Does anyone microwave eggs?

  • Sometimes I need a low-calorie, low-carb, hearty snack. I like eggs, but not hard-boiled. And I want something without a bunch of dishes that doesn't take much time or work (I have 3 little kids).

I was thinking about microwaving them, but it just seems... weird.

Anyone microwave their eggs? Do they taste okay?
  • I used to microwave scrambled eggs all the time. Worked a treat. There are some good instructions on the web. The trick was to stir them half way through, I think.

It inspired me so much I now have an egg boiler. It can boil six eggs at once and poach two.
  • I love doing eggs in the microwave. I try all of the mug recipes. I use Egg Beaters 1/2 cup and one wedge of laughing cow cheese and salt and pepper, so delicious. Look up Egg Mug recipes on the net, they have some really good ones. It's also under 100 calories
  • Thanks!

I was actually just feeling peckish. I have eggs in the fridge (we have chickens) so I figured... what the heck? I might as well try it.

45 minutes on high for one scrambled egg is what I did. It was very very weird to watch it puff up. Consistency not quite the same as a pan-scrambled egg, but well worth the trade-off of only having a bowl and spoon to clean. Plus it was easy!
  • Glad it worked out for you! I microwave mine in a mug with some cheese and veggies and it always turns out fine.
  • Someone on another forum told me she made omlettes in the microwave in a zip lock freezer bag. Just added any veggies etc that she wanted. I never tried it but it sounds easy enough. Here's a group of sites you might want to look at, and one is a video of how it's done. She specified "freezer bags" I think because they are more durable and would hold up to the heat. Also, you would need to be careful about BPA.

  • Thanks for this thread. I had an uncle who did this but I never tried it.

I'm a lazy cook. A skillet, plate, bowl etc seems like a production to me for a couple scrambled eggs. I'm going to give this a a go!
  • I bought a microwave egg cooker at a dollar store, I use it for soft cooked eggs for breakfast or cook them hard for an addition to a salad. Love it!
  • Pampered Chef sells some kind of two-bowl stoneware thing for doing eggs in the microwave. I haven't used it but I've seen it and it apparently works pretty well.
  • I do it all the time. I add a little butter or coconut oil or even just water to the mug/bowl to reduce sticking and I stir the eggs every 30 seconds. I stop the cooking just before they are done and let them sit for a minute - residual heat finishes the cooking so they aren't overdone. Takes only 1-3 minutes for 2-3 eggs, depending on the microwave. I usually use a ceramic bowl that has a cover, intended for soups I think.
  • This is great, thanks!
  • I do! I have a tray made for microwaving eggs. Works wonders when I'm in a hurry.
  • I was just reading through this out of curiosity since I might start microwaving my eggs. I noticed in post #4 Bananamuffin said she microwaved her eggs for 45 minutes on high. Do you think maybe she meant 45 seconds? LOL
  • My go-to breakfast is microwaved eggs mixed in with rice, and kimchi/hot sauce on top.

But if you're looking for a low-carb option, allow me to recommend baking: crack a dozen eggs, mix with grated cheese and maybe a bit of cubed meat. Pour into muffin tins, bake at 375 until they are firm but still jiggle in the morning. Let cool, chuck them in some tupperware, and you have snacks ready to go for the week! 😊
  • Get a microwave bowl that a small, normal bagel would fit in. Put 2 eggs in the bowl and whip them with a hand egg beater. About 45 seconds will do. Then warm the bagel and pull it apart of cut it into two sides. Then put the eggs in for 90 seconds. And watch. At about one minute the eggs will expand upward - they will be about 7 inches around and expand up about 8, 9, or 10 inches - then the weight will be too much to support and they will fold over. The eggs will recede until they are about 3 or 4 inches high. It varies. Put them between the bagels and eat. Very good and with a little practice you cam make them in 2 minutes.
