CHildren learn in many ways. At our library we try to support that very young children learn by playing and by interaction with adults. Our storytimes for Babies start with free play, then we sing songs and do nursery rhymes, have a story and then the baby explores board books with the adult. We do not teach in any way except to model the idea that books, songs, rhymes, words, etc are fun. We have done this for about 6 years and I have had parents of five and six year olds come up and tell me that coming to this storytime really made a postive difference in how their child learned to read. I have nothing against flashcards - but I hope people do try their local library too.
