BARGOO ~ I agree -- you know, I went to church and Sunday School straight from the time I was baby until I was 10-11 years old. Our dear minister loved JESUS so much and was so gracious. He loved & accepted everyone. I felt that I could see a glow in his face & he smiled all the time.
I still recall & sing songs that I learned there too (just didn't learn the Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam one; not sure why). It was a United Church, and I know that different churches do teach different songs.
My 3 favorite songs were JESUS LOVES ME; LITTLE BROWN CHURCH (it was a little brown church too); and my favorite hymn was HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (which we sang every Sunday to open the service).
."
"Holy, Holy, Holy" Is my all time favorite hymn but I have others I love, as well. "Standing On Holy Ground" and "We shall Behold Him" are just two of my favorites..
Yes, there were/are many that I loved too, like -- BE THOU MY VISION, IN THE GARDEN, ABIDE WITH ME, WE SHALL BEHOLD HIM, IT IS NO SECRET, OH HOLY NIGHT, and so many others ...
I see we agree on "We Shall Behold Him" I also know "Be Thou My Vision".I recognize ypur other favories as well. Have we been going to the same church ?
GARY ~ DH told me that one time his priest told him not to sing so loud until he knew the songs better ... I couldn't believe it! Then some time later, he told him he was doing so much better. He was a very nice man -- but I guess DH may have been going off key or something.
BARGOO ~ I have been to many different churches in my lifetime, so anything is possible ...
BTW, we have lovely weather here again today @ 73-75 F and it's supposed to go up to 77 F tomorrow. All next week is supposed to be nice too. We are indeed blessed and thankful during this long holiday weekend ... HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all our fellow Canadians out there ...

Gee, we have been so blessed these last two weeks -- with such gorgeous weather; it makes up for the very cold days we had in September. DH has been doing lots of yard maintenace -- esp raking up all the leaves blowing from the neighbours trees; I think he's gathered up 4-5 giant bags already. Plus he has been doing little odd jobs around the house, and his bike runs too ... well, it keeps him busy and that is what is important really.
My day is busy just doing the light housechores, cooking, laundry, paying bills, daily odd jobs, looking after NIKO, managing my pc's (trying to figure everything out), unpacking & sorting, visiting with friends, esp here on the net, answering mail & appts, etc. I spent most of today downloading my security programs for my newer pc, which should have been simple but I ran into a glitch; so I prayed about it and came up with an alternative that worked out for me -- PTL.
We have really nice neighbours around here too; and that makes it much more pleasant to live here. It really is different having your own place; there is a kind of peace that is very comforting. My family always lived in our own homes, so I think I was just used to that; we love that we can do what we want when we need to & visa-versa -- so much more freedom here.
I was finally able to watch one of my favorite church services on the net this week. Now that we don't have transportation, I can watch church on the net. NUMPSTER fixed up my desktop pc so I could watch videos, shows and the like with special stereo sound. I probably could watch them on this laptop too. I use a different pc for different things; it's nice to have a backup now too. We are truly blessed and I am very grateful.
Hope you all are having a great week ... Rosebud

This might not be the right place for this but doing a google search was too overwhelming. I have been reading my bible for the first time on my own and started in proverbs. It says a lot about fearing the lord and I get confused. When I think of fear I think of being afraid, terrified even and I don't see the lord as terrifying. Can someone help me understand a bit better please?
You ask a very good question! One that is difficult to explain sometimes, especially to those that have just started reading from the Bible.
Simply to fear the Lord is our first step towards wisdom, respect and love for Him. As Christians we are not afraid of the Lord for we know we have eternal life through His son Jesus Christ, we also grow in knowledge of how much He loves us and wants nothing but good things for His creation.
Without the fear of the Lord, there is no reason (in their hearts) to respect Him and obey Him. Faithful service to God and obedience to Christ is rooted in the FEAR OF THE LORD.
Complicated but simple...
In the Old Testament God showed us the power he had many times to destroy those that despised Him after he showed them so many times His love.
Reading in the New Testament we see that out of love He sent His Son to take the place of our sins so that believing in Him and repenting of our sins we have nothing to fear.
We are here to help if we can. If you have any specific scripture or questions I would be glad to try and help, there are people here much more knowledgeable than me too.
You may also PM me with any question you may not want posted here.
abbysue, congratulations on your decision to study the Bible. I would recommend the Book of John in the New Testament. One of the most famous scripures is John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Awe ... gee, thanks you guys; geepers, even I forgot it was my birthday until late this afternoon -- I was distracted as DH was trying to put together some mini-bookcases for me and he was upset that he couldn't figure it out. I finally talked him into letting me help him, and we did get two put together by that time. Called it a day for dinner, and that's when I remembered it was my birthday.
So, DH went and got us a quick take-out dinner (I had a roast beef sub) so I didn't have to cook. Not too much choice as we only have one place nearby and it was raining all day on and off. But we've been blessed with great weather lately, so I don't mind at all.
We've had dozens (33+) of Rock Doves visiting our big feeder out in the back yard this week, which tickles DH pink. He's really getting into the birding hobby now; I got him hooked. I think we'll go through lots of bird seed this winter ...
ABBYSUE ~ yes, I had the same question myself some time ago, and found this explanation more than once -- that the word "fear" in this context meant "respect, reverence, or awe" of his might & power & sovereignty ... or a healthy respect for who HE is. I can fear fire and/or have a healthy respect for it too (i.e. when I used fire to heat my home).
The original texts often had more than one meaning for the same word as we do in English. For instance, LOVE -- there is agape LOVE (God's pure love); falling in Love (infatuation); lust Love; friendship Love; family Love, marriage Love, etc.
As BARGOO shares with us, there are many more scriptures that explain that GOD Loves and cares for us (ie the book of John). We love GOD becuz he first loved us (I John 4:10 & 19); and GOD IS Love (I John 4:8 & 19).
"There is NO FEAR in LOVE; but perfect Love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in Love. " (I John 4:18) Then he goes on to say that GOD IS LOVE in the very next verse. We have to read the scriptures in context of one another; and they often explain others as well. I John talks about GOD and His love in great detail.

Yesterday was a busy day starting out at 9AM with dye injection in preparation for bone scan later in day. After injection DIL and I went to breakfast and then to the Mall as I had to wait 4 hours before having the scan. We only went to Macy' and Penneys where I got some new underwear and she got a new purse , we looked around in Coldwater Creek but didn't buy anything because it was time to get back to the Hospital, too bad as they were having a big sale 70% off. Back to the Hospital for the scan , getting out just in time for the afternoon rush hour traffic, seems like the entire city of Sacramento was on 80W at the same time. I was tired when I got home.
About the Scan , oncologist wants it as he has seen a little progression on my lab work. He may want to change the type of treatment I am getting. I am not worried as I know The Great Physician is in charge.
BARGOO ~ to you; that was a long, tiring day. Sending up ^prayers^ for a halt to any progression; we ask for total remission. We thank GOD for His great compassion; and admire your consistant faith. We're standing with ya all the way ...
What do people do wth no prayer partners and no hope ? I feel so sorry for them I wifh they would accept this great free gift that is offered to all.
Thanks for your prayers , rosebud.
