June Running - Bring on the Summer Heat!

Hey ladies! Come here to get and give support of all things runners!!!!

Sorry it's late! I'm in San Diego right now, running my 2nd marathon tomorrow! Hope you all are well and I promise to catch up next week.

Happy running!

CherryPie99 06-03-2012 11:01 AM

Hi all!

Today is my 40th birthday and I'm feeling really really really depressed about it. What I wanted to do this morning was to stay in bed with the covers over my head. Instead I went for a 6 mile run. It's my longest run since surgery and I finished in 54:56.

For my b-day hubby got me a Road ID, running fanny pack that holds a really nice water bottle for when it gets hot and a kettle ball!

devadiva 06-03-2012 11:15 AM

Thanks for doing the thread Nuenco!

I ran 4 miles again today still trying to take it easy something is going on on the ouside of the back of my ankles on both feet....think its the new running shoes theyh were too flat have put in an arch support...will see if its not that its a combo of flip flop season.Try not to wear them but a girls got to be a girl sometimes!

TurboMammoth 06-03-2012 09:08 PM

How was your marathon, Nuenco?

Cherrypie, happy birthday! loved the way you just went out and run, even if you was a little down. Running is a great way to get rid of the blue! Nice gift from hubby, btw!

devadiva : i always need a few weeks to get use to flip flop too... I hope you ankled will get better soon

***

got my 18k long run training done this morning in a drizzling rain and chilly wind... got it done anyway! in 2:03:39, I was really glad of my time. I ran part of it with a collegue, so I wasn't able to control totally my pace to my own taste but I was able to sprint the last 2k... I'm testing stuff right now to when I should increasing my pace during the race

my first ever half marathon is in exactly 4 weeks... OMG!!! I'm excited!

krampus 06-04-2012 03:43 PM

Man you guys are doing great and so inspiring! I ran 2.5 miles yesterday in my new running sneakers in 23:12. Ran for 15 minutes or something pathetic as part of my warmup for Friday's weights gym session.

Today I'd like to run but it's misting and sprinkling on and off. Wah wah wah, if TurboMammoth ran for 2 hours straight in the rain I can deal!

lm3898 06-04-2012 10:26 PM

Ran 6.25 miles tonight in a little under 58 min - I slept really poorly last night and felt blah All day so I wasnt expecting much out of the run but it turned out great!!! It was cloudy and about 60 degrees which was perfect and I even added a hill that went on for 1/3 mile - totally changes my day from bad to good! Today also marks exactly two months since I finally kicked my smoking habit for good and I really have running to thank for a lot of that!

Deva - is your Achilles bothering you or like a blister type thing? Just wondering - I was having Achilles problems awhile back...

Happy birthday Cherry - you look AMAZING - and you're faster than me haha!

defenestrator 06-05-2012 08:36 AM

I'm gearing up to start a 12-week training program for my fall half-marathon! I am a very slow runner, probably because of my high weight, but I have been building up my endurance and getting a little bit faster. I used to run/walk 2-3 miles in about 14 minute miles but now I'm running 3 miles in about 11:30-12. Improvement! I am running a 5k on Father's Day and hope to be under 35 minutes. My best 5k was on St. Patty's Day and was 40:26, so that would be a big change.

I just joined a running group at this little fitness studio in my town. They do about 2.7 miles at 5:30 in the morning Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are several groups and I started with the slowest of them, but I have been chasing the leaders and that helps me get faster. The route goes up a hill and then back down again, so I feel really fast at the end, lol.

I just started using Endomondo and that's interesting. Anyone else use it?

My personal challenge is this killer hill on my long run. I've been doing the same 6.5 mile loop either Saturday or Sunday most weekends and it has a 1.2 mile-long hill in the middle of it. My goal is to run the whole thing, at a reasonable pace, without walking, by the end of the summer.

lm3898 06-05-2012 09:02 AM

Good work defenstrator - I switched to endomondo from map my run, b/c mmr is just so inaccurate...recently I've noticed endomondo to actually be SPOT ON correct, despite my original thoughts. I ran a 5k race Sat. and it was 100% as accurate as the race officials and I ran a 10k last night and went over it w/ a map and again, it was within 1/10th mile accurate so I'd say you're good w/ that one.

