I read that breakfast matters because of how it affects ghrelin production. It doesn't speed up your metabolism or "kick-start" it or anything, but it does appear to affect how hungry you'll feel. Since I've started eating breakfast, I can attest to that. It's made a difference in my hunger throughout the day. What the mechanism is, I don't know--and it might even be a placebo effect--but it's been working for me.
That doesn't mean everyone needs to eat it, but according to the "can't hurt, might help" philosophy, I would recommend folks who are having trouble with hunger throughout the day give it a try. I was a confirmed non-breakfast-eater who often didn't eat anything until five or six in the evening; now I don't know how I managed that.
Bodies aren't nearly as similar as we'd like to think they are. Some people undoubtedly do great without breakfast and I'd be the last one to say it's mandatory. But for anyone who struggles with hunger, it's a quick, easy change to make just to see if it'll make a difference.
