Whatcha Reading Oct '08?

Love these threads! Makes my lists longer and longer, but love them all the same!

I'm in the middle of Twilight by Stephenie Meyers. Am really really enjoying it so far.

Tell me what you are all reading! :)

Pam9397 10-01-2008 08:47 AM

Right now I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett but I already have my next two books picked out. Easy readers, lol. They are The House by Danielle Steel and Angels Fall by Nora Roberts. I always need a couple "light" books after I read something more serious.

Love these book threads too. :)

megsa 10-01-2008 09:26 AM

I'm nearly finished one called 'A Life in Pieces' by Richard Baer. It's about a woman with multiple personality disorder. Quite harrowing, but at the same time un-putdownable!

Glory87 10-01-2008 10:34 AM

I just finished:

Hunger Games - This was a little too young adult/Twilighty for me. It had a very interesting premise (A little like Long Walk by Richard Bachman) but it really didn't deliver for me. A very quick read.

Waiter Rant - I put myself through college waiting tables so this book was almost hard to read. I'm so glad my rent no longer depends on the kindness of strangers.

I am currently reading:

More Than it Hurts You

LisaMarie71 10-01-2008 10:56 AM

Glory -- More Than It Hurts You sounds really good. I read Chang and Eng by the same author a few years ago and really liked it. Have you read that?

I'm still reading The Pillars of the Earth and probably will be for a while.

Shopaholic1204 10-01-2008 10:57 AM

I'm still reading, The Vampire Seduction.

ollie27 10-01-2008 11:02 AM

unfortunately all of mine are school related, but i do manage to sneak in poetry for pleasure. right now i'm reading King Lear, Survival at Auschwitz, and Absalom, Absalom!.

reading Marge Piercy's The Moon is Always Female at bedtime to sneak in something of my own choosing.

glory - i waited tables for years! this book looks awesome-adding it to me list. thanks!

queenofthehouse 10-01-2008 11:14 AM

I'm almost done with New Moon and will start Eclipse after I finish (probably tonight).

alinnell 10-01-2008 11:54 AM

Gosh I loved Waiter Rant. Did you hear they're planning on making it into a TV series?

I'm reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer right now, and after that I'll jump into the Jen Lancaster books.

LandonsBaby 10-01-2008 02:49 PM

This month I'll be reading:

Prayerfully Yours: Creating the Bond Between Man and His Maker by Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, M.D.

Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness by Suzanne Somers

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook That Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats by Sally Fallon

Glory87 10-01-2008 03:20 PM

So much to comment on!

LisaMarie71
No, I haven't read Chang & Eng yet. I just read about it on amazon and it sounds awesome (I loved "The Girls" too). I'm going to see if I can get it from the library. I am liking "More than it hurts you" although I'm having a little trouble understanding the mother's motivations.

Ollie27/Alinnell
It strikes pretty true to home in my experience (although I never worked fine dining) He has a great little part about the "verbal tipping" customers that hit really close to home. You know, the customers that TELL you how great you did and then leave a crap tip? His characterization of people likely to wait tables was dead on, as well. The book definitely brought back a lot of memories, not all of them good!

Alinnell
I thought The Host had an amazing premise, but I literally hated the "heroine" and thought the book was weak overall. Let me know your thoughts when you finish it! I loved loved loved the first and third Jen Lancaster books and thought the second was okay.

owlmonkey 10-01-2008 03:35 PM

I'm reading two right now: French Women Don't Get Fat (for new ideas) and Aunt Erma's Cope Book (because we all need to keep our humor.)

oneupsteph 10-01-2008 03:47 PM

I'm reading The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout.

It's kind of biased, but I really like psychology books. :)

ducky0224 10-01-2008 03:57 PM

Mine is school related too, Becoming the Master Student.

i am rereading Hitchickers guide to the Galaxy. I read it about 9 years ago and loved it. Felt it was time to reread it. (:

Wifey 10-02-2008 09:15 AM

Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner.

I love that book!!

Glory87 10-02-2008 03:40 PM

I finished More Than It Hurts You and it was okay. It was definitely hard to understand the mother's motivation, but I guess any mom that hurts her own kid is insane and by default, should be hard to understand.

Can I mention a movie based on a book? I finally got around to seeing Notes on a Scandal last night - I had read the book when it was first published and really liked it. I thought the movie was fabulous - very well cast. I thought Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench were amazing - the characters are at heart very unlikeable, but I still felt a lot of sympathy for both of them.

Next up, probably The Condition since it's my next book due back to the library. I really liked Jennifer Haigh's Mrs. Kimble so hopefully this one will be a winner too.

I have a looooming stack of library books - which is both good and bad!

nelie 10-02-2008 03:44 PM

Right now, I'm reading a quick book 'Slow Fat Triathlete'. Its a fun book :)

LisaMarie71 10-02-2008 06:44 PM

Glory, I LOVED Notes on a Scandal -- I read the book when it first came out and I thought the movie was great. Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were wonderful in those roles, especially Dench. Oh, and I liked Mrs. Kimble too.

In addition to The Pillars of the Earth, I've also started reading Jennifer Weiner's The Guy Not Taken, which is a collection of short stories. I'm actually reading them to the baby! He doesn't know the difference -- he just knows I'm talking to him!

FrouFrou 10-04-2008 01:55 PM

Just finished The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve and started Full House by Janet Evanovich...need something light and fun.

butterflyangels 10-04-2008 02:08 PM

I'm in the middle of Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett (the audiobook version), and the next hard copy I'm reading is Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire and probably either Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe or The Spies That Never Were by Hervie Haufler, and if I have time before the month ends, Catholicism for Dummies.