CherryPie99 06-05-2012 04:52 PM

5.5 miles on my lunch hour today. I ordered myself a b-day present - the Garmin Forerunner 410 - can't wait to get it. I have a Polar HRM which I really like except for the footpod which doesn't work worth a crap. This one has GPS so I can track my runs more accurately!

devadiva 06-05-2012 05:27 PM

Your going to love it! Don't know if youo track on the computer with the other but the Garmin keeps track of EVERYTHING!!! You can compare all like runs it keeps a calendar,Keeps running totals, shows elevation, spped, pace, ect ect I LOVE MINE!!!!!

IM3898: No its kinda wierd, its right behind my ankle, not at my heeland its pufffy on both feet, kinda like a sprain, but doesn't feel like one {and did not do anything}only thing is new shoes and they were flatter in the heel and archbut felt great running the first week out,it was starting to get tweeky and I added a small arch support. And now its most of the time can raise up on my toes ect. most things if its achilles you can not do????? Do not have good insurance so need to figure out on my own.

Went hiking on Monday 3.2 miles gained almost 1,000 ft. Took the dog to the lake to swim. It was a nice workout BUT NOT RUNNING good cross though....

TurboMammoth 06-05-2012 07:29 PM

lm3898 : it's when you expect the least a good run that just goes in a wonderful day!

krampus : did you finally go for a run?

defenastrator : first, i loooove your username héhé. second, best of luck on your half marathon training program :) I'm following one right now and it really helped me to improve, instead of just ''going for a run''

Cherrypie : I'm in love with Garmin. I have the forerunner 305 and I love running with it! Plus you can build in training with intervals and everything... My garmin is my new best friend forever ;-)

devadiva : hiking is not running but it still a really good workout! most of the training running program suggest cardio crosstraining to improve endurance

***

I had my interval run tonight, 8k with 3 x 1k at 11.5-11.8 km/h. It was great feeling a bit out of the comfort zone but I felt so great after completing it. Plus the weather was perfect, cloudy so not hot and with a fresh wind. That felt great! :)

ncuneo 06-05-2012 11:58 PM

Hey ladies...well...I finished marathon #2, it's was not stellar...actually it was awful. Much hillier than I anticipated and much too close to my first. I finished under 5 hours by the skin of my teeth and had to walk the last few miles but jogged it in at the finish. It was tough...thought from about mile 9 on that I would never run another...but hours later I was already planning my come back...won't be until next year though.

Gonna take some time to rest, do a few halfs lose the weight I gained during training and remember why I love running so much. Overall I'm in good spirits about all of it...some pretty low points during the race, but it was what it was and I learned a lot and know there is still a lot to learn and experiment with.

Happy running!

devadiva 06-06-2012 08:36 PM

Still taking it easy about running exercise class Tues nite ten today I did One of my CHALEAN EXTREME workout...Intervals {had forgotten it really does get your heartrate up}.
Also went back to the RUNNING store with my shoes she gave me a new pair this time I am trying...Brooks Ghost5 {I think}. Really great service the shoes I brought in were fithy and had around 60 miles or more on them! Just had hope for some advice :}

free1 06-07-2012 10:11 AM

You all are impressive...I'm a newbie but I need somewhere to post to hold myself accountable. I did 3.27 miles today outside. Struggled a little bit at the end but I'm hoping to get better. I even took almost 2 minutes off my last time.

lm3898 06-07-2012 10:23 AM

Ncunceo - CONGRATS!!! Even if the marathon didn't go your way, you still completed one which puts you in a very elite category...then you did ANOTHER which puts you in an even more elite category that 99% of people really can't do - so no matter what - well done!

Deva - that's strange w/ your injury. For a little while I was having some trouble with the area behind my ankle to just under my calf - so I stretched my achilles more before running -static stretches - and it worked for me...

