Default Strange Pain when I'm running...

I've been trying to build up stamina etc. through running, and it was going well until I started having swelling/pain in my hands.

Has anyone else had this?

The pain normally goes away an hour or two after I finish my run. I try not to hold my hands in fists, or tense them up, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I often end up putting my hands up over my head for a few minutes, while running (which I'm sure looks ridiculous) to try and make the swelling/tingling/pain go away (which kind of works, for as long as I hold them up).

Any ideas one what might be causing this/how to stop it?

Hmmm... I can't say that I've had this problem running, but when I visited Colorado and went hiking in the mountains (at elevations of 1100-1200 feet) I noticed that my hands were swollen by the end.

Maybe you could try compression? Like wearing tight fitting workout gloves or something? Maybe you could wrap your hands?

P.S. - I confess, I did chuckle to myself about the thought of someone running with their hands above their head!

I have never heard of this, but found this for what it's worth:

when I walk with my hands at my sides for a long period of time, I get mild swelling, like water retention or something, but when I run and my hands are moving at a 90-degree angle, I don't get that.....something for me about having my hands just hanging down that does that to me

This used to happen to me alll the time. I found that grain gives me major edema and it's worse when I exercise. Grain free, it doesn't happen anymore!

I read the info on those links, cherrypie99, they were helpful.

I think I'm going to try watching my salt intake, and hydration to see if that adjusts it. I already eat virtually grain free, so I don't think that's it.

I guess I just need to stretch my hands more and make sure my arms are at 90 degree angles while running.

When I first started out, that happened to me too. It also happened during long, speedy walks (1 hour+).

After a while, it stopped. I'm not sure why? I think for me it was probably a form issue, because my diet didn't change.

Yeah, I'm wondering if maybe that's the problem. I'm going to try and pay more attention to my arms/form and see if I can figure anything out.
