Walking of the excess weight

:welcome: to Walking of the Excess Weight.

I have taken the liberty to start up this thread for those that are using 'walking' as their form of exercise.

All are welcome to come and post how they are doing with their walking.

Keep a record here of the time you spend daily / weekly walking and / or the miles you have walked or maybe just the steps recorded per day or week. Decide what is the best way for you to record your 'movement.'

So a new month is about to start - for those that would like to set a goal for the month of March - please do so and then keep us informed on how you are doing.

:coach: now let's all get up and start moving and groven

buddha belly 02-28-2006 01:20 AM

I could stand this. I do keep track but some accountability might get me to the gym a bit more. I have a goal to burn 100,000 calories walking (that would be 28 lbs, but I would settle, (I would be ecstatic) for a 20 lb weight loss from it). I usually walk for an hour on the treadmill and burn about 515 calories a session. Hoping to increase that by increasing speed/incline. Been trying to raise it the past few weeks but my heart rate starts to go up too high, so right now I seem to pretty much be able to do 3.9 mph at a 6% incline.

For March, I would like to burn a minimum of 11,000 calories.

sprout 02-28-2006 01:42 AM

Hi Budda

Was just going to head off to bed but thought I would have a look and low and behold you had posted.

Sounds like you have a good plan there - knowng what you would like to do for March.

Myself I am going to be just plain old walking. I have the walk away the pounds tape which my daughter just loves, plus I have some CD's that are made for walking - actually they are Scripture based and when you walk to one of them - about 50 minutes - you really feel the workout. Plus I have in the past gone to our rec plex (concourse at the hockey rink) and walked. I have a friend that wants to start walking there - so will be going in the morning with her.

For March I am looking at starting at 30 minutes a day - and this will give me 1/2 a mile (did it on Friday in that time) and am going to be working to get up to walking for 60 minutes a day. I am wanting to get the 1/2 mile up to 1 mile within 30 minutes - with time it will come. With March having 31 days I am aiming for 15 - 31 miles to be walked. Going to give it a good push to make it to 31 miles.

And of course with this walking comes the drinking of lots of water - 8 glasses per day min.

NemesisClaws 02-28-2006 03:33 AM

Hey! I so need to get myself moving more. I've been down with a nasty case of the cold. :(

I've been trying to walk 3 times a week for 30 mins, and then recording it into my calendar so that I can see my progress. I don't have a specific calorie goal here. Any pound lost is a smile on my face!

I have been, when housebound, working out to Denise Austin's DVD for indoor walking. My only complaint with that is that it's only 15 mins per session, so oftentimes I have to try to keep walking or else repeat the session again. So I usually keep walking and turn to the country music channel for music. Usually does the trick. :)

My goal is to up my walking from 30 mins to an hour, so hopefully I can do that tomorrow with a new route I have in mind.

Fat in Hong Kong 02-28-2006 04:55 AM

I'd like to join you too if that's ok:) I will warn you however that I've been a bit of a failure lately, both with my dieting and exercise:( Just haven't been able to get motivated. I always start off well, but after a week or two I lose my motivation to carry on ... now I realise that we're about to start the third month of the year and I'm still in the same position that I was in when the year started!

I recently joined a challenge thread thinking that it would help to keep me motivated ... all the other ladies on there were really enthusiastic and doing so well, I simply couldn't keep up with them and it made me feel like a failure when I didn't do as well as them ... it made me feel under too much pressure to compete ... and I don't want to have to compete with others ... I simpy need to do it at my own pace. Does that make sense?

Anyway, this thead sounds like a good place for me to come without feeling under pressure to compete with anyone else ... just start off at my own pace and slowly build up. I plan to simply walk for exercise and gradually increase my speed/distance.

Due to my husband being on medication for high blood pressure, and the fact that I have a family history of high blood pressure, we have both just started to follow an eating plan to help him lower his, and hopefully to prevent me from getting it.

So, I'm just starting a new healthy eating plan, and tomorrow is the start of a new month when I plan to seriously get into walking ... without any pressure.

I look forward to coming here regularly to both give and receive encouragement and support.

Organicgirl 02-28-2006 10:45 AM

I love this thread! I walk 3 miles everyday and I'm going to increase it to 3.5 miles soon.

sprout 02-28-2006 11:18 AM

Good morning everyone

 :write: Thought I would come here and check in before my day gets too busy.

