September Walking Challenge

Ok Ladies...it's a new month! Time to set your mileage goal for September!

I just barely made my 135 mile August walking goal, but I did make it! Yay me! My September goal is 180 miles. I'm training for the breast cancer 3-Day in Tampa Bay in October, so don't feel any pressure to walk 180 miles yourself. I certainly wouldn't be walking 180 miles unless I needed to in order to prepare for the 60 mile breast cancer walk!

Please join me as we walk our way through September!

:running:

ArtsyGirl 09-01-2006 06:13 PM

I'm in for 90 miles for September with 4 of them done this morning. This might be pushing a bit, but I think I can do it.

Wow Genesis-most impressive!!

Tejas 09-01-2006 08:42 PM

I'm new to 3FC and will make a modest start on the walking challenge. I'm going to say 60 miles and I've done 3 of them today.

Genesis 09-01-2006 09:38 PM

Welcome, Tejas!

60 miles is a GREAT goal and is certainly not modest!

Congrats on your first 3 miles for the month...keep it up!

Tejas 09-02-2006 05:53 AM

Thank you for the welcome. I thought that I could do 3 miles a day for five days a week fairly easily. Then I would add another 15 somewhere along the way.

I like to walk but manage to lose every pedometer I buy. I've marked off a route in the neigbborhood and will use the treadmill.

This should be fun.

Michele L 09-02-2006 09:40 AM

I'm increasing my goal to 85 miles this month! I've made 80 the past two months, so this should be achieveable! I'm also aiming for "Onederland" this month! Only 4 pounds to go!

Michele

UnCafeCvooPlay 09-03-2006 10:14 PM

Hi everyone, I would love to join the challenge. My goal for the month is going to be 80 miles...I look forward to getting to know you all!

cathyxxx 09-04-2006 12:34 PM

good morning gang

I haven't been on the walking thread in months, but I'm back today. I'm off of work and slept in and then did 3 miles with Leslie! :carrot: whooohoooo Now if my boss doesn't mind me sleeping in again tomorrow I will do the same ;) but really I've got to figure out a way to get my walking back in...I'll either have to get up at 5 each morning and do it, or I'll have to walk during lunch, but one way or the other, I've got to get back to it.

Hope everybody has a bkessed day!

Cathy

STACEY99 09-04-2006 02:33 PM

i am new here also and i am going to try walking 60 miles this month good luck to everyone this month. question, when do we check back in? so far i have 3 miles in 57 more to go.

UnCafeCvooPlay 09-04-2006 05:36 PM

I did 3 miles on the treadmill today! woohoo! I really need to find a safe place to walk, where I can keep track of how many miles I'm doing, because this treadmill is NOT reliable, not to mention it's in the dusty garage. I might try to do a couple more miles tonight if I have the energy. Hope everyone is doing well!

Genesis 09-04-2006 06:38 PM

Welcome everybody! So nice to see so many people here this month!

Stacey99, check back in as often as you'd like. I tend to check in fairly regularly to post my miles and keep myself on track. I post my miles in the following format, but you can do whatever you'd like.

September goal = 180 miles
Miles walked = 10
Miles to go = 170

UnCafeCvooPlay 09-05-2006 08:54 AM

I have a quesiton for everyone, is it OK to walk without an incline? I am doing a 0 percent incline and walking at about 3 mph.

ArtsyGirl 09-05-2006 04:48 PM

Hi guys-My walk was cut short this morning and I only logged in 2 miles. My walking partner and I ran a 5K yesterday and her knee was flaring up this morning.

2 cool things from the holiday weekend:

I ran a mile race and hit exactly an 8 minute mile (I have NEVER run that fast!)

I ran the 5K in 28:04. That is a personal best for me, and it was a cross country course which I'm always slower on!!!! HAPPY ME!

Anyways,

September goal - 90 miles
Miles walked - 14 miles
Miles to go - 76 miles

Its great to see so many walkers around this month.

adragonfly 09-05-2006 08:18 PM

Hey guys, I'm going to leave the challenge because I've decided I want to start turbo jamming instead..good luck to you all and I hope you all reach your goals!

sassybiscuit 09-10-2006 06:46 PM

I'm a tad late, but I wanna join ya'll! I, unfortunatly, took the summer off. WHOOPS! Well, I'm back and kinda motivated. We'll just have to see where I end up!

I'll make my goal 42 miles since there are 21 days left of September.

macdeez 09-10-2006 10:30 PM

Ok, I'm back... again. Fell WAY off the wagon and gained back a few lbs. NOT happy about it! So back into routine, I go. :^: It's a must, really. DH and I have slowed down our activity level in the last few months and have both seen a gain in weight... loss in esteem. :( We gotta get movin' though, got the 5k Run for the Cure to do in a few weeks! :running:

So you're stuck with me, ladies. ;)

My goal this month isn't nearly as high as it's been in the past, but we'll see how it goes. I'm walking DD to/from school and dance class three times a week so I might find that I rack up the miles quite quickly and then exceed my target.

Hope you're all keeping well. Sounds like everyone is off to a wonderful start this month! Keep up the amazing work, ladies! :coach:

Teachergrrl 09-10-2006 11:31 PM

I love this! I'm going to say 50. I'm currently walking two miles a day, so that means I have to rev it up to three.

Wow....50 miles sounds like a whole lot.

Genesis 09-11-2006 10:25 AM

September goal = 180 miles
Miles walked = 42
Miles to go = 138

Kokomo 09-11-2006 03:05 PM

miles to go - 58

Wow! Welcome to everyone who has just found this thread.

