Default What happened to TOM?!

Hi everyone. I am a little confused. I was supposed to get TOM last week and instead I just got "brown spotting". Has this ever happened to you? I took 2 home PT, but both said negative; im a little concerned because technically I never got TOM. Also, if TOM never came, why did my weight go up 2 pds? This past weekend I did mess up; but not enough to make my weight go up 3 pds! Last monday I weighed in at 129.8. This morning I weighed in at 132.4. Could this still be water weight from the off weekend and potential TOM? Sorry if this is confusing; I just wanted to see if this has ever happened to any of you! Thanks for listening!

Hey Dianne,

That's SCARY and I hope you figure it out. Have you been restricting food a lot? Notice anything "funny," e.g. sore breasts or weird moods or appetite changes? Are you always super regular? Hopefully the home PTs are right.

The only time that ever happened to me was when I was pregnant :-)

Is it possible you might still get it this month? I've had times where I got the brown spotting early and then my actual period started later. Are you very regular?

In terms of the weight gain, I've got the same thing going on right now. I went away for one night, ate maybe 4 meals off plan, and was up 3 lbs. I know I didn't eat an extra 10,000 calories - figure it's extra sodium. It's coming off slowly.

OH no! You all have me really scared now. I am usually pretty regular. I dont have sore breasts or anything but I usually get that around my period. I am freaking! I PRAY I am not pregnant! I know its a blessing to have a child, but I am not ready!

What are other signs of early pregnancy that arent similar to period symptoms?

How long after the spotting did you get your actual period? Last time I had my period was January 15th and ended around the 19th. I got the brown spotting on the 17th of this month but still no period. What is going on?

Pregnancy signs...unfortunately it's different for everyone! I have been pregnant once and I noticed my appetite approximately doubled and my boobs were so sore all the time that I could hardly function. Also, during...certain activities, something just felt "wrong" down there, like all wasn't normal.

Are you on birth control? I am on Ocella (same formula as Yasmine) and usually have very light periods. I've had a couple of super ones as well maybe once or twice a year- almost what you are describing. Once I didn't even get my period, and of course FREAKED OUT. I've always had regular pap smears/gyno exams though with nothing abnormal. I assume it's not abnormal then for people with very light periods to sometimes have even lighter ones, though I'm obviously not a doctor so take this anecdotally and with a grain of salt.

I don't have a period... I actually spot occasionally, and I still have PMS symptoms during what would be my time of the month, without the period. And I've never been pregnant.

It can be a side effect from weight loss, having low body fat, being at a weight that's too low for your body, or just the stress of your body dealing with it being treated completely differently (whether that's a good difference or a bad difference, it can still throw body systems off whack). So! It need not be connected with pregnancy.

You might want to run to your doctor and just get checked out... see if your body weight/body fat are in order, hormones and blood test values are in order, and just get a general sense for how you're doing. (I'm actually heading to my doctor on Wednesday. It makes me nervous, but it's for the best to get my blood drawn and weight checked and put my and my husband's mind at ease.)

Thanks everyone! I made a gyno appt. for 3:15. I normally have regular periods and have never in my life missed a period. I have noticed my boobs are bigger but they arent sore. But again, these could all just be signs of my period. I am not on birth control but I did take plan B back in december. Not sure if its from that considering that was 2 months ago and have had a normal period since I took it, but maybe? Oh well. I guess I will find out this afternoon.

I had unprotected sex about 2.5-3 weeks ago. If I am pregnant, would it be showing up on the PT's or is it still too soon? LIke I said, I have taken 2 already and both were negative. That is why I am going to the dr., so I can know for sure..

I wouldn't get all freaked out just yet! While I am NOT regular and never have been (yeah, great times for husband and I, LOL) I noticed in 2009-2010 when I was actively losing that I skipped entire periods every other month or so. My last period stopped on Jan 7th and I haven't had another one yet.

I attribute this to my new low cal/exercise routine.

Being pregnant is different from everyone, all 3 of mine were different in every aspect but in the very early stages you may feel more tired than usual, tender, swollen breasts, lots of cramping like you are about to start a period and around the 6-8 week point may begin to feel nauseated toward things which normally wouldn't bother you like certain smells, foods, etc. A lot of people commented that I looked "glowy" whatever that means, lol.

Still, I wouldn't panic yet, just be observant to any of the above symptoms. They could be stress-induced, both emotionally and physically (i.e diet and exercise)

Good luck!

Edited to answer your question: Some tests do not show up until about the 5-6th day before your missed period, so you I would say a HPT cannot pick up until sometime during the 4-6th week of pregnancy. The earliest I was able to detect was 6 weeks.

Don't worry yet. Almost every time I start a new diet/fitness regime, I skip a period. I freak out. I take a test and another and then finally--a full cycle late--I'll get a period. My GYN says my body's response to fitness efforts is to not ovulate until it understands what the heck I'm doing to it, then I'm back on track.

At least in my case, the doc said the "brown sludge" type of periods were also due to the lack of ovulation that month. I hope you find out your situation is similarly nothing to worry about. Good luck!

Hi everyone!! Thanks again for all of your responses. I just got back from the gyno and he said I am NOT pregnant. Like many of you have said, he thinks its because of my recent calorie change and starting to exercise again! He also said when he was listening to my heart that I have a really slow pulse so the exercise must be working. That was nice to hear! I know being pregnant is a blessing but I really was not ready for it; regardless, I would have taken responsibility if needed to! Just thought Id let you alll know the results

Phew! See, don't you feel better now that you know? Even when a pregnancy is an okay situation, having it pop up unexpectedly can be nerve-wracking!

A dieting body is a confused body, but hopefully you'll adjust to your new calorie and fitness regime in time to have a normal period next month.