My daughter Priscilla is about to go out with her support worker for a few hours (Priscilla has Down Syndrome).

When she leave hubby and I are heading out to the Rec Plex (concourse around the hockey rink) and are going to walk with a friend. I have been only able to do 1/2 mile last Thursday and Friday but am going to see if I an up that to 3/4 - 1 mile today. Then this afternoon I plan to do the Walk Away the Pounds Tape 1 mile and later this evening before getting comfy in from of the TV I am planning on putting on a CD of music - Scripture verses song to be used as a workout. Would like to to 10 - 15 minutes of those.

Eating: Need to watch portion control in this area. Have had an attacked of IBS the last few days so have to keep everything light right now until things settle down - which means chicken noodle soup, jello and milk pudding mostly.
I am going to work on getting in 4 bottles of water today.

We are having funny weather - snowed end of last week, then started to rain on the weekend. It rained most of yesterday and then froze last night - hubby says it is terrible outside - our driveway is like a skating rink so it is going to be interesting to get Priscilla out of the house.

organicegirl - 3 miles each day - looking forward to being able to do that myself

Fat in Hong Kong - please don't feel like a failure - don't feel pressured. Just do what you can each day - taking it one day at a time. And come and post often

NemesisClause - good plan for walking 3 times per week. The tapes will help - I didn't realize she had any out for walking. The Walk Away the Pounds Tape by Leslie Sansome are great - she has 1, 2, 3 and 4 mile walk with the 1 mile one done in 15 minutes. I have the 1, 2 and 3 all on one CD - and at this time I usually only do the 1 mile walk - but even just walking to the music on the radio or any CD would be good.

Well, should run :D and see what I can get done before my walking.

Organicgirl 02-28-2006 03:04 PM

Sprout..are you ever at the WW site?

aschenbrodel 02-28-2006 03:58 PM

Hi, I'd like to add my 2 cents too! I plan to walk 6x a week for 30 minutes each day. I'm doing pretty good but it's amazing how many excuses I can come up with not to do it!! LOL

I have the treadmill turned towards the TV, hubby just bought a HUGE 50 inch HDTV and that got me thinking!! I love travel shows and on that huge screen it makes you feel like you are there!
So I just ordered a whole bunch of travel DVD's, like Rick Steves and others from the library!!

Lots of SUNNY places like Kauai, Bora bora, Italy etc.
Now when I walk I'll be able to dream and plan a vacation!! or just dream, lol!

Organicgirl 02-28-2006 04:20 PM

So what you are saying is...you are acting like you are walking in these places as you watch it on tv?

Cool!!!!....:)

sprout 02-28-2006 06:29 PM

Checking in after walking

Well I got in one of my walks today - about 10 am went for a walk with hubby and a friend. Did 1/2 mile in 30 minutes and then we had to run and do some chores - but I got in the 1/2 mile.

So my walking now looks like this from my starting date:
Feb 23 2006 start date: 1 1/2 miles completed to date

Not much so you can see I really have to work on this. We are about to have supper - an early one - and then around 6 pm I will be doing the Walk Away the Pounds 1 mile tape - need to get my daughter more into moving also. So am looking at having my total miles increased before going to bed tonight.

Water wise: doing good so far - 2 bottles (4 glasses) so far.

Organicgirl: Haven't been at the WW site - would love to be able to afford to go to their meetings but we are about to be going on pension so the cost of attending meetings is just out of our budget at this time. Doctor recommends their food plan though - need to look into it more and see if I can get enough info to follow it at home without the meetings. Just all the 'handouts' when you start that are so good to get.

aschenbrodel - sounds interesting to do the walking while watching travel videos - let the imagine go while and think you are actually walking there.

I have started enjoying putting in CD's and walking to them - getting some of all the 'oldies but goodies' out and walk and sing along. Daughter laughs when I do this but she is laughing and singing even louder - really funny to hear her.

Well goal is to walk 31 miles - have gotten 1 1/2 down so that leaves me 29 1/2 miles to go :dizzy:

Got to 'run' supper is just about ready and need to set the table!!

fatbottomgirl 02-28-2006 08:27 PM

I'm all ready to go for March.i'm going to pledge to walk 50 miles with leslie sansone in the month of march i will record it here weekly.

Misti in Seattle 02-28-2006 08:32 PM

Aschenbrodel, what a fantastic idea about the travel walking!!! Now you can travel the world!!

