Was your banana really ripe? Also, what kind of yogurt are you using? If it's nonfat plain unflavored yogurt, that may also be while your smoothie doesn't taste so great. I think vanilla-flavored yogurt makes the best smoothie. You might also try adding a little fresh-squeezed orange juice to it too.
Fresh fruit is usually always tastier than frozen, but not always possible depending on the season and I don't see why you couldn't use frozen fruit instead. However, the quality of frozen fruit does vary a lot, in my opinion. I prefer to get name-brand frozen fruit from good stores, but try different brands to find one you like. Peaches especially seem to vary in quality. I really like the frozen fruit from Trader Joe's.
