Sushi is my absolute favorite food (especially those durned specialty rolls) and I cannot count calories while I eat it, so right now my strategy is to eat it less and enjoy it more

Sushi is my favorite food. Heck, I love Japanese food in general. I was happy to see your question.

You are unlikely to find brown rice at a sushi restaurant. Sushi means "with rice", and sushi rice is a sticky, vinegared white rice. That being said, just about anything can be "with rice". You can find veggie rolls, not just raw fish.

Suggestions: Nigiri sushi - Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp, crab.
Rolls - cucumber, California, Rainbow Roll

Avoid: spicy tuna/spicy crab rolls or nigiri sushi. They are made spicy by mixing them with spicy mayonaise. Avoid any of the rolls with cream cheese or mayo. Eel normally has "eel sauce" on it, which is loaded with extra sugar. Nothing tempura (fried in tempura batter).

Edamame is great (steamed soybeans) but normally high in sodium, so if you have a salt problem, ask for no salt on it. Pickled cucumber salad is good too. Clear soup is tasty and low in calories, high in sodium.

Use lower sodium soy sauce.

ENJOY! Now I'm hungry for sushi...mmm

I love sushi

However I didn't love the expense of buying it so I make my own. Very simple and I know exactly whats in it. They work out at about 60 cals per piece (thats one nori sheet rolled up and cut in 6 portions).

I generally use avocado, salmon (or chicken/tuna) and cucumber as a filling and serve with soy sauce and wasabi. I do use sushi rice but you can use aborio at a pinch. It just needs to be a short grain rice as they are more glutinous and tend to "stick" better and a good rice vinegar/seasoning.

I actually made some just on the weekend as I was having a few friends over for drinks. I should have made a double batch cause they were gone in a flash!

Aso, even if you est within your plan, calories, points, carbs, etc. the scale will be up for a few days. the seaweed, rice, soy, miso, is all tremenously salty and will show up on the scale as water...so enjoy and KNOW this is going to happen.

BTW we are sushi 1 or 2 times a week and LOVE it!
