Careers

I'm a bit bored this evening, and I was wondering what you all do. Either what your career is now, or what you're currently studying, or what you did study! I always love hearing about this from other people for some reason. I think it gives me motivation to keep going on a career or consider others cause I'm always changing my mind haha.

As for me, I'm a geology major! I'd like to become a mineralogist at the moment... but that could change when I learn more about the other branches of geology.

Anyway, please share if you'd like! And I hope this is the right forum for this kind of discussion haha.

Right now I am an assistant for the owner of an inflatables rental company. In a few months I'll be a phlebotomy student.

zenor77 02-08-2009 11:22 PM

I'm the "house mother" for a company that designs, manufactures, and installs interior and exterior signage. My actual title is receptionist, but the job is really an office manager type job, which is my back ground. I really am a "house mother" of sorts, it's funny what doesn't happen when I'm not there.

I'm planning on going back to school soon. I'd like a degree in general religious studies, but I'm not sure what kind of job that would translate into. I don't want to become part of the clergy. I have thought about possibly going all the way to a Phd and doing research, but that's a long way off.

I'm a biologist - my bachelors and masters are in bioinformatics, but now I'm getting my PhD in biochemistry/molecular/cell biology.

nelie 02-09-2009 02:55 PM

Mayness - Do you work in bioinformatics? I've always been interested in the mix of biology/computer science and when I was in school I studied artificial intelligence with is/was the computer science approach of using biological information to influence computer science. I was actually thinking of taking a couple bioinformatics courses because it sounds interesting. I also like manipulating large amounts of data and making sense of it which seems to be a large part of bioinformatics.

DCHound 02-09-2009 02:59 PM

I'm a writer. I have several (mostly) useless undergraduate and graduate degrees in various things...

murphmitch 02-09-2009 03:37 PM

I don't so much anymore - I'm more focused on the actual lab bench work now. I would definitely recommend taking classes if it sounds interesting to you, it's still a fairly hot field and there's always a lot of interesting new stuff coming out.

I actually took an AI class though the CS department when I was doing my masters, that's a great background to have in bioinformatics, since there's always a need for programs that can "learn" to recognize patterns more effectively. (Although I learned more about robots than I ever needed to know, lol.)

lizziep 02-11-2009 01:55 AM

i work in a call center- in collections. it's kind of a bummer job but at least i sometimes get to help people that really need help and that occasionally makes me feel less horrible about what i do.

if i had my choice i'd either teach english or work in a drug or sexual assault counseling program. maybe some day i'll be able to afford to go to school so i can have a career - in the meantime it's just a job for me.

LandonsBaby 02-12-2009 09:03 PM

I have a B.S in Family & Child Studies. I am a housewife and hopefully future stay at home mom. If I ever go back to school (which I do not foresee in the next 25 years), I will go for a Masters in Nurse Midwifery with the goal of attending home births.
