Default question regarding yoga

Hi friends, I have been attending yoga classes5 times a week for the past 1 month and i am also counting calories. Every one around me are saying that I look thin and i also feel the same but my weight hasn't changed much. I started with 139 but lost 6lbs even before I started yoga. SSo after I started yoga I lost around 2 to 3 lbs. So why am I looking thin when my scale hasn't changed. I am confused. Any thoughts regarding this?

that's a lot of yoga. I love yoga!! In 1 month, you haven't had much time to build up a lot of muscle, but by using your body as resistance, I wouldn't be too surprised if you had more muscle from yoga. It also helps you be in touch with your body, so maybe you're carrying yourself differently. When you're already smaller, just a few pounds can also make a difference with how you look. I bet it's a combination of all of them! Keep up the yoga, it will get even better

Hi pink flower, you may be right. I will keep up with yoga. I love it too and my instructor is awsome. She makes me feel better even after a crappy day.

I had the same thing happen to me when I started a consistent practice in 2007. I probably lost about 5 lbs maybe, but EVERYONE was telling me how thin I looked and how much weight I had lost. I felt really weird about it because I really hadn't lost any weight.

Weight can be really odd...when I moved to a large city a few years ago I started walking miles a day...I went down a pants size and never lost a lb. How does this happen!?! I was sure I'd lost at least 10 lbs as my pants were literally falling off me and I had to buy all new sizes. Nope, not down a pound.

If the type of yoga you are doing involves holding your body weight up, you will start to see muscle being built. It takes a lot of strength to do some of the poses.

I just started yoga a month ago and have noticed this too. It's definitely too early to be significant muscle gain, so maybe it's in my head? I go twice a week to a class and do the beginner yoga video from exercise TV 2-3 other days. I think yoga taps into a lot of odd muscles we're not used to using, so if they're going from atrophy to regular use they could certainly be tightening a little! Does wonders for my blood pressure and anxiety too, so if it doesn't change the way I look ultimately that's ok.
