  • Well my question was answered.....SHINGLES! Yikes it is not fun the rash was not just a rash! The nerve endings are raw all over my side and back. It comes and goes no telling how long it will last it had gone too long for the meds to help ....so much for thinking the rash would get better!! Anyways if I can handle it will try and run tommarro....having withdrawls
  • Nicole good luck on your first race, it sounds fun!

I ran three miles yesterday and today. I also went horseback riding for 1.5 hrs. I'm sore!
  • My race went pretty good. There were a lot of walkers that were in big groups blocking the path. As a ridiculously slow runner, it took me over a mile to get past them. I really had a hard time with getting out of breath. I assume out due to the cold because my pacing should not have made me out of breath. And instead of my usual 1 min walk breaks as needed, it was taking 2-3 mins to get my breathing back under control. Other than that I felt great physically.
  • After a week of on again, off again, ankle stiffness and pain, I ran our local 10K Turkey Trot and emerged largely pain-free, having enjoyed this run tremendously. It rained from beginning to end, but after I settled in and found my rhythm, I found the rain to be comforting and pleasant to run in.

I had an odd and unexpected experience during the run. Right before the 4 mile marker a woman ran up beside me and asked if I was running to music. When I replied that I wasn't she seemed surprised and said that I was keep "a perfect pace". I never run with music but maybe those who do can speak to having a better defined pace than those who don't run with it Clearly a compliment, I took it with a grain of salt as I know it's all relative and I am NOT a speedy runner by ANY stretch of the imagination. She then asked if she could run alongside me. Of course--you can't really stop that, right At mile 5 we began chatting and sharing our running experiences. She introduced me to her husband who caught up with us and then passed us, and also mentioned her 62 year old mother was doing her first 10K. I made a running friend!

I tell you all this because I was not looking forward to doing this run at all. Had I made excuses and not done it, I would have missed out on the little joys and blessings this run gave to me.
  • Nikel - congrats on your race!

Curvy - what a nice compliment! Glad you did the run! I'm always glad when I make myself!

Did the 10 mile turkey tussle MOUNTAIN [forget hills!] run on Saturday and I love loved it!! Thought it was way better than the last one & the alcohol shots I'm getting for my morton's neuroma really helped I thought! The hills were unlike almost anything I've seen in a race - not sure I saw one person fully run the entirety of it but that was the only time I wasn't running. Great race - really glad I did it!
  • Nickel,Curvey, and Im...Congrads on you Turkey runs you all did great, Its so great you all got out there and sounds like you ALL accomplished more than you thought you would...WHICH we all can if we challenge ourselves!

As for me I am still resting think I will try a short run today..this shingles thing is tricky and I want to clear it up! BUT I MISS RUNNING SO BAD! At least I don't seem hungry???
  • I ran 3.6 this morn it felt great it was cold loved it have not run since last Wed. before I found out about the shingles...wore a silky shirt under a different sports bra so nothing touched old rash and nothing NEW broke out...NOW if the nerve pain in my back and shoulders would go away!!!
  • Had 3 unplanned days off of running last week, but back into it now. I ran 3 miles on Sunday and did an hour on the elliptical (3.25 miles) and 2 miles on the road last night.

I ordered an early Hanukah gift for myself- a pair of Mizunos (Wave Rider 15, purple and red). They'll be my first pair, and I'm excited to run in them.

Last night's run was COLD! I don't usually mind the cold, but I was still running in my capri tights, and my ankles got cold. I'm on the hunt for some nice fleece-lined winter running tights. Might try the C9 running tight from Target http://www.target.com/p/c9-by-champi...um_1_1&term=c9 running tight as the price is reasonable, sound like they are good for long legs, and have good reviews. Anybody have them?

I think my next race will be Dec.9, a 5K benefit for a local Temple. I ran it last year and the course is very pretty, and there're activities for my younger kids to do while dh and I and 2 of my boys run. One of my goals for 2012 was to get a sub 30 minute 5k; I've timed myself at just under, but I want an official time- hoping this is it.

    Happy running, everyone!!

Mizunos are a fantastic running shoe, provided they are the correct fit for your foot.
I dont know of any other brand whose wearers are as fiercely loyal as Mizuno runners. But, they arent good for everyone. People either love them or hate them, and if you love them, you will never run in any other shoe, i promise.
Ive been wearing Mizunos for years after having made the rounds through the other brands--> all of which left me injured and in pain.
I swear, somebody at the Mizuno factory has my exact foot. when i run in them, it is like an extension on my own leg. I dont notice them, or feel them. But i dont wear a pair with as much padding and support as the Wave Rider ( i used to wear Wave riders, but have moved on to Mizuno's psuedo-minimalist Precisions <-- my hands down, all time favorites, and my racing flats ( Ronins-- spectacular, but too expensive to carry more than one pair and too expensive to replace often)

my ONE and only beef with Mizuno is that they wear down faster than other brands, needing to be replaced much more often than some other brands.
I run approx 120-140 miles a month, and my Mizunos have to be replaced every 8-10 weeks. I cant run in them after ive logged more than 300 miles. Its not that they physically fall apart, but im left with sore aching leg muscles/calfs and my post-tibial tendonitis flares up. As soon as i replace them, i feel 100%.

I hope you enjoy them! Im assuming that youve tried them on and have a nutral gait, no pronation and pretty high arches?
  • Deva - how are you doing? My mother had shingles a few years ago and said it was the most painful thing she had ever experienced!

Just got back from 6 miles and ran it slow hoping for a good 5K time on Thursday!

    Happy Thanksgiving runners!

    Jen
  • Wow I think I missed that - Shingles?? You ok Deva? I've also heard that's insanely painful...how long does it last?
  • unknown...dealing trying not to stress my body BAD for Shingles managing can do things like Work(of course) trying to keep busy sewing ,projects ,cooking But would rather be running livingvicarouously(sp) though you all!!
  • Good luck Deva - I hope you are on the mend...

5.5 miles last night - pretty fast, slightly hilly. I have trail shoes that make me go SO much slower I feel b/c they are heavier. Last night I wore my faster shoes and I felt like I was flying...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone - remember to run off all that stuffing & pie!!
  • What brand of running shoes do you guys like the most?
  • I wear Brooks Ghost 5 I run mostly on dirt but they have good cushening for pavement also. My running store suggested them.