Jogged to the gym last night and back .95 miles each way - I did this with a backpack though and that made it SO much harder!!! Did a bunch of sprints in my kickboxing class as well so I'd guesstimate about 2.5 - 2.75 total last night - plus my kickbox class so I'm happy. Going to try to get out tonight and run the course for my 3.5 mile Central Park race next Wed. I've found that I do a lot better during a race when I've already run the course before- I guess I know what to expect so I can talk myself through it more...

krampus 06-07-2012 10:46 AM

TurboMammoth, I ended up going to the gym Monday. I ran 15 minutes on the treadmill, 12 minutes on the elliptical, 5 more treadmill minutes.

Yesterday I went to a park and ran for 50 minutes. Not terribly quickly - probably just under 5 miles.

TurboMammoth 06-07-2012 09:16 PM

lm3898 : Knowing the course takes out a looooot of stress. Good move!

krampus : 50 minutes! that is awesome!!!

***

I logged tonight a 10k in 1hour12min35sec with a collegue. It was a bit slow, I could have go faster, but I wanted to stick with her. But hey, a 10k is still a 10k, even if it's a slower 10k!

CherryPie99 06-07-2012 09:46 PM

Ran 6 at lunch today - felt really good and made it in 54:49. My goal is to be able to run a 10K in 54 minutes by September. We'll see.

4 miles in today I realized that 4 miles was so easy for me. 1 year ago 2 miles was next to impossible!

lm3898 06-07-2012 09:54 PM

Hit 4.5 miles tonight - funny I was psyched to run and it started off pretty bad, I had to PUSH to hit the 1st mile, it got better after that - added a 1/2 mile pure uphill at mile 2.5 so that felt great- glad I got it in. I'm told it was 9 min/miles from endomondo but it might have been 1/10th mile off so prob 9:15 or 9:10 sec. miles so that's fine - no more running til my 10k on Sunday.

Good worth turbo - you said it best, a 10k is a 10k!!

Krampus 5 miles in 50 min def. not bad!

devadiva 06-08-2012 10:02 AM

Everyone is doing awesome keep on pushing on!

ME I am trying to stick to cardio and weights at home resting whatever the injury is as to not do long term damage IT IS KILLING ME!!!{not running NOT the issue} I am not sure the new shoe are going to work wore them to exercise class and for some reason it was making the bunion area by the big toe act up...and the shoe does not even push on that area???? Shoes have a really big toe box I am puzzled going to call running store and ask if they want me to run in them or bring them back first???{I am not trying running till next week}

defenestrator 06-09-2012 08:45 PM

Ran 4 miles this morning and 2.5 miles yesterday. Slept really poorly for the past few nights and I think it helped make me slower. It was really hot here, though, and that made it hard to push through.

I did a spin class this morning a couple of hours after my run. Felt pretty good. This summer I'm going to try doing a spin class directly after my morning run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We'll see how that goes.

drake3272004 06-10-2012 12:56 AM

I started my new job two weeks ago and it's kicking my butt. It has turned out to be alot more physical then I expected. So, I haven't had a chance to run in awhile. My body is battered and bruised. Really! :( I think I need to increase my iron intake.

I am going to let my body adjust to going from a mostly sedentary job to being on my feet for 8 hours. Not sure how long it will take, listening to my body. I still have the desire to run, had every intention on going the other day but started falling asleep before 8!

Happy running!!!

CherryPie99 06-10-2012 11:46 AM

8 miles this morning- longest run since surgery. I completed in 1:14:35 which is a 9:16 pace. Not bad, but I'm not sure I'll be able to run consistently under 9 minutes for my goal in September, but not bad for an old lady!

lm3898 06-10-2012 12:15 PM

10k race this morning! Was worried b.c. I had to get up so early, then race was delayed an hour w/ no food or water and very hilly course but it was wonderful!!! Finished just under 54 min so about 8:40 miles I believe - so glad I've been doing hill training - everything just felt right!

WildThings 06-10-2012 12:30 PM

I mean to join this thread every month and then for no reason never do, so this month I'm finally joining! I've been running since February, started with the C25K then have carried on from there. I do 3 miles 4-5 days a week, although today I am starting a new course in my neighborhood that makes it easy to add to my mileage. I actually think I would like to try a half marathon down the road, but I think I will hold off on that training until fall/winter when I am (hopefully) at my goal weight or at least very close.

