I can't run, because I don't have the knees for it. Actually, I question a trainer who tells you that running is the "only" way to lose weight. There are plenty of people (like me) who are losing weight without ever running at all. Perhaps you should consider a finding trainer who is better informed and less dogmatic. However, if you really like this particular trainer, then it's important to be honest with her. Let her know that 1) you are not open to the idea of running, and 2) you'd appreciate it if she wouldn't make remarks that discourage you like that. A good trainer will work within your limitations.

I used to hate running too, barely could go for 2 minutes at a time. Now I'm training for a 10k next month and its going great! I'm not huffing and puffing anymore and my speed has increased dramatically. There are some really important things that I've learned that might help you get into it if you want to:

-Start with a walk/jog program like the couch to 5k or 10k
-Don't run too fast! This is huuuuge. It should be comfortable even if it's almost walking, you can (and will ) pick up speed later.
-Make sure you have the right shoes/clothing. I like my yoga pants, they're tight so it's like a butt-bra lol.
-Drink water before you go, you won't believe how much difference it makes to be hydrated.
-Be consistent, you only need 3 sessions a week, and if you miss one or two get back on it right away!

hope it helps, but running's not the only way to lose weight, don't worry.

I highly doubt that the only way to lose weight is to run. I've lost about 5 pounds a month through changing my eating habits and walking.

I do however want to be a jogger. Right now I can jog for about a half a mile and even then I feel like I'm going to plop to the ground due to exhaustion at any minute.

But I'm sticking with it and I have made progress...especially since I've lost some weight...it's a wee bit easier.

Right now I'm really gung-ho about it. I told myself that when I got to 140 I wanted to start hauling butt. So I'm slowly but surely training myself more diligently in jogging. I don't think it's going to be easy in a month...but I know one day I'll be able to go go go!

The main reason I want to do it is because it just screams health to me. I've always admired those people that could jog or run without being pooped in 30 seconds. It's really going to boost my physical self-esteem even more when I can do it for longer distances.

I just want to look hot and I want to do the thing I thought I couldn't do before.