Macdeez-good to see you back! I also slacked off this summer with my eating program. Hope we can help each other get back to where we were.

WannaLose13 09-12-2006 01:54 PM

Alright I am going to join in the September challenge as well. My goal for the month is going to be 20 miles, since I already do about 2 - 3 miles a week that should be an acheivable goal for me.

Jen

Genesis 09-12-2006 04:32 PM

September goal = 180 miles
Miles walked = 54
Miles to go = 126

Man oh man am I behind schedule. Here's my plan for the rest of the week....

Wednesday - 12 miles
Thursday - 4 miles
Friday - 20 miles

We'll see if I can pull that schedule off. If so, I'll be on track to make goal for the month. If not, I'll have some more catching up to do in order to make goal!!!!!

Tejas 09-13-2006 12:22 AM

I'm wondering if there are any equivalents for walking. SO, if you do 30 minutes on the elliptical or something like that, do you count it as walking? Or, is walking, walking.

Thanks,

Kokomo 09-13-2006 03:14 AM

Tejes I wouldn't count the elliptical as walking because you are not lifting your feet. Elliptical is more like gliding and not considered as good as walking. If there is some reason that you can't walk, I still think it is better than doing nothing. When I went to a trainer for a while he was totally against ellipitcal or ski machines, or glider for the reason that you are not lifting your feet at all so it is easier than walking and he didn't consider it exercise. The X-Weighted Trainer on tv doesn't like those machines either. Now I have tried both and feel that there is some effort put into it so I consider it exercise. I know I put more effort in to my walking out doors than I do on any machine. Well that's my two cents lol. Does your machine tell you how many miles you have gone? If so I would think you could count it.

Sept. 11~5 k
Sept. 12~12 k

111 km/200 km=124.7 miles

ArtsyGirl 09-13-2006 07:23 AM

I don't usually do the elliptical, but I include my running miles in with my walking. I did this because when I started, I was only running 10-15 minutes a couple of days a week. I'm now up to between 2-4 miles depending on the day. I suppose I could start seperating the total, but now its a habit.

Today I got in my 4 miles with a 2.6 mile run within.

September goal - 90
total walked - 36
left to goal - 54

WannaLose13 09-13-2006 08:41 AM

Everyone is doing great ladies! I got another mile in last night and will continue the journey! Keep up the outstanding work ladies!

Jen

Tejas 09-13-2006 11:00 AM

Thanks for the information about the elliptical. I find that it is hard on my knees...even the newer ones that are supposed to be better.

But, I am finding that pounding the pavement is also hurting one knee. The walking to the WATP DVD's doesn't cause the same problem. I'll check all this out with my podiatrist, but it's interesting...no doubt, the floor in my house is softer than the sidewalk!

bekko 09-14-2006 12:20 AM

hi! ^-^ Would it be okay if I joined you all? I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated by the thought of me committing to exercising~ I'm not sure what a good amount is to start off at...

Since I'm starting late, I thought maybe I could start with a mile a day? And maybe eventually work my way up..

My Sept. goal will be 18 miles :O I reeeeally hope I can stick with it ^-^

I did use a treadmill today for the first time in forever @-@ and lasted for a mile .. have to be honest, I didn't think I could really do much more than that xD But maybe I can squeeze some extra walks with my dog :) and enjoy the weather before it gets too cold :)

I'm 1/18 miles so far :D Cant wait to try for another tommorow ^-^

Good morning ladies!

Staying focused on getting my walk in each night! Hope that this helps with the WI tomorrow. Keep up the great work ladies!

Jen

macdeez 09-14-2006 04:15 PM

Brandy, thanks so much for the "welcome back"! Yup, we can certainly help each other get back OP! I could use all the accountability I can get at this point! :) Good job getting those miles in, you are well on your way this month!

bekko, welcome! I know that getting started with exercising can be a bit overwhelming but you chose a fabulous way to get started. Personally, I really enjoy walking (outdoors, mostly) so it doesn't seem like exercise at all. And now that we're heading into fall, the temps are perfect! Congrats on making the choice for a healthier you!

Wannalose13, good luck on your WI! Staying focussed is what this is all about! :)

Tejas, hope your podiatrist has good news for you! The WATPs videos are great! I love the walk/kick one! Good for getting your heart rate up!

Kokomo, wow! You are burnin' some major tread! WTG! :)

Genesis, you are doing fantastic, too! And great plan for the next couple days! I'm sure you'll make your goal with the attitude you have!

Anyone I might have missed, a great big  !

As for me, I've only walked an additional 4mi, but will do 2 more tonight. DD has school tomorrow so I'll be walking 2 (to and from x2 -- drop off, pick up) and 2 more in the evening. I'm still low though. Gotta get movin'! Hoping to rack up some miles this weekend (hoping the weather improves just a smidge).

Other than that, all's fine here. Hope you all have a GREAT Thursday! :)

~mel

Kokomo 09-15-2006 01:02 AM

mel I joined the Kickstart walking program in Kelowna through the Recreation Centre so I'm wearing a pedometer and count all my steps for the whole day.

Sept 13~9 k
Sept 14~17 km. Today was more steps because there was a group walk and I walked to our meeting place and back. It was a bit further away than I thought it was so the km added up. Plus I was cleaning and getting ready to go to Vancouver for the day. I'm really sore tonight lol

137 km/200 km=124.7 miles

ArtsyGirl 09-15-2006 08:30 AM

Hi everyone, I'm leaving for Kansas City today to participate in the Breast Cancer 3 day walk. I'll be back on Tuesday. Keep up the good work!!!
