Sweet potatoes aren't on the do not eat list in the book for P1..

Also, the FAQ that's at the top of this forum for P1 lists Dr. Ian as saying that sweet potatoes are okay for P1, but not potatoes that are white inside.

Ok, so there is a controverse there.

But logically there is no other starch (carbohydrate) in the P1 phase other that brown rice. I will not chance it.

I have been reading alot of post where people say that have not lost weight in P1. Maybe too much rice or sweet potatoes.... I don't know.

Anyway, I think he may have said it but it think he may have revised his thinking since the website is newer than the book. Many of you keep saying that the book has many controversies.

Also his FAQ dates when the book came out, so... again changes may have been made since to the original list.

I am not here to make waves but to pass on information.

Live and let live is my motto....

I am not the expert here either, BUT....

Some of the foods listed as "no-no's" are on the meal plans in phase I in Extreme Fat Smash. For example, for dinner on day 6 or 7 (I don't have the book right in front of me right now) you have a sweet potato as a side for dinner. Many nights, for dinner, on EFS, you have some form of meat.

I'm really confused now...

I don't think you should compare both smash diets as they do not have the same goal.
From my understanding Fat smash is for people who have more than 25 lbs to lose. The extreme fat smash diet is for people that only need to lose 10 to 25 lbs to lose.
Consequently the dietary needs of someone needing to lose 50 lbs compared to that of someone needing to lose 10 lbs are not the same.
That could explain the differences in foods.
I think you shouldn't compare both and stick to the one that really reflects your particular needs.

Wow!
I didn't mean to cause controversy after 1 post.

I based my information on 2 things:
Number one - In the phase 1 faq's, there is the following information:
"Q-The book says to eat 2 cups of brown rice, 1 cup of oatmeal, 4 egg whites etc. Am I supposed to eat these foods in that quantity each day or is it merely an option? Also, can I eat instant oatmeal, fat-free yogurt that has fruit in it, and red potatoes?? Thanks for your help. I want to follow the plan but am confused.
A-Those are the limits, you do not eat all of it. Only sweet potatoes are allowed. Red potatoes are still white potatoes and do not have the fiber content or nutritional value of sweet potatoes. White is the indicator of the "meat" or inside the skin. The lighter the color the less nutritious."
Number two - In by book, there is not a list of foods allowed for phase 1, it simply states:
All fruits in any quantity
All vegetables in any quantity, except:
NO white potatoes
NO avocados

I am not a member of the website, but if he decided after the book was published that sweet potatoes were disallowed in phase 1 then I guess I was wrong.

I would think sweet potatoes would be okay (for those of you who've been eating them), only based on the fact that corn is a really starchy vegetable and it's not off limits.

I ate sweet potatoes 3 or 4 times during P1 and I lost weight. To each their own

Default yams are not allowed

Hi folks, I'm new, starting fat smash tomorrow. so, tonight I go on the fat smash website and I decided what the heck, and I signed up for 3 months. and so far I'm really glad I did, there is a lot there that is really going to help me.

so anyway, I remember reading this post earlier today about the question on sweet potatoes and if they are allowed. I think that if it says it in the book, or in the faq, that the rules have changed since then because this information was just posted recently in the message boards of the fat smash website. I'm just going to copy and paste the question and then the answer...

Yams

Are you allowed yams in Phase 1? I thought I might slice them and bake them as if I was having Fries. Thanks

not allowed

White potatoes and sweet potatoes aren't allowed in detox. Yams are most often a different term for sweet potatoes, so they're not allowed either. Hang on, because you can add them back in (sweet potatoes and yams, that is), in phase 2.

Default Sweet Potatoes and Egg Beaters....

Hi -

I just finished up Phase 1 of the Original Fat Smash Diet, compete with the occasional sweet potato, and I lost 9 pounds (I think I ate 1/2 a sweet potato a total of 4 times over the 9 days).

Also, I am not an egg white fan, either, and would have omitted them completely, but my Doctor recommended Egg Beaters. I had them maybe 3 times, with peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc. I just found the Fat Smash section of 3FC, and looked quickly at the FAQ's, and didn't see anything about the Egg Beaters issue!

Good luck, All!
