Oh. Oh. Oh!!! Here's another common misusage that drives me round the bend: When people use the contraction, "there's," when what they mean is "there're." Example: "There's pears in the fridge." Like nails on a chalkboard to me.
And the last one (<cough> for today <cough>), I promise: People who say "went," when they mean "gone," as in, "I'd went to the store, where there's toys for sale." Horrible!! Rae |
This one's kind of mean, but since we're on the topic:
People don't 'go', they say, exclaim, remark, opine.. "She went, " Oh my God! Look at the toys!" It's along the same lines as " And then she's all, "Get away!" and he's all "no, it's my couch!"....(sigh). |
Soulbliss- Thanks for your response!

You are not "invisible" to me CHRISTINE....
oops! are "......" quotations around words all right? getting confused.... |
Not intending to hijack the thread or sound curmudgeonly, but I was reading an article and I realized one of the most irritating verbal things to me:
I loathe the term "preggers". |
I also loathe the term "preggers" and "prolly" and all the others that have been mentioned!
|
I wonder if the "goes" instead of "says" comes from how children are taught their animal noises. As in "the cow goes moo."
I probably didn't punctuate that correctly. But "goes" and "I'm all" used to mean "said" both annoy me also. |
I have to say that some of the words that have been mentioned are said IRL in fun. My name is in fun. Feelin' Groovy, taken from the 59th Street Bridge Song by Simon and Garfunkel, is an example. Or a rock singer shouting "Are ya'll feelin' all right tonight???" This doesn't make me cringe!! It's self expression! "A cow goes moo" doesn't annoy me. It's all in fun when you're playing with your child. Eventually, they'll learn the proper usage. So what if it's not grammatically correct? We're talking to babies here and having a good time!
Language doesn't always have to be formal. There's no law that says you can't slack if you feel like it. A lot of it is cultural. It is how people have been raised to speak, even though it is incorrect, it is their upbringing and they don't know any better. Blame it on our educational system for lack of caring. When you're talking and joking with friends, slang is thrown into the mix to add personality or to get a point across. If it's wrong, everyone knows it. Sometimes it's just fun to say it. In this case (online), sometimes it's just fun to type it. It doesn't annoy me because I see a personality shining through that gives me a better idea of who that person is in the way they express themselves. What annoys me are the blatant spelling and grammatical errors, more than the "way" people express themselves. If we all went by the book, we'd be pretty darn boring. Oh, and I'm sure there are some errors in my post as well but I'm not going to worry about it. lol The quote in my siggy is incorrect but it's what Chalene said. Doesn't make her stupid. It's how she wanted to say it! |
feelingroovy, I think we all accept that some things are acceptable at some times, even though technically incorrect (like "feelin" ;) ). From the posts I've read here (and I think I've actually read them all!), people usually explain that it's inappropriate in a professional environment or in formal publications and such. No one's said anyone is downright stupid for using or doing any of these things. I'm sure there are things that even get on your nerves that other people find perfectly acceptable :^:
And I'll add another vote for "preggers." It's not even short for anything--it's the same number of syllables and letters as just saying or writing the entire word "pregnant." |
jilly-I also dislike "prego" when people refer to pregnancy. I never used that, or preggers...
*sigh* |

Jillybean - I was thinking the exact same thing before reading your post. Prego, Preggers...how about we just say pregnant?
|
Yeah, "preggers" and "prego" seem to strip pregnancy of its dignity, don't they?
I cringe as I type this one I hate it so bad: hearing people say she "squirted out more kids" -- GROSS. |
Along the same lines, "Popping" out more kids.
The word 'pop' has been grating to me as of late, we pop in to stores, pop things in our mouths, pay for things by the pop,....it's like nuking things in the microwave. There's nothing nuclear about it ( that I know of.)... and lastly, alcoholics have a problem with alcohol. Shopaholics? Carbaholics? What's carbohol and shopohol? |

New one to add to the list: people who don't know what is/is not appropriate to say on a message board. Recently, there was a topic on here about whether or not people on here go to church and why/why not. We went for a VERY long time (5 pages of posts, I believe) without anyone saying anything inappropriate, defensive, or argumentative about religion, but it only took 1 or 2 silly people to ruin it. I yearn for the day when we are all mature enough and thoughtful enough to have the foresight to know what we can express and when to keep things to ourselves for the sake of harmony and intelligent discussion :^: And I'm sure our fabulous mods yearn for that, too ;) |
