Teal can be either cool or warm. Decide which one this particular teal is first and then go to the paint store and get swatches of complimentary cool/warm colors.
I'm bold in my colors, but if it was warm, I'd go with a warm cranberry color. If it was cool, I'd go with a cool light green with the same hues ... If you do too much cool colors together they get "cotton candy" looking if you know what I mean ....
Now black would be interesting! Ya know, a rich gray with a warm teal would work!
Brown!!!! Teal and brown are one of my favourite colour combinations! Brown is still dark for the boys but you can go light enough to suit your tastes too! Good luck!
I just bought a new blouse, love the colors ! It has a white background and the print colors are teal and purple. It is a beautiful combination. I tried different colored tanks tops to go with it either teal or purple look great, the white keeps the purple from being too overpowering.

My first thought was a lovely rich stormy grey as well! I chose Teal fabric for my wedding dress (not traditional by any stretch) and paired it with grey suede pumps. Loved it!
I like the charcoal grey idea too, but only if there's a lot of white and natural light to offset it. Another good way to test colors is go to Sherwin Williams.com. They have a great program where you can choose rooms and put different colors on different surfaces (including bathroom towels).
If you want something neutral, a beige or grey as others have mentioned would certainly be acceptable. If the grey is too light or blue, I'd be afraid it wouldn't create enough contrast with the teal.
I am quite adventurous though so I'd likely choose a complimentary color such as orange or yellow but less saturated creating a softer color. Personally, I'd stay away from analogous colors as it would be overwhelming in a small space such as a bathroom.
Actually I think your son has a pretty good point with the black idea! Of course it depends on what the bathroom looks like, but I've seen a couple of dark rooms and they looked really fancy. Maybe I would go for a very dark grey rather than proper black, but still!
Benjamin Moore's Alexandria Beige in eggshell finish. My absolute FAVORITE paint color, and it looks awesome with teal. I have it on a few of my walls. Go find a swatch and check it out.
Regardless of what color you pick make sure they know this is for a bathroom before they mix it.
