Whatcha Readin' Sept 2008
I was trying to find the last book thread and couldn't find it (I'm sure some helpful person will say it was RIGHT THERE on the first page! heh :)). Tomorrow is Sept 1, so I figured I would just start a new thread for September.
I just read 2 books: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle - this book was such a tease. It was beautifully written, the author had a gift for a nice turn of phrase. It started slowly, but I stuck with it because there were so many mysteries, I thought it was going to go someplace awesome. It had the WORST ENDING of any book I have read since Hannibal. Just terrible and pointless and "why bother." Ugh. Accidentally on Purpose - a non fiction account of a 40 year old single mother and her relationship with her elderly parents and the younger father of her child. I really liked it. Next up: The House at Riverton - I started this one yesterday and it has potential. I love the whole lord/lady of the manor/servant vibe (like from the movie Gosford Park). What are you guys reading? I always get so many good ideas from this thread! |
I am STILL reading Imajica, but the next book on the list is PS I love you, Just to see what all of the fuss was about.
|
I'm reading Predator by Patricia Cornwell, I think I'm about half way through... it's a murder mystery, but also kind of like CSI
|
I just finished reading "The Choice" by Nicholas Sparks as well as "Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw" by Will Ferguson. I love Nicholas Sparks books mainly because they are kind of predictable.....and are an easy read. Plus, they're sappy romantic stories most of the time, and I'm all about those ;)
Next up, I have "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Piccoult to read as well as "Notes on a Scandal". I saw the movie on demand earlier this summer and just want to see if the book's better/different/etc. My sister gave it to me because she finished it. |
I loved Notes on a Scandal :)
|
Yay! I love "what are you reading" threads! I'm such a book-a-holic!
I have a stack of mystery/suspense type books to read from a friend. Probably about 20 books! Luckily it only takes me about 3 days to get through one of these ;). I just finished Head to Head by Linda Ladd. Creepy. I'm getting ready to start Alone by Lisa Gardner. |
Right now I am reading Eclipse the third book in the twilight series..... its light after reading sociological theory all summer.....
then I think Labyrinth by Kate Mosse and then I will be back to reading only sociology s |

Tonight I finish Riders by Jilly Cooper
Tomorrow I think I'll start On Thin Ice by Susan Andersen |
I also loved Notes on a Scandal -- book and movie. I just finished Breaking Dawn and am nearly done with Such a Pretty Fat. It's ok, but she's no David Sedaris -- not even close! Next up is either Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth or This Charming Man by Marian Keyes.
|
I've been listening to David Sedaris' latest on audiobook......his writing, at least imo, doesn't translate well to audio. Maybe it is his voice...not sure.
LisaMarie - who wrote Such a Pretty Fat? Quick synopsis? |
It's Jen Lancaster who also wrote Bitter is the New Black. She is HILARIOUS. She has a great blog too: jennsylvania.com
I get nearly all of my books from the library (just can't afford my reading habit) but I plan to buy this one - one of the very few books deemed "good enough" for purchase! How weird, I absolutely LOVE LOVE David Sedaris reading his own stuff, I think the very sound of his voice is hilarious. God, I hated Garden Spells! I was so mad because I bought it electronically for my eReader and couldn't return it! I won't spoil anything since you're still reading it, but I will say the constant "this person did that because they are a member of X family and X family ALWAYS acts like that" got on my nerves so bad. |