And fatbottomgirl... you keep up that walking and soon you will have to "rename" yourself to FLATbottomgirl!!!!

Giasbash6260 02-28-2006 08:45 PM

WoW, I found a site that suits me perfectly! Every day I rise at 4:57am to jump on the tredmil for a good 90 min. and then by the end of the day I accumulate 20,000 steps which is the equilivant of 10 miles! I am an avid walker and never take a day of rest, I know some may think this is over kill, but it works so well for me. I have so much energy to tackle everyday obsticles and I sleep pretty well every night. The only struggle in my day is those first ten - twenty minutes on the tredmil because my body has not quite adjusted to.....being awake, but after my 90 minutes, I feel fantastic! I would reccomend waking up and tackling your walking routine before the day starts(even if it is only 20 min) because after you feel so much better about yourself and are filled with a lot of confidence! But I am not forcing you, as long as you get some excersice thats FINE!!!!

aschenbrodel 02-28-2006 08:51 PM

Ha! My morning mood is "If you get in the way of my coffee I WILL kill you."
So, I like my 3pm time best lol!

buddha belly 02-28-2006 09:21 PM

Hi FatBottom - good to see you here.

Gigi is sure right about how you feel after a long session on the treadmill. I don't do it in the AM - cause my treadmills at the gym, and I really don't make it to work on time as it is. But I do feel so good, energetic, and better mood, and like I accomplished something when I am done. And I feel thinner, even though I'm not.

Today I only got 51 minutes in, cause your really only supposed to stay on a machine for 30 minutes and there were people waiting (and not even an elliptical to be found free). I got scared of getting caught, lol. No way could I have gone that distance and calories in less than 30 minutes (not at the speed I was travelling anyway).

Fat in Hong Kong - don't get discouraged. One of your goals can be to have less bad days than the month before. I know I was naughty like 11 days in February, so I hope to be better in March. I think once you start recording things, then you have something to do better with - from your own stats and not someone elses. Then when you look back at the end of the year - you can see how far you've come.

Organicgirl 02-28-2006 10:54 PM

Wow! Gigi! You go girl! There is nothing wrong with being active everyday..I heard Denise Austin say she was active everyday too.

You are my hero..:P

Fat in Hong Kong 03-01-2006 02:02 AM

Well, it certainly looks like this is going to be a very popular thread!:)

Sprout and Buddha belly ... I already feel a lot happier about starting my walking ... with no pressure! This month I'm not going to commit myself to a certain amount of days per week, or a certain amount of miles ... basically because I don't really know what I'm capable of over the period of a month ... I've never kept it up for that long before!:o But I do like Buddha's suggestion about having less 'bad' days than the previous month ... or to put it another way, more 'good' days.:D

I'll keep a record this month of what I manage to do, and then my plan will be to do better next month, and so on.

Misti in Seattle 03-01-2006 02:18 AM

When I was walking before I was trying to get 10,000 steps every day. But there were some days when it was hard to get in that much walking so this time I am not putting "pressure" on myself to get a set amount but rather just to get out there and walk!!! Today I completed my first 100,000 so it was a neat day for me!!

Fat in Hong Kong 03-01-2006 02:28 AM

Congratulations Dance4joy!:bravo: Now for the next 100,000!:carrot:

lumifan4ever 03-01-2006 09:30 AM

I set a goal last month of 30 miles, but sadly I did not complete it. Of course, we only had 28 days in the month and i started about a week into the month. and then with the rainy days.....well, it just didn't happen. so this month i am sticking with the same goal and hoping to go over it some. I also am adding in jogging to my goal. i was to jog at least 10 miles of the 30 that i set for walking. and if i get more than 30 miles walking....that would be cool. i have set different goals for this month. i set a goal to do 1000 crunches also and 1000 sumu lunges and to add stretching into my evening before i go to bed so i can try to get my legs to be more limber and less stiff. i made a chart to check off each day i do my daily quota. hopefully, i will complete it. :)

sprout 03-01-2006 11:04 AM

Good morning everyone

Am about to go and do my walking - just waiting for hubby to come back home.

Anyway, read all the posts this morning - seems everyone is on track to where they are planning on going.

