Default The Zen of Snow

What I learned from growing up in Upstate New York winters, and am re-learning, as I readjust, now that I live in an area that isn't used to snow & isn't physically and mentally prepared for it.

The zen of snow is:

- Accept the snow.
- Respect the snow.
- Adjust to the snow, but do not let it limit your life.
- Use the snow as an opportunity to get to know and help your neighbors.
- Don’t forget to step back occasionally and acknowledge its beauty.

It's the only way to get through winter without getting caught up in frustration, agoraphobia & depression.

What is the Zen of Wind? It's not the snow that's the pits here....it's the winds that sculpt that "beautiful" snow into 10-15' snow drifts that are hard as a rock.

The Zen of Wind is .... earmuffs.

(HadEnough is so NOT a Zen-friendly name. ;-) Hang in there, bud.)

I LOVE the snow! Love, love, love it! And it's great for working out! I walked up and down my backyard hill just 10 times and my legs really felt it afterward yesterday. 12 inches of snow is tough to trudge through! My son and I walked to store in it and delighted as it fell on our tongues. It's so beautiful and the way the wind blew it, one side of ALL the trees is completely white from roots to branches. I've never seen anything like it.

My parents grew up in upstate NY and tell stories, but this 12 inches of snow is the closest I've ever come. Bring it on! Snow makes me happy.

I'm not sure what I want to say on this thread... I live in Canada, snow is pretty much the norm.

I live in North Dakota, we have snow (most years) for about 6 months out of the year. Sometimes longer ! It's great until we get sub zero temps for days, sometimes weeks, on end.

I am so over the snow. It was fun for a few times (I saw snow once between the ages of 0 and 22). But 4 times so far this year...um, this is TEXAS!!!! I did not sign up for this, LOL! DH and I are thinking the South Texas heat is sounding better and better compared to the North Texas winters.

Now that we are starting to melt, I don't know which is worse, the snowy mayham or the muddy aftermath! I have to admit though, the woods of our back pasture looked gorgeous yesterday morning. Absolutely breathtaking. Saw it, got the pictures, now am ready for it to GO AWAY!

Yeah, but Canfield.....you don't have to shovel, plow or move cold. LOL!

Sincerely,

Your neighbor in South Dakota!

I'm with yah sista!! I absolutely love snow & being outside skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, walking the dog, shoveling & then coming in by the fire and having hot chocolate

wow, the snow on the trees is gorgeous. I didn't grow up with it (a no cal girl here). and taking the subway above ground, seeing the city covered in white is pretty spectacular, along with the wintery sunsets (vibrant pinks and purples). I could do without slipping on the ice and the stiff breezes, really stiff breezes, brrrrr. but there is quite a bit of beauty in the snow! (and watching the dogs play in it too)

I live in the bitter-cold upper midwest. I've tried to embrace it by ice skating, skiing, hiking, but I will never love it. I've lived in the same snowy state my entire life, and I am still in awe of the beauty on a bright day after a snow fall. Or hoar frost. Or sundogs.
