Hee, ThePrettyOne... Target has some cute things, though the last time I bought something from Target, it fell apart almost instantly. This made me sad. You've rarely ever been in a Wal Mart? Wow! I've been in more Wal Marts than I can count, AND SUPER Wal Marts too; I just wouldn't buy clothes there except the t-shirts. Their t-shirts are CUTE and some of them fit very nicely.
I've never heard of or been to Annie Sez and Filenes Basement... I'm assuming it's kind of like Rugged Warehouse, though - where designers drop off things that they don't want/need/couldn't sell/slightly damaged/what have you and then get sold at discount prices... if so... **** YES, I LOVE stores like that! I usually shop name brands on clearance if possible; buying most name brand things full price just isn't worth it.
Haha we just never had WalMart's on Long Island. A few years ago they opened a couple. But they are still pretty few and far between. I only recently turned to Target for clothing. Their Mossimo and Isaac Mizrahi stuff is cute!
Those store's actually carry regular items. They are still a little pricey and carry things like Prada and Coach and Roberto Cavalli, but sometimes you can catch a GREAT deal! I got a pair of Hudson jeans for $80 marked down from $159. I thought I loved them in the store but those jeans are built for someone with serious hips....they look baggy and silly on me. Guess I shoulda checked that dressing room mirror twice!! I gave them away I got my FAVORITE jeans, designer is See Thru Soul, at Annie Sez, they were $100 marked down to $19.99
I love shopping and creating new outfits. I though I would NEVER get into the long shirt over leggings and a good pair of boots, but turns out I look pretty cute in it
I would prefer to not shop at Lane Bryant, but my size and finances dictate that I must. I only shop there when I have a coupon and usually end up getting $300 worth of clothing for $100.
Other than that, I shop at thrift stores, consignment stores, occasionally at Torrid (the Phat version of Hot Topic ) and Nordstrom Rack (the discount store for Nordstrom).
I am ethically opposed to supporting Walmart by shopping there and have never and will not give them my money.
SoulBliss: I saw the movie "The Cost of Low Prices" which is a documentary on Wal Mart. They DO have some unethical practices. Unfortunately, most stores like it have them, as well, Wal Mart is just especially known for it. I thought you typed "ethnically" at first, though, and I thought, "Hmmm... is Wal Mart racist or something? I love Nordstrom Rack. I'm all about buying nice, name brand stuff at cheap prices. Yeeeah! And Torrid has really cute clothes - more cute than some of Hot Topic's stuff, as it's more stylistically diverse.
I've never set foot (I actually typed "food" initially - I must be HUNGRY) into a Lane Bryant. Before gaining weight, I thought it was for "old fat people"
I've never been to an Ann Taylor Loft, either - just not my style - too conservative for my tastes. My mom LOVES Ann Taylor stuff, though... and if you immediately become one size smaller upon walking in, no WONDER she loves it so much! I actually weigh as much as my mom does right now... and at my highest weight, I was 30 pounds larger than her! How EMBARRASSING!
Aphil - I buy bras and underwear from Target, too... "designer" undergarments are OVERPRICED! Hot Topic has some cute things, too... t-shirts especially... here's a funny story:
I worked at a Hot Topic for a short time when I was younger - it was the summer between 17 and 18; my birthday is at the end of August. There were two general types of people who went there: A) postcard "punk" kids and B) "trendy" kids who just want to try "new, edgy" trendy things - think "urban" and "preppy" types.
Anyway, this valley girl kind of chick saw shirts for the band Thursday and Taking Back Sunday. They're emo-pop-punk bands; not my cup of tea, but they were somewhat popular at the time. She said, "Okay, um, so, like, I REALLY LIKE That shirt that says 'thursday' - I also like 'taking back Sunday' but like... do you have shirts that say, like, Friday? or taking back Friday? or Monday? are they, like, all sold out or what?"

When I was in the US a couple of weeks ago I realized that I could fit into the larger cut size 12s. I had no clue what to do!!! It was like suddenly the whole entire store was open to me! I can`t wait to shop express. I need to lose like 10 more pounds and I`m sure I`ll be there. We`ll, in January when I get back to the US of course.
Other than that, I`m lucky that archaeologists don`t have to have a sense of style. Good jeans, good leather boots (redwings), and a shirt from whatever country I was last in. I teach my classes in that outfit. Now that I am skinnier though, I may get away from that look. Maybe wear heels and a skirt
SoulBliss-I also think that Wal-Mart is extremely unethical, and I shop at other places and pay higher on things that I can-such as most clothing, health food shops, and hand made goods.
Unfortunately, I live in a small town in Indiana, and if you run out of something in the middle of cooking dinner, or your child comes home after school and needs posterboard for a project due tomorrow, it is really the only place in our small town that you can go. We usually take a trip into Indianapolis (our capital city-about 40 minutes away) once or twice a month for most things...but Wal-Mart is inevitable in many small towns. You simply cannot get what you need anywhere else, unless you go out of town.
Aphil, I have the same issues with Walmart. Luckily for me, I live in a large metropolitan area and I can find what I need at locally owned and socially aware businesses, often within walking distance of my house. But if I moved to a small town, I'd be thrilled to find a neighbor like you!
Nightengaleshane, I don't fool myself and realize that most retailers have unethical practicesand aren't "fair trade" in the slightest. When I am not so fat, I will be able to be more choosy about the clothing I buy. Apparently, fair trade, organic, sustainable companies don't belive that fat people want to support their causes too! The only things I can find in my size are SOCKS!!!
Aphil and Phantastica, I am with you! I am extremely blessed in that I live in an area where I can make different choices with little to no inconvenience. When I go to New York in the Summers (upstate New York) I have to bring EVERYTHING I could possibly need for 6 weeks because there is ONLY Walmart as an option besides an overpriced and sparsely-stocked grocery store.

Thanks!
Yeah...the small town life. I feel like I am surrounded with NASCAR, monster trucks, Marlboro, and mullets.
SoulBliss-What kind of styles would you like to wear if they made them in your size? There are a lot of wonderful people that sew. There are people who recycle old clothing and make patchwork hippie wear out of old clothing, and lots of cool things!

I would LOVE to have a seamstress make things for me but I cannot afford that at this time. I know how much work goes into just one garment and I wouldn't feel right paying less than what it is worth! I like lots of the same things you have mentioned as well as "yoga" pants (flared leg) and "Thai" pants, peasant blouses, natural fabrics and comfy cuts. I think after I get down below 200 pounds I will invest in a few items.
For years and years I've had pretty much the same style. Jeans and a concert tee shirt or baggy military surplus pants and "wife-beater" tanks. I used to spend my summers in a corset at the ren faire and the school year in my catholic school uniform so comfort became supremely important to me.
Recently I've discovered the beauty of a really good fitting plain tee shirt. I'm all about American Apparel now. They make a great long, fitted tee with a very deep v-neck that I absolutely love. They're not overly conservative, and are so easy to care for. (I love my plaid bondage dress in the back of my closet, but it's such a pain to clean).
Now I just have to break out the silk screening stuff and decorate some of these babies.
Favorite places to shop - wherever is on sale! Seriously, since I grocery shop at Walmart I end up buying most of my clothes there.
That would be me as well. You can get everything in one location...automotive, home interior, groceries, clothing...why shop anywhere else. I'm a Wal*Mart junkie, just left there, but for groceries and an upcoming birthday party I'm throwing on Saturday. No clothes this time. When I do pick up clothing, I usually shop in the juniors section cause I like the Jordache low rise jeans the best.
A dear friend of mine used to joke that every piece of clothing I own is a "basic." I own a lot of simple, conservative clothes. I prefer to think of my clothes as classic, but whatever. Most of the time you will find me in jeans and a t-shirt for my every-day life.
I am now struggling with how to dress the part for my first "real" job. I teach at a college, and because I have students younger and much older than me, I need to appear professional. I don't want to wear a suit every day yet, though!
I dearly love dressing up, and LOVE to wear "girly" things. Give me flowing skirts, lace, yummy fabrics, and I am a happy woman.
I read back over all that and I'm not sure it all makes sense, but it's me!

Since gaining weight I haven't been one for fashion I've always had my own sense of style anyway, but what I like to wear looks like crap so what's the point
Now that I work with little kids all day, I pretty much just wear the t-shirt and jean thing.
Quote:
My favorite store is Joyce Leslie, hands down. Also Forever 21, Charolette Russe, then designer "discount" stores like Annie Sez and Filenes Basement. I say "discount" because most of the good stuff is fairly equal to retail, like Seven jeans and Michael Kors. I spend over $100 on jeans occasionally, but not much else. $30 for a shirt is my average. I get tired of things quickly and own at LEAST 2,000 pieces between my 2 closets
I admit I have gotten clothing at Target. Their new Mossimo jeans are to die for! They have cute sweaters during the winter. It's not particularly "cheap" either, lol, especially their Cashmere!!!
I have never even been ina WalMart. We've only recently gotten them on Long Island...there kinda of a new thing
Actually Mossimo jeans are old, Target use to carry them YEARS ago. Probably about 10 yrs! I LOVED Mossimo jeans, they are really comfortable, and after Target quit carrying them I quit shopping there for the most part. Just recently discovered that they have them again when we were shopping for DH, he is 6'5" and very hard to shop for around here. I was pretty excited, my DH thought I was nuts cause I haven't been excited about clothes in a lonnnnng time. Still probably won't buy any til I lose more weight