I enjoy reading all the posts and looking at the avator / picture everyone has for themselves.

luminfan4ever - is your picture of you and your significant other. Very nice - don't tell me that you are still at the wait that shows on your ticker - you look very trim and fit - how I would like to look - but then you are considerably younger than I am - so I guess I should just dream a little right:dizzy: I am sure I can get back to being trim and fit but young looking - not a chance at my age :D

Anyway will come back and update my walking after I have done it - have a good day everyone

lumifan4ever 03-01-2006 01:21 PM

hey sprout. don't i wish that was me. that is my favorite couple from days of our lives. they play lucas and sami, which is where i get my screen name from. smoosh lucas and sami together and you get lumi. and i am a fan of their's forever so you get lumifan4ever. that is my goal, to look like her and get a man like him. ;)

jtammy 03-01-2006 10:22 PM

Hi Everybody,

I also walk for exercise. I use the Walk Away the Pounds tapes. I'm like Gigi in that I like to do my walking first thing in the morning, but unlike Gigi I can only hold out for about 45 minutes - on the 3 Mile Express tape. :) When the weather is nice and as the days get longer, I can occasionally walk outside, but I love the convenience of being able to do it early in the morning, at night it I need to, and regardless of what the weather is like.

aschenbrodel, I love the idea of watching the travel videos while walking. I'm going to have to "borrow" your idea. ;)

dance4joy, I try to remember and put my pedometer on when I leave the house each morning. I usually just reset it, I've never thought about keeping up with my daily totals. That would be a good way to challenge myself by aiming for a nice big number, like the 100,000 goal you just hit.

Sprout, thanks for starting this thread. I look forward to joining in.

Misti in Seattle 03-01-2006 10:39 PM

Hi Tammy

This was the first time I have ever kept track of totals too and it is kind of fun. Besides, I started a challenge thread where several of us are trying to walk a million steps so I need to keep track!!

What a day!

After my post this morning, got on my runners, we all got into the van - including our 14 month old pup (no harness as he was going to wait in the van) and headed out - got just far enough away from home - and 'crash' - we hear a terrible noise - hubby pulls over - and the front left hand tire had completely come off - it was headed from front door to front door rather then engine to trunk if you can get the picture. Had to leave it there and hike hope carrying the pup - not nice. Ordered a tow truck (it is now 10 am) but it did not show up till 3:30 as they were busy, mean while hubby had to go to work. Called the mechanic after they had the van there for about 1/2 hour and he said they were working on it and it would be ready tomorrow - praise the Lord - and the cost would be just under $300.00 - :^: not something we were planning on spendng money at this time.

Anyway my walk with my friend did not happen - and I am not going to record miles ect for today as I feel it was a 'wasted day' in that respect.

Tomorrow morning my friend said she would come and get me so that I could walk with her - I have my walking tape out and ready but after this with the vehicle just did not feel up to doing it - I know I know need to do it anyway.

Tomorrow will be better

Misti in Seattle 03-01-2006 10:53 PM

((((Sprout)))) Yike what a day for you! I am thankful you are okay and yes it is definitely understandable that you did not get in your walking today!!!! Hope tomorrow goes better for you!!

Dance

buddha belly 03-01-2006 10:55 PM

Whoa, so sorry to hear about your bad truck repair, sprout. How far do you think the walk home was? Don't wanna count that?

Aren't those pedometers fun, Dance. I got one at the beginning of Feb. but it broke down in two weeks. Gotta try and find the receipt so I can take it back. I know it was causing me to walk more though.

Well today I did my hour on the treadmill and went 3.8 miles and burned 520 cals.

Misti in Seattle 03-01-2006 11:00 PM

Yah I love the pedometer too, although I dropped mine today and broke it!! It seems to be counting steps though as long as I rubber band it together LOL. I need to find the thread where someone was telling what kind they had that they liked; I have not been happy with mine because I have had to replace it so often, and not just because I broke it in half LOL.

That's great that you went 3.8 miles!! Good job!!!!! Bye bye calories!!!

buddha belly 03-02-2006 12:00 AM

I was reading that thread too Dancer, it is in this section further down. Something like the Omron HJ 112 - don't hold that for truth though.

Fat in Hong Kong 03-02-2006 01:00 AM

Sprout, I was thinking the same thing as Buddha ... surely the hike home AND carrying a 14 month old pup counts for something towards your exercise:)

I'm afraid I didn't manage to walk yesterday ... not making any excuses though, there was a genuine reason! My teenage son was sent home from school with pains in his stomach, which moved to his side, then to his back ... by the time I got home from work the pain had become so bad that I ended up taking him to hospital, where upon our arrival the pains disappeared!! ... but they did return again as a dull ache. Thankfully though, after tests/x-ray it turned out to be nothing serious.