I'm reading Twilight right now and when I'm done I'll read the rest of the Twilight Series. It's so hard to put this book down!;)
|
Well, I blew through all 8 of the Sookie Stackhouse novels this summer, and I wanted more vampires so I decided to break down and get the Twilight books. Glad I did, so far I am loving it. I am about half way through book 3, Eclipse. I have heard about all the people that hate the last book, and I have tried so hard to avoid any spoilers. I hope I don't hate it. Nothing worse than investing your time and emotions on a story only to have it ruined. Still, I can't wait to see the movie, as you can probably tell from my avatar!
I also plan to read The Watchmen when I am done with the Twilight saga. After seeing the movie trailer I was reminded of why I always meant to read the graphical novel. It's sorta like a darker version of The Justice League, from what I have heard. After that I will probably go back to Vampires and try out some Anita Blake. |
Christina - the last book was the hardest to get through for me, but I still enjoyed it. It wasn't quite "can't put it down" as the other three....but it still only took me about 5 days to plow through it :)
|
I am getting ready to start Evening bySusan Minot. Just finished the Ice Queen and really liked it.
|
still reading High Five by Janet Evanovich.
I love love love these threads....keeps me updated on good books to add to my list!! |
They also give you a list of books to read a mile long. I have over 200 books on my to read list...but I'm an over achiever when it comes to books ;).
I finished Alone by Lisa Gardner. I'm going to start Plum Lovin' by Janet Evanovich. |
I just finished Jurassic Park (Michael Crighton) as a silly guilty pleasure read as well as Peeps (Scott Westerfield), but I'm going to be reading The Scarlet Letter (Nathaniel Hawthorne) next for school. I'm actually pretty excited about reading it as I've been trying to catch up on some of the classics lately.
|
Changed my mind about On Thin Ice, the Olympics are over and I've had enough sports-themed reading for the time being. Instead I'm reading Bachelorette #1 by Jennifer O'Connell; after that I suppose with the election on the horizon I should read some political stuff like David Baldacci?
|
I loved Sookie stackhouse novels cristina! I also have to say I loved the first Meyers book, really dont like the last two as much. Disappointing for me. The first 6 or 7 of the anita blake books are also v good, I also think the last few of hers ruined the series, they went from good storylines to oversexed.
|
I liked the first couple Sookie Stackhouse books too, but she is veering into Anita "hump the shark" territory - must EVEYBODY want to have sex with Sookie?
Interestingly though, the Sookie Stackhouse books will be a tv show on HBO called Trueblood (by Alan Ball the same guy who made 6 Feet Under). It premieres next Sunday and I am definitely going to check it out. |
Oh oh oh.
Ive just started reading the Twilight series NO telling me what happens! I love my gothic horror, vampires, werewolves n witches etc. I have books in storage, ive been forbiddon from buying anymore by my mother and boyfriend but i just dont see me listening to them some how.mwahaha plus i have run up rediculous amounts of library fines (sorry mum.hehe) i see it as paying for my brain to develop...ok i cant think of another cheesy excuse...il pay you back...pwomise :D |

Whats annoying is i woulda had that book finished in a few hours. Its one of those cant put it down/easy to read books.
I left it at home and ive been at my bfs house for 2 weeks and am having withdrawel symptoms from it!Dammit! lol How on earth did someone get their hands on the copy-damn them aswell! I get addicted to series like this. Has anyone read anything by kelley Armstrong or L.J Smith. L.J Smith is 90's point horror but if you love that whole vampire brothers/mortal girl torn between them thing, you will LOVE her work..oo i love this site even more now :D xxx |
i just started the 7th Harry Potter ( this is the second time that i am reading this one.) i am also reading the Navigator by Clive Cussler. this one is going kinda slow because i am reading it on my breaks at work.
|
I finished Plum Lovin'. I'm going to start Butchers Hill by Laura Lippmann.
I didn't get much read during the Olympics. I'm certainly making up for it now! LOL |
I LOVE Jen Lancaster--own all three of her books. I can definitely relate to a very expensive reading habit!
I just finished "Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict" for the second time! Fun book! Will be starting "The Matters at Mansfield" by Carrie Bebris soon! (Mystery series with Jane Austen characters--very well written!) Lisa |
I finished the House at Riverton and it was kind of eh. The mystery that interested me was initially too obvious and then completely dropped. It did have a very compelling beginning and the ending was okay, I found the middle of the novel such a slog I almost gave up on it!
In contrast, I just finished Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Soceity and I loved it. It was hard to get started, I almost gave up (I find epistolary novels overly twee) but by page 67, I was completely hooked and just drank the novel as quickly as possible! A great book, I will probably give a copy to my mom for Christmas. Picked up a stack from the library today, I'm so behind. Not sure what I'll read next! |

Just starting to read
Secrets of a Former Fat Girl by Lisa Delaney |
Started re-reading George RR Martin's series A Song of Ice and Fire- I'm still on book one A Game of Thrones - only to find out that the chick at the bookstore was wrong - there is no next book coming out at the end of this month. So crushed... but I'm still gonna re-read them in anticipation for whenever it does finally come out.
|
Neverwhere...a novel by Neil Gaiman. I really have started to love his unusual weird and not normal books. I like not normal LOL
|
I just finished Small Favor by Jim Butcher. I love his Dresden files books. Now I am looking of ideas of what to read next. I love science fiction and fantasy stories.
GatorgalstuckinGa: I loved Neverwhere. Neil Gaimen is an awesome writer. Stardust and Good Omens (co-authored with Terry Pratchett) are my favorites by Gaimen. |
After finishing all four of the Twilight series (in only 2.5 weeks!) I picked up Inside the Kingdom by Carmen bin Ladin and am now reading Mad Dash by Patricia Gaffney. I have all the Jen Lancaster books up next followed by Host by Stephenie Meyer and a couple others that I can't remember the title/author.
|
I am currently working my way through....Memoriors of a Geisha. I only have time to read to though on the train to school twice a week. The rest of the time, my head is in my math book!:book2::book2:
