Heres my 2 cents - when I am not feeling secure with my own feet, I slide my hands back and forth on the handles, it mimics the motion of arms when walking but I still feel the bars. Did this make sense?

This is just the tip I needed as I really have fallen on a treadmil because of my balance issue and so fully letting go is not an option at any speed right now! My poor knees!

An update on this: I can pretty much let go the whole time now! Woohoo! I still feel a little unstable sometimes, but mostly I'm ok. I'm stable at 3.5mph and a little shaky at 3.8, so I spend most of my workout at 3.5. If I go slower than that, I feel like I'm not doing anything.

I just had to revive this thread because I have some treadmill questions for the more experienced folks...

I've been using the elliptical and the treadmill for a few months now and I can finally take my hands off the treadmill for the whole time now -- woohoo!!

Here's my question: for those of you who walk on the treadmill, what speed do you usually do? And when you do hill intervals, how much of an incline do you use? I know what's working for me so far, but I like to see what other people are doing.

Also, I'd like to try jogging on the treadmill but I've never done it. I've been jogging outside a few times a week and I'm really enjoying it. What speed did you start out with on the treadmill for jogging or running? Was it hard to keep your balance or was it the same as walking? I don't want to fall down and make a fool of myself!! I'm thinking of trying at my sister's gym this weekend, since there won't be many people around!

Thanks in advance for any advice any of you may have!

3.5 ,but that's only as part of a warm-up and between jogging intervals. If I solely walk in my workout then I do intervals of 4.3.

I only use a 1.0 incline now and never did hill intervals.

I started out at 4.7 ,but that was too fast and I gradually lowered it to 4.4.

If you are walking at 3.5, then I would start jogging at that speed to start. If you find it too slow, then you can gradually raise the speed.

Basically find a speed in which you are comfortable and able to keep a straight posture. I can complete a run at 4.7 ,but my posture suffers and I ended up injuring myself. Running at 4.4 gets my heartrate up just the same, but I'm not gasping for air and hunched over.

I find jogging easier on the treadmill than walking and I'm not the most coordinated person out there. If you take it easy on the speed, then I seriously doubt you will fly off.

I currently walk at 4.0 as a warmup, then jog at 5.2 to 5.4 for half an hour or so, and end up at 6.0 intervals. That's not how I started, however. When I first started running on the treadmill, it was at about 4.8, I think, then I was 5.0 for a long time.

The nice thing about a treadmill is that you can grab a bar with one hand, and slow the speed down quickly with the other if you get tired. I have pretty bad balance, but the only problem I have on a treadmill is trying to take a drink while running. I always have to hold on. I've never seen anyone fly off the treadmill, and I've seen people of all ages going at all different speeds. You'll be fine. Boredom is always a factor, though, so take some good music, or hook into the TV if they offer them at your sister's gym. I've taken to scheduling time on the elliptical at 10:00 am so that I can watch The View.