I've just come home from work and feel exhausted, but I know I have to make a move and get out there to do some walking ... even if it's only to walk the dog for 15mins, it's a start, right?

Checkin in for today

Have our van back - not as much money as we thought - but the mechanic said there is lots to be fixed - about $1,000 would get it up to better state - so will see about doing that when the income tax comes in.

Did not count the walking yesterday but will be doing some today. Am hoping to go to the Rec Plex today for 1 mile walk and then will do the WATPS CD - will come back later to give an update on how many miles I have walked and how many more to go

buddha belly 03-02-2006 09:47 PM

Glad to hear the repairs weren't as expensive as you thought, Sprout. At least you have some time to save up for the rest of them.

I did an hour on the treadmill, same stats as yesterday so I have a total for the month of 7.6 miles and 1,040 calories. Will be taking tomorrow off, since I have to work all day and the gym closes at 5:00. Ahhh, what a shame.

How is everyone else doing?

Fat in Hong Kong 03-02-2006 11:46 PM

Sprout, glad to hear you got your van sorted!

I managed a 20mins walk yesterday with the dog, so I've finally made a start! Unfortunately, I'm off work today ill ... came down with flu-like symptoms last night and feel awful!:( Hopefully it will be one of these 24hr/48hr bugs and I'll be ok in a day or two.

Fat in Hong Kong 03-03-2006 12:11 AM

Forgot to mention ... weighed-in this morning and I'm 2lbs down ... but that's the 2lbs that I regained last week so doesn't really count!:o But at least I'm back on track.:)

swarmina 03-03-2006 12:25 AM

can I join in?

I would love to join you ladies. I have just started to journey in a determined manner to lose weight and get healthier. I have several things that I am using to help motivate myself. I am 46 with ten and two year old daughters. I have got to get things under better control or they are gonna have a granny for a mom--they actually kind of already are getting that. The other night I was rocking the baby to sleep and was short of breath singing! I have known for a long time that my weight is an issue, but haven't weighed myself until coming upon this site. I did that tonight and found that I weigh the same that I did just about to deliver my youngest two years ago! That was a bit shocking. Also my older daughter told me that it would embarrass her if I came to an assembly at her school--just about broke my heart. I'm not sure what the reason behind that, but I wonder sometimes if my poor physical condition is something they are embarrassed about...? :( I am going to my sister's wedding in April and I want to be in a little better shape too. I feel like I am literally looking like a sack of potatoes right now. Lastly, I just want to be healthier for me, to feel better and to be a good role model for my girls. It is hard enough to see changes in my body as I age, without adding the additional burden of overweight. I do have an element of depression that I know this will help! :) Just this past two days I have been outside in the garden with my youngest, working. I have taken our dogs walking three times. I ordered a pedometer too. I am already much happier in general.
So that is it...here I am. I hope this is an OK place to blather all that stuff.
So goals-
:carrot: walk several times per day
:carrot: stop eating so much, eat healthy foods and not junky carbs
:carrot: get out of this rut and live instead of just hiding
Thanks for all your inspiring posts!

sprout 03-03-2006 06:11 PM

Checkin in

Was able to get out to the Rec Plex today to walk - friend picked me up as hubby was to go to work.

So my walking stats now look like this
Jan 2006 = 9 1/2 miles
Feb 2006 = 1 1/2 miles
Mar 2006 = 1/2 miles
Total todate: 11 1/2 miles

Goal for now it to get to 30 miles so getting there.

Van broked down - again - today - looks like the starter - so will be taking it in on Tuesday gettng that fixed and then sometime next week hopefully it will go in for all repairs costing us up to $1,000 - not what I want at this time - but better now then right after hubby retires.

Can't wait to sell the house and buy a new vehicle!! - Then we will have the problem of 'where do we live' - can't win for losing right

Misti in Seattle 03-04-2006 12:32 AM

Sprout if that van keeps breaking down you are going to be sooooooooo skinny from all that walking LOL. Hope you can get it fixed up soon though as I know it is a frustration.

buddha belly 03-04-2006 06:12 PM

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Walked 1 hour on the treadmill, 3.85 miles and 535 calories today.