I do have a general question about shoes. How often do most of you need to replace your shoes? Mine seriously are only lasting about 3 months right now. I have contributed some of it to my higher weight, especially when I started. I also wear my running shoes to walk everyday. I run 3 miles 4-5 days a week, walk 3 miles on my lunch breaks 5x a week, and 1-2 mile walks with my dog 6-7 days a week, so I'm putting 35-45 miles a week on them, all outside. I like getting new running shoes so it's not a huge problem to get new shoes every 3 months or so, it just seems like they should last longer.

krampus 06-11-2012 11:57 AM

Ran 3 miles up, down and around a mountain near where I live with my bf the other day. Didn't time it. We were hung over and had to walk some but it was fun! Will do again this week!

devadiva 06-11-2012 06:29 PM

Did my own triathalon today.......4mile RUN,10mile BIKE,then power CLEANED for 2hrs. Than slower cleaning rest of day..NOW out to dinner in town an hour awaay..YEAH

defenestrator 06-12-2012 09:39 PM

I'm now running routinely with a running group/team at my local fitness studio. It's really fun and seems to be helping me get faster. I have been chasing the fast ones for a short workout of around 3 miles twice a week. I run on my own the other days.

This morning, I ran about 10:30, which is a lot faster than I had been able to do previously (remember, I'm about 225lbs, which slows me down a lot, especially in this heat). I'm wondering what is possible?

Training for a half-marathon in the fall. I've been losing about 1.5 lbs a week, which would put me at less than 200 lbs by the time I run it. Also working pretty hard at training.

For people who were running and losing weight at the same time, how quick were your fitness gains? Did you get faster quickly? Seriously, last fall I couldn't run for more than a minute and now I can do 4 miles in a row and 6-7 with a few walk breaks. I ran my first 5k in 40 minutes in March. I now think I might be able to do something between 33 and 35 minutes this Sunday. I'm beginning to think it might be possible to run 8 or 9 minute miles at shorter distances by the fall.

devadiva 06-13-2012 11:11 PM

Just 4 miles taking it easy on my heels feet whatever still healing!

lm3898 06-14-2012 08:29 AM

Good idea on the personal tri Deva! I'm just about to start training for one in late August - I'm mostly just worried about the swimming - it's a sprint/mini tri - 3.1 run, 13 mile bike, 500m swim.

Glad to know your training is going well defenstrator and Cherry Pie you are CRUSHING it w/ these times/ distances - well done everyone!

Ran a race last night so my official time was 29:17 - 8:22/mile - 3.5 mile race. I'm happy w/the time but it was NOT my best run - I really had to fight myself for every step...just really tired etc.

I've been really tired and a little dizzy/vertigo since Monday so I got some blood work done & am waiting for the results - maybe anemia? We'll see - I do think that affected my run...but feeling ok so far today...

TurboMammoth 06-14-2012 09:37 AM

lm3898, weird coincidence about you talking of feeling dizzy and stuff this morning...

I haven't been posting here since last week because I had a little accident and was kind of disapointed about it and what it led to. I fainted last saturday at my friend's place (like, passing out on the floor and everything) and we don,t really know why. the two big hypothesis is iron defiency anemia or sudden low of blood sugar, we don't know. It was the first time happening to me.

So with all this, I was feeling okay after that but not top shape, so I ditched my long run training of Sunday. it was hot and honestly I wasn't feeling safe about going for a 19k run just after fainting.

