The last great book I read was "The Testament" by John Grisham. This thread caught my eye because I just started a book yesterday, "Pearl Moon" by Katherine Stone. I read it years ago and it was great, so I just want to re-read it.
Thanks Crimzon for this topic. It is refreshing to talk about other things going on in our lives! |
AshliRose, have you ever read Presumed Innocent? It's a great read and there's a Harrison Ford movie that's pretty great too. I read it years ago but since you liked the John Grisham book, I thought I'd mention it.

I liked the Husband's Secret and it was funny cuz it got a lot of discussion going, namely, after learning the secret would you tell on your husband or not? Most people said they would not tell. We do monthly genres, for October we are going to choose a newer Steven King novel. :) |
Thanks for all the replies!!
I hadn't check back to the board since posting on a sleepless night. Things got a little busy. Really appreciate the suggestions and I love the wide variety. Eric Larson to Steven King, some YA, etc. That's great! I read The Goldfinch last year. I thought it was too long but good. An excellent read by Eric Larson is In the Garden of Beasts. Very memorable. I'd like to read King's new novel - the name is escaping me but I just read a favorable review. I'll definitely look into Let's Pretend this Never Happened since funny memoirs are one of my favorite genres. Thanks everyone. I hope continue to drop by so we can chat about books!! |
I do not typically enjoy contemporary literature so right now I'm reading volume 1 of "The Complete Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm enjoying it far more than I expected. I read a lot of old, classic literature. If I read a book that happens to have been written during this century, it is invariably set in a previous century!

I so wish I could be in a book club! Have looked for one locally but I live in a tiny town so not having much luck.
@Crimzon, I am just starting Stephen King's latest this evening. I hope it's a bit more like his older work. Definitely read, "Let's Pretend this Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson; it's pretty funny. She has a new book coming out in a few months as well. I read her blog too. @beerab, I loved the Husband's Secret. I read all Liane Moriarty's books and hope she's got another coming out soon. I just finished the newest Judy Blume yesterday and it was pretty enjoyable. Kept my interest although it had an awful lot of characters to keep track of. It's a novel for adults, not kids. Happy reading all! |
I'm reading Game of Thrones. I'm up to Book 2 and I LOVE IT! I'm generally not a fantasy lover (AT ALL), but I can't believe how awesome this book series is. :o Highly recommend!
|
Tai, is there any way you could start your own book club? You only need one more person to start and then you just keep telling people about it...you'd be surprised how quickly it can turn into a larger club. :) If not, then perhaps there are online book clubs? Just a thought.
Golda, I can't get myself to read Game of Thrones because I already watch the series (so am too lazy). ;) beerab, montly genres are a great idea. What has been the best part about this book club is not only do I read so much more than I used to, but it gets me to read book genres that I would never think to read on my own. Happy reading everyone! |
The China Study for health and Stephen King short stories for soul :)
|
I read a lot of fantasy books and sometimes romance. I read a lot of books by indie authors these days. At the moment I'm finishing off the Memory's Wake trilogy.

I read the China Study after someone in my family went vegan and really enjoyed it. I thought maybe it would be too dry and over my head but it was very informative. |
Just loving this thread; hope we can keep it going fellow readers!

I'm still forcing myself through fifty shades of grey..
Otherwise I've recently read and LOVED Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and am reading the sequel in between fifty shades of grey, world without end :) |
luckymommy:
No, I never read "Presumed Innocent", but I did see the movie and really liked it. Not sure why I have a tough time wanting to read a book if I've already seen the movie first? One of my favorite movies is "Pride and Prejudice". My husband bought me the book years ago and I still have not read it. Maybe I will try it once I finish "Pearl Moon". I know the books are always way better than the movies! |
AshliRose, I can totally relate to not wanting to read a book when I've already seen the movie. I watch Game of Thrones and don't feel like reading the books, which are so highly regarded. I did read that particular book after seeing the movie and I still enjoyed it, but I think you should skip it. I do recommend the author's (Scott Turow) other book called One L...it's about a first year Harvard Law student. I read it so many years ago (when my husband was in law school) so maybe that's why I found it to be interesting but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Love to read
I love to read and find when I can get in that routine it keeps me from night eating. It seems that my downfall is TV and snacking, so reading helps me get away from that. I am getting ready to start 'A Walk in the Woods' by Bill Bryson.
|
I'm re-reading the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. First time I read them was pre-smart phone; this time I can conveniently Google the (many) references I don't get.
Somehow I missed Millon de Floss the first time through and cracked up when I saw the name last night. |
I'm currently reading-
-The Hypnotist's Love Story, Liane Moriarty (just started) -The Favored Child, Philippa, Gregory(Wide Acre Series book 2) I highly recommend if you like period pieces and aren't easily disturbed! The first in the series is Wideacre I've read many of the books you guys are reading now! I love reading! I'll skim the list and see if there's any I can pick up. Thank goodness for the library or I'd be So poor! :) |

