Checking in

Got some walking in today. Not able to get to the Rec Plex but put on some nice Scripture music and walked for 15 minutes - 30 minutes should add up to 1 mile but just added it today as 15 minutes - will add to the miles for every 30 minutes.

The music is from 3 CD's I have from the First Place Program - really nice beat to the music and hearing the word really helps.

So my chart now looks like this for weight/walking (am slowly getting back into it but better slow than not at all)

Weight / Walking Chart
For 2006

Date Current Weight +/ - WATPS RecPlex To Music Total miles walked
Jan 1/06 296.4
Jan 31/06 294.9 - 1.5 9 ½ miles 9 ½ miles

Feb 1/06 294.9
Feb 28/06 297.7 + 1.3 1 ½ miles 11 miles

March 1/06 298 + 1.6
March 3/06 296.4 ½ mile 11 ½ miles
March 4/06 295.4 - 1 15 minutes

danceforjoy - sure wish it would work like that - no van get skinny - but doesn't seem to work that way for me - but it is making me use my Scripture Music and the WATPS cd more -

buddabelly - good job on getting in time on the treadmill - you go girl

swarmina - :welcome3: do what you can each day for walking and come and post as often as you can - the more the better

fatinhongkong - good job on that weight loss - feels good doesn't it

My goal: 30 miles walked - not giving it a date just I want to reach 30 miles.

May 31: will be 12 weeks on my First Place Program - am aiming for 15 - 20 pounds to be released and anything more than that will be a bonus

I need to get my CD player out and get some great Scripture music out too! I have some neat walking and exercise ones... some neat stuff by Randy Stonehill. Are you familiar with his song, "Great Big Stupid World?" It is hilarious and also a song about pigging out and how they won't have to embalm us because of all the preservatives, etc. He is hysterical and I love his music!!

cathyxxx 03-04-2006 07:41 PM

hey gang - is this the March walking thread?
if so I walked 3 miles this morning :carrot:

sprout 03-04-2006 08:13 PM

Wrong thread

Cathy, think you are looking for the thread for walkers that changes each month - new month, new thread.

You are more than welcome here - we just continue from one month to the next on this thread.

Ready2BThinna 03-05-2006 01:42 AM

Hey Wonderful Walkers . . .

. . . glad to see this thread. I used to visit here many months ago. I've been back to a walking routine, using the WATP CDs - Leslie Sansone (love 'em!) and just started lifting weights regularly a few weeks ago (love 'em too!).

I try to do at least a mile of cardio before working out with weights, along with an additional mile or two at some point in the day - just to keep moving.

Sheila, I feel like I could have written your post! I am 49 and also had a shocker a few months ago when I realized EXACTLY how much weight I had gained in the past few years. Isn't it great that we can do something about it!:carrot:

I, too, have suffered the Big "D," currently proceeding through the Big "M" and can vouch for the great results gained from being outdoors and keeping active. It definitely has an effect on our endorphins. What also helped me was cutting down on sugar, processed foods and snacking. I did each gradually. If I try to make huge leaps, I become overwhelmed and give up.

Glad to see everyone walking away those pounds and getting fit!

Jean

Today, I did 1 hour on the regular treadmill, and a 5 minute gluteal program with 5 minute cool down. I walked 4.25 miles and burned 580 calories. The treadmills were pretty free, so I used the opportunity, and I also joined the 100 mile walking thread, so think I will try and get a bit extra in when opportunity presents. Yes, I am becoming a challenge thread ho.

Moo :) 03-06-2006 01:38 PM

I broke my ankle @ the end of September :( :( and missed out on walking until the begining of January, when I had to start again due to lack of funds for taxi's (I work in an area where the buses are great if you work 8 til 4 but anything outside those hours its feet/car/bike/taxi). Its a 4 mile walk to work and a 4 mile walk home, but I'm loving it. Its so nice to be out in the fresh air again with my headphones on. My ankle gets a bit sore somedays, so I have to slow down again, but I feel so good when I get to work/home. :carrot:

I've even got the energy to get on the exercise bike as well and do 15/20 miles.

Walking is something I'll never ever take for granted again.

Ready2BThinna 03-07-2006 12:39 AM

Moo-ving reflection!

Moo,

Sorry to hear about your ankle and glad it's on the mend. Thanks for posting such a positive message. Whenever I begin the self-talk and whine about having to keep up the cardio, something humbles me and brings on a feeling of gratitude. Your post did that for me today.

I needed a reminder not to take my ability to walk for granted.

Many thanks,
Jean

update

have not walked in 3 days - stomach problems / stress / car problems.

But tomorrow is a new day and am planning to get back on track.

