Question Questions about milk/dairy products

I'm wondering about reduced fat dairy products. I find I can't get used to skim (that blue color - ) milk and have been consuming 1% instead.

I also have tried all sorts of lower fat sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. and find that most of them are kinda "gummy".

Has anyone found any alternatives that taste good?

Thanks,
Dagmar

FAGE Greek yoghurt 0% fat! It's very delish!

What about Kefir? You can actually make it yourself with FF milk and it's not blue in colour

LF or FF Feta cheese! Yum! Same goes for Mozerella

Dagmar,

I still drink 1% milk - I just add the calories & fat into my daily count. I've never tried skim, but I honestly don't think that I could do it. I also still use full fat mayo - I just limit my portion size. A TB is usually more then enough for me to mix with my fish because it has such a strong flavor.

I've mostly noticed a strange aftertaste in fat free products - low fat is usually fine for me. Keep in mind that not everything is going to taste exactly the same as the whole fat version, but you are going to have to retrain your taste buds to a certain degree.

Otherwise, maybe try mixing the products with something before you eat them? Like, creaming low fat cream cheese with flavored tuna.

Dagmar~while I don't drink a lot of milk (just on my cereal and sometimes in my smoothies) I do drink skim milk. You get used to the "blueness" after a while. I love Fage 0% plain yogurt (and you can use it as a substitute for sour cream). BUT, I cannot, cannot stand low fat or fat free sour cream. YUCK! I swear, it tastes like milk that has had flour added to it to thicken it. Instead I buy full fat sour cream and mix it half and half with Z Trim--that cuts the fat and calories in half and that's good enough for me. You can also mix the Z Trim with cream cheese, but I've yet to try that because I don't eat a lot of cream cheese. As for regular cheese, sometimes I get the lower fat variety--especially if mixing it into a recipe--I can't tell the difference then.

I am OK with ff yogurt. I recently made the decision to stop drinking milk (some research I read--Harvard School of Public Health--on hormones from the constantly pregnant/lactating cows) and switched to plain unflavored soymilk. Some brands taste better than others. It is calcium/Vit. D fortified.

I love fat free Greek yogurt (I prefer the Trader Joe's brand, but Fage is good too). I mix 1/2 cup of my breakfast cereal into it instead of eating my cereal with milk. I also use it as a substitute for sour cream.

In my coffee and tea, I love fat free half and half. It tastes like the regular stuff to me.

I also like fat free cream cheese and unsweetened soy milk. The only thing I use skim milk for is cooking; I can't drink the stuff (but then, I can't drink 1%, 2%, or whole milk either--I just don't like milk).

I also love the laughing cow lite cheese wedges and bites, low fat feta (the fat free stuff doesn't work for me) and low fat chevre (when I can find it at Trader Joe's). And I've found soy cheese to be palatable in some recipes.

For the most part, I don't bother with mayo; I just use mustard instead. I use light mayo for cooking, but you can't really taste it as much then.

There is really nothing wrong with staying with 1% milk.

I like lowfat dairy, but I dont do fat free dairy

For me at first, I thought I was drinking water. I didn't like the taste at all but after awhile it grew on me. Have you tried drinking Soy Milk? My sister hates 1% but loves soy. I think Soy tastes good but only vanilla for me. Good luck finding something!

I personally don't mind fat-free milk at all. I do like the ''enriched" with extra calcium even more. It is a little thicker and less "blue" than the regular. The brand I buy is Shamrock Farms but I think that is only available in Arizona.

I love fat-free sour-cream!! I don't think it tastes any different. I guess we all have different tastes! I absolutely love the Trader Joe's non-fat greek style yogurt. Soooo creamy & delicious!!