I also read a lot of "old stuff." My favorite book of all time's The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Also a big fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jules Verne, Upton Sinclair, H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury…too many to list, really. Some of my more modern favorites: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, His Dark Materials (Golden Compass) series by Philip Pullman, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, the Abarat series by Clive Barker. I also like anthologies like The Best American Short Stories, The Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy, etc. Great stuff in those. I've been on a YA kick lately (and read a good bit of it in general). Ones I've particularly liked recently: The Fringe series by Tarah Benner, the Covencraft series by Margarita Gakis, and Broken Symmetry by Dan Rix (I think it's free on Amazon right now). |
Reading The Reach by Nate Kenyon right now. It's a psychological thriller, with possibly some supernatural elements. Picked it up at a used book store a few months ago, and just getting to it now.
|
re-listening to Dreamcatcher by Stephen King
|
I am reading Brian Lumley's Necroscope series at the moment, it is horror/fantasy genre. I have read the series about five times before but this is the first time on kindle.

Hey folks-
I just finished Girl on the Train - that was a good read! It's a toss up what is next on my list so I'll get back. I'll probably start two. Sspell - I really loved A Walk in the Woods - I hope you find it as funny as I did. I'm a Game of Thrones fan too (well, until this past weekend - no spoilers). I have not read the books though. Sometimes I do read books after the movie. Damage was one of them. Great movie and book - a bit dark. It doesn't really spoil it for me. I loved the movie version of Steinbeck's East of Eden but thought the book was much better. The later version with Jane Seymour was closer to the book but I always love James Dean. I also loved Poisonwood Bible Jonquil One for my "most memorable" list. I couldn't put that one down. See you guys later! |
I just finished Stephen King's "Finders Keepers." I enjoyed the first half more than the second. I didn't realize it was the second in a trilogy after last years "Mr. Mercedes" and that there is a third one to follow.
|
King is always fun to read. I've read Misery, Pet Cemetery, Thinner and maybe some more that I can't remember.
Which one of King's is your favorite Tai? |
I'm with Tai! When I was laid up for nearly 10 weeks, I read a lot of King!! I worked my way through the Dark Tower series. This summer I'm starting with an oldie, The Stand. I've read a great deal of his work, he's always a sure read in my book.
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand was an amazing read. Haven't seen the movie, but the book had me sooo wrapped up I would read til like 4 AM!!! Good stuff! |

I'm currently reading All the Light We Cannot See and it's really good so far, beautiful writing.
|
Tai - I never heard of 11/27/63 - I'll have to check that out.
Never read The Strand either Mrs.Trying - maybe I'll look into that one too. I'm reading non-fiction at the moment Brain on Fire. It's fascinating. I may pick up a King book since we've been talking/writing about him and summer calls for a page turner. A mix of fiction and non is always good. I was away a bit but happy this thread continues. Happy reading!! |

Is Brain on fire the book about the girl with bipolar disorder? If it's the one I'm thinking of; it's really good. I hope you're enjoying it! I'm getting ready to start a book by Lisa Genova called "Inside the O'Brians." The same author who wrote Still Alice. |
Hey there Tai,
I put down Brain on Fire for now. It's not about bipolar - it another problem. It was kind of depressing me. How is Inside the O'Brians? I didn't read Still Alice either. That is the one they just made a movie about, I think. Aside from book chat - I just looked at your stats - you've done so well Tai - congratulations! |
So I picked up The Circle by Dave Eggers who wrote A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius which I really loved. It's a memoir. Totally recommend it. I read it years ago and never read any of his others and decided to give this one a go. Good so far!