Keep up the walking everyone

Misti in Seattle 03-07-2006 08:06 PM

Hi Sprout... and

Hey we all have difficult days! You are doing just great so keep on hanging in there!!

buddha belly 03-07-2006 09:51 PM

Missed the gym yesterday - was so tired. Today I did 4.15 miles and burned 570 calories on the treadmill.

buddha belly 03-08-2006 09:50 PM

Today I did 4.5 miles and burned 520 calories. Hope things calm down for you Sprout.

Where did everyone else go?

IntriguedKI 03-08-2006 09:53 PM

I just started walking today. I did 30 mins at 3.1 and I don't even remember how many calories I burned...

buddha belly 03-08-2006 10:02 PM

Well you can keep track by miles, Intrigued. You don't have to track calories. It is just that I am trying to burn off 100,000 calories by walking, lol.

buddha belly 03-09-2006 09:51 PM

Did 1 hour on the treadmill today, 3.8 miles/535 cals. Totals for the month: 23.15 miles/3580 calories.

sprout 03-11-2006 10:05 PM

ok where is everyone?

Must say I have been missing in action myself - have been pretty much bed bound not feeling to well - but believe I am over whatever it was - so am looking at getting back on the walking pattern -

So how about the rest of you - it has been quiet in here for about 2 days - everyone taking some time away from walking?

Ready2BThinna 03-12-2006 11:26 AM

Back on track

Hey Sprout,

I've also been MIA for the last few days. Last week, I had lifted and walked through a cold - the past few days found me drained and just chillin' when I got home from work.

Yesterday, I was back in the gym. It was a great for outside walking - but catching up on errands not done during the last two weeks kept me committed until dark. I'm going to pop in a WATP tape before going out to meet friends today.

Hope everyone else is getting rid of any winter blahs (colds, aches, etc) and getting rev'd up for springtime!

:carrot:

buddha belly 03-12-2006 08:40 PM

I was around but was feeling it was kind of narcissistic to have my own thread, so I stopped posting, lol.

Anyway went to the gym everyday. I am up to a total for the month of 34.70 miles and 5,070 calories.

IntriguedKI 03-12-2006 10:32 PM

I haven't worked out none this weekend but I will be back in the gym back on the treadmill tomorrow at 3:00pm lol ;)

buddha belly 03-13-2006 10:31 PM

Walked to date this month: 39.20 miles for 5,620 calories.

buddha belly 03-15-2006 10:11 PM

Month to date: 43.70 miles/6,160 calories

sprout 03-16-2006 12:15 AM

Checkin in

Must say I am feeling somewhat embarrassed - I started this thread and then have not been posting - oops - guess I should get back into action right.

Question: For all of you that are keeping track of miles and calories burned - what device are you using to measure calories burned or is this something that shows up on a treadmill. For me I just use plan old walking - no equipment but my runners - so was wondering how you measure this.

I have decided to keep track of my walking in 2 ways:
a) walking at the RecPlex which will give me the miles after a given amount of laps.

b) walking to music and/or while watching and recording this by minutes walked. For every 30 minutes I am allowing myself 1 mile as that is what I do when walking at the Rec Plex. But I am going to be upping my walking to music more as there are days that it is difficult to get out to the recplex where with being at home I can just plane 'walk.

Also am ordering a pedometer so I can keep a record of the number of steps walked which should be interesting.

Think I asked this before but will ask again:

For those of you that are walking over 30 miles per month - how is this affecting your weight loss - are you losing every month / maintaining - would like to hear about this.

Misti in Seattle 03-16-2006 02:01 AM

Hi Sprout

Calories burned does show up on the treadmills, but it also shows on a lot of the pedometers.

buddha belly 03-16-2006 09:59 PM

Yes Sprout, the treadmill at the gym shows time, calories burned and mileage. I input my weight, and I use that cause I figure it calculates based on the mph and incline. It does help me to lose weight - not only in burning calories off, but also in reminding myself that I am trying to lose weight. And it is good for your general health and fitness. It also helps make up for when I am not so good on my diet, like when I ate a whole jar of peanut butter Tuesday and Wednesday night. (doesn't forgive me totally, but helped I am sure)

I think a pedometer is a great idea. I have bought several in the course of the last 15 years I would say, and for me about 2,000 steps is a mile - I did compare with the treadmill once. Your stride may be somewhat different, but I think they are good incentive too, to get you to take more steps in your day. I have also measured distances I was walking outside with my car to get an idea of the mileage I was walking.

Remember it is not necessary to keep track of calories burned. I am just trying to use that as motivation to keep me going longer than I went last year.

Misti in Seattle 03-17-2006 02:03 AM

Yes, I read that on average 2000 steps is one mile. That is what I use even though my pedometer will measure distance but LOL it is too complicated to try to set it