Smiling_Sara 10-05-2008 03:30 PM

I'm debating between my next book. It's either gonna be Eat, Pray, Love, or Bright Lights, Big ***

i am still trying 10-05-2008 04:03 PM

I am in the borntofly- iddle of Twilight right now too and really like it. I just finidhed Eat, Pray, Love and thought it was just OK but I know lots of people really liked it.

jahjah1223 10-05-2008 06:19 PM

Needful things Stephen King.

Smiling_Sara 10-05-2008 07:29 PM

Decided on Big Love by Sara Dunn. Been sitting on my shelf for some time.

Glory87 10-05-2008 08:45 PM

I just finished American Wife and I thought it was...interesting. It is loosely based on the life of Laura Bush - but I found it a little uncomfortable. It was too closely based to be loosely based, if that makes any sense. I felt a little bad for Laura Bush - she was responsible for a terrible car crash in high school that took the life of a schoolmate and the author just...spun that true tragedy into a really uncomfortable area.

I guess, I think that a lot of people will think the whole book is based on truth because there are a few nuggets of truth scattered about - and that seems WRONG.

The writing was good - the character based on George Bush was very well done. Ending kind of limped along, but overall I liked it.

Not sure what's next.

Shopaholic1204 10-05-2008 09:45 PM

I just started reading...The Shunning by Beverly Lewis

DianaG 10-05-2008 10:06 PM

I love these threads. Everyone's entries give me many more books to add to my "to read" list.

Ollie: I absolutely love Shakespeare's plays. King Lear and Hamlet are my two favorites out of his tragedies. The discussions between King Lear and the fool :joker: really make a person think. Cordelia was even a name on our list when we named the girls, lol.

GatorgalstuckinGa: I love that book! Douglas Adams' books always make me laugh out loud.

I am on the last chapter of Haruki Murakami's After Dark.:book2: So far I am loving it. He has an intense way of looking at personal identity I find thought provoking.

I just started Friday a book I've been meaning to read for awhile. The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison. The novel is supposed to be a classic of the fantasy genre and I love fantasy :wizard: so I figured I would give it a spin.

If I manage to finish it this month then I plan to change genres to something more modern and read William Gibson's Pattern Recognition.

Quiet Ballerina 10-05-2008 10:21 PM

Meg Cabot is my current author of choice...lol

Just read: Every Boy's Got One
Currently reading: Size 12 is Not Fat
Next: Size 14 is Not Fat Either
After that: Queen of Babble in the Big City

LisaMarie71 10-06-2008 09:31 AM

Glory - that book does seem a bit ... uncomfortable to me. I was wondering how it would be. I believe the author is Curtis Sittenfeld, right? I enjoyed her book Prep, which was popular a few years ago.

Diana - Haruki Murakami is definitely one of my favorite authors. I love love love him! Whenever I'm in a reading slump and can't find anything to really interest me, I turn to Murakami and he always brings me out of it. I haven't read After Dark yet, but I have it and will read it soon. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle was amazing -- if you haven't read that one, you must. Actually, all his stuff is wonderful.

I'm still reading The Pillars of the Earth -- a little less than a third of the way through.

DianaG 10-06-2008 01:15 PM

LisaMarie71- I do like The Wind up Bird Chronicles. He is one of my favorite author's. I did my Master's thesis on his mysteries-Dance, Dance, Dance, A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.:)

cbmare 10-06-2008 01:31 PM

Just started Standing in the Rainbow by Fannie Flagg. I love her other ones and am enjoying this one.

Not sure what's next.

NavyWifeDee 10-06-2008 11:21 PM

I did it.

So.. after reading so much about them.. I broke down and got the Twilight series. I finished all 4 of them in 2 days. They were great. Thanks for the recommendation from all who talked about them. Now I'm going to be back off to sci/fi fantasy or christian romances for a few days, depending on what the tiny library has in.

Shopaholic1204 10-07-2008 10:46 AM

yay for reading twilight!! now you gotta watch the movie when it comes out!!

alinnell 10-07-2008 11:51 AM

I'm having a hard time getting into the Host. I'm just at the part where she's driving to Tucson...last night out of boredom (DH was watching football) I wanted to read but couldn't get myself to read that. Instead I read the first chapter in Jen Lancaster's first book. Hilarious!

Shopaholic1204 10-07-2008 11:56 AM

The Host is a little slow at first..but it does get really interesting once you get to the good stuff.

Thanks. I'll keep going, but perhaps not at night when I'm sleepy. I'll save it for the weekends.

Glory87 10-07-2008 12:53 PM

I adored the premise for the Host - what a great idea for an alien race, but man, the execution was terrible. I HATED HATED HATED the "heroine" and her boyfriend. The deliberate lack of sex was also pretty odd (to me). I finally finished the book and really hated the total "Mary Sue" ending: (I wrote the following spoiler text in white font. If you don't mind reading a spoiler, highlight the portion between the stars to read).

***
The alien gets put in the PRETTIEST BESTEST girl ever! Everyone just loves her because she's so gosh darned pretty! Total author wish fulfillment - blech.
***
I really wish The Host had been written by someone else because there were parts of it I thought were awesome (none of the main characters, obviously). I just have to avoid Stephenie Meyer in the future. I couldn't make it through Twilight and I hated The Host - mainly because of her angsty, weak, crybaby, so in loooooooove "heroines."

I'll admit, I'll probably see Twilight (the movie) at some point, but I doubt I'll pay full price for it in a theatre!

I loved Jen Lancaster's latest - she is a hoot!

alinnell 10-07-2008 01:24 PM

Glory~I understand the no sex thing because Stephenie is Mormon (graduated from BYU) and the characters aren't married.
