I have had back pain for the past several years and everytime I begin working out and losing weight it helps tremendously with the pain if not eliminating it, or at least lessening the sevreity or length of time it hurts.
I have noticed that core training, & spinal erector work combined with ab work has really helped to strengthen the area so I hardly am in pain anymore.

I have a back injury and will always have some pain. But around 250 pounds, it was nearly constant. After I began exercising regularly and losing weight, I noticed the pain easing up more and more. As well as knee pain I had. I wore supports on both my knee and back when I first took up walking then running. But there came a point where I no longer needed back support, and noticed I had very few episodes of back pain.

I am 25 and around 213 lbs right now, and I also have scoliosis in my lower back. I've found that walking regularly does wonders for my back, as do yoga and pilates. Losing weight helps a lot, yes, but what helps even more is exercise. Strengthen those lower-back muscles!

One great, easy yoga series for the back is a simple Sun Salutation. You can see one at http://yoga.about.com/od/yogasequenc...alutesteps.htm .

I know this may be a bit off topic but my daughter was just diagnosed with scoliosis last year and has complained of some back pain. Are there specialists I should be seeking out or maybe she should also be doing special exercises? She is not over weight and average height for a 13 year old.

Motivated One--That depends on how severe her scoliosis is. If it's not too severe and the pain she's experiencing is more along the lines of stiffness/soreness/occasional spasms some regular back-strengthening exercises should help. Again, I recommend walking, walking, and more walking, as well as yoga and pilates.

If her pain is serious, or gets worse over time, you might want to look into physical therapy. But again, I don't know what physical therapy would do that other exercises couldn't (besides make an appointment she's perhaps more likely to keep).

Build the supporting muscles. Start there, and see what results she gets.

But I am not a doctor or physical therapist. Ask her doctor if exercise would be appropriate. However, I don't see how walking, yoga, or pilates could be bad for her, since all three can be adapted to her ability level. If it hurts, either modify your technique or don't do it. But that's just my two cents...

Thank you for the advice! I am going to have her walk with me (great incentive for me!) and see if it eases up for her. If not I will call the physical therapist

thanks again~!
