Hey, I live in quebec, Canada
I am in my first year of BACC in Elementary school teaching and its quite interesting because during my schooling we were taught little about Native Americans. They are now teaching us to integrate it. We had two classes Natives in my Multicultural class and one or two classes about it in my Philosophy of education class. It was very interesting. We saw this heart breaking movie about how they tried to assimilate the Natives in Quebec by forcing children to go to boarding school, leaving their parent, and getting majorly abused(some lead to death) by priests. I think it's very important students learn about this topic because it is very relevent to where we live and the history of our land.

I meant, but I see I didn't actually say, that in both locations we were very close to or immersed in a large or decently sized Native American population.

Gosh, this seems crazy to me!

In Western NY state, we learned about that sort of stuff starting in 4th grade. And, yes, that included stories about them being forced to leave their homes and move onto reservations. The unit mostly focused on the local Indian tribes and their cultures (I know more about the Iroquois than I'll ever need!) but we at least discussed other well-known tribes.

I think 7th grade was the next time we had a really in-depth look at it, and they were able to be a little more honest then since we were more mature, and talk about some of the violence and cruelty that really occurred.

And this wasn't that long ago... I was in 4th grade in 1994, I think.

It was just recently that I heard all about this. It's quite sad.