I started again on tuesday, running a 8k with no interval and another one this morning. They were not the best run ever but it was the morning, I had just wake up and I did not eat before. I hope my long run will be better this weekend.

krampus 06-14-2012 09:51 AM

4 1/2 miles on the bike path yesterday. I was dragging my feet the whole way and averaged 10 minute miles.

devadiva 06-14-2012 05:42 PM

Im and Turbo: Be careful and watch yourself have it checked out could be just an inner ear thing or low blood sugar...BUT 3yrs ago New Years Eve as heading out to work the night shift I got a little dizzyh next thing I was totally in the spins state EMT came ect and said my vitals were all good but should go into to doctors {1 hr away} TO LONG TO EXPLAIN WHY WORK RELATED LIVED ON A RESORT BUSIEST NIGHT OF YR ECT ....My husband was the boss no one to take me......So I spent the evening on the couch throwing up and having the really bad spins as if I had been drinking. Went to the doctor in the am they diagnosed it as inner ear infection. Gave me something to keep from throwing up........They said it would get better over the next week or two. It did not IMPROVE at all. I kept invesigating what could be wrong saw a ENT specialist he discover a growth on my VESTIBULAR nerve. I spent 6 month feeling drnk and dizzy,I walked that way,I could not concentrate,read,watch tv.drive go to the store ect. I went to physical therapy to retrain my balance that was tottally damaged on ones side. I lived 2 hrs away so it was a 4 hr trip so I made my own PT at home.I work hrs everyday to regain it. I missed 7 months of work, occasionlly now I feel it coming on but because of my training can usually pull out. Going to certain stores,lighting,anxity lots of things can trigger it. It is still growing the tumor BUT slowly,they can remove but its close to the brain and I don't want them to trigger the dizzy thing again.....IT IS HORRIBLE TO LOSE YOUR FREEDOM I would not wish it on anyone. { I looked totally normal it was like it was all in your head!}

CherryPie99 06-14-2012 08:18 PM

Beautiful weather here today for a run! 6 miles and it felt great! But I am nowhere near my goal of 54 minutes :( 55:58

devadiva 06-15-2012 10:26 AM

Todays triathon....10k followed by 90 min massage,2hrs power shopping. Headeded out on second leg now can't wait!!!!!{one of my birthday presents from a running buddy}

defenestrator 06-15-2012 01:29 PM

It's super-hilly in my town and I had been running a few different loops, one of them a 4-miler with some impressive hills. Today my mom, who is 66 years old, and I walked it in the time it used to take me to run it.

I'm running 10:30 miles consistently unless going up hills now. It feels good.

TurboMammoth 06-16-2012 10:58 AM

devadiva : talk about a triathlon that I would like LOL!

defenestrator : when you get used to run in a hilly place, running in flatter place is soooo easy! I live in a hilly town too and I'm so much more prepared when I go to runs in other cities with people who only trained on the flat... huge advantage! ;)

***

I woke up bright and early this morning at 6AM to get my run done early, before the heat strike up. I started running around 7H15 and buy 7H45 I was already sweating. It was HOT lol

I did my last long run training for the half, 19k, in 2:10:12 (really happy about it), and I went on the actual route of the race so I can see where there's a hill and everything. Most of them are in the last 1/3 of the race. Blah.

Now official countdown begins : 14 days until the half, next week a taper 11k run in the week and in 2 week, HALF TIME!!

WildThings 06-16-2012 11:55 AM

I did 3.5 miles both Wednesday, Thursday and today, and today's run was at 10.13 minutes a mile :carrot::carrot::carrot: I know I'm not qualifying for the Olympics any time soon, but when I started in January at 230lbs, I actually had to do the first week for 3 weeks just to be able to handle the 60 seconds of running, so being so close to a ten minute mile made me very, very happy.

On the topic of hills, a few years ago I had been working up to a Thanksgiving day 5k. I had been consistently running 3 miles in a weeks leading up to the race, but I realized the day of the race just how flat where I live is compared to were my mom and dad live (which is where the race was). The hills killed me...I actually had to walk part of the race because of the hills. The hills wouldn't even look that big until half way up them when I thought I was going to need to sit down. Lesson learned...

defenestrator 06-16-2012 06:45 PM

That's pretty amazing progress, Wild Things! I started running last fall more seriously, but had to put things on hold because of weather for a while in the winter. I was about 235 lbs and am about 225 now. But you've gotten to the point I'm at now in about half the time!

It feels good to run around 10 minute miles, like I'm a real runner now, whereas before I felt so slow it seemed like less of an accomplishment. Now I'm just trying to build distance and a little speed to get ready for the half-marathon in October.
