ennay- Thanks for the info. I knew about not liftin the week of a race. I did not however know about no legs two weeks prior. I will def do that.
I'm thinking of doing another half two weeks prior to the race. I dont really care about my time for that race. The one in late april is the one I care about. If I do decide to run it I figured it would be a training run more or less and I didn't plan to treat the time leading up to it any different than I would any other long run. Is there a danger that it would impede my time and success in the race I really care about? I know some trainging programs use 10k's a few weeks prior as a training run.
I did 20 min tempo run yesterday and didnt get to lifting weights . The tempo run was on the treadmill on randomn so the incline would change from 0.0 to 2.9% I did 5 mins at 6.5mph followed by 10 at 7.0 and the remaining 5 at 6.5 again. So hard!! It was really difficult. I am hoping these kinds of training days really help me to speed up though. Like I said chasing the sub 2 hour half. I got to the gym so late though I didnt have time to lift. And since I had so little time I opted to not have a crosstraining day and instead do a tough short workout.
Felt great. Gonna to take the puppy out again today. Maybe I'll attempt some fartlecks. Never done these before. Also will have a few hills on the course I'm running. Hope to do a minimum of two miles. Maybe I'll go three or even 4 again.
What is the distance of the race you care about? A half, right?
2 weeks should be fine IF IF IF IF IF you can not get sucked into race day hype and adrenalin and crowd and truly stick to an EASY EASY pace. EASY. Like I am BORED easy. For a 2hr goal race, probably more like 10:30 ish pace.
I have discovered I have NO ability to not race a race, so even if I dont taper for it I'll run it hard, or I will start easy but by a few miles in I am adjusting my goal time down and then down again....and then down again. 10K's as a training race are different because it doesnt take very long to recover from a 10K.
Got a really nice run in this afternoon. Too fast though, going to hurt my tempo run tomorrow.
ennay- That is a good point. I have been way undertrained when I did a race in the past and ended up being content to take it easy and just focus on finishing. But this would be a new course and I would be (cross fingers) well trained up. I wont sign up just yet.
Did 2.5 miles with the puppy yesterday. A short little loop in the foothills. Had 335 feet elevation gain. (I love my garmin for being able to track this) Average pace was 9:59. So barely squeeked a sub 10. Hit the gym and lifted weights finally. I did legs so today will likely be my cross-training day I skipped earlier in the week.
There is no way I could run a half 2 weeks out from my sub-2hr try without racing! I was actually going to do a half 4 weeks out from my sub-2hr try in June, but decided I couldn't run it without trying to break 2. If I'm paying the money and getting the shirt, then I'm gonna give it all I got
Did intervals today, 1 mile warm up, 8 400s, 1 mile cool down (6 miles total). I went out way too fast on my first 4 sets. Was supposed to be running in the mid to low 9s and I was in the mid 8s...gotta figure this pacing thing out. It was a problem because my last 4 sets were a struggle and my resting interval pace wad dropping drastically. That speed also aggravated my hip...so I need to SLOW down.
Going to head to San Diego for the weekend, so I'll get to do my long run at the beach. 12 mile cutback this week. Have a great weekend everyone!
Today I completed C25k!! I can't believe I did it! Finally!!
I think I'm going to spend a few weeks just getting used to running 3 miles 3 days a week and some intervals the other days. Then in February I'll start adding a little more distance.
Ran my 5k yesterday not great time 33;30 but considering all the mishaps I dropped 54 seconds off last months it wasn't that bad! I have only been back training for 2 weeks. {had IT band issues and then a back strain{that was not running related}
During the race.....I had worn a Brand new bra that had velcro straps and yes it kept the bouce down but finally had to stop and loosen staps because it was pulling on my shoulders and neck and killing me!!! It was at its loosest .Two times my walkman fell out of the bra {I always keep it in my bra NO problem }. And I had to stop and untie {a double knot} one of my shoes at mile 1 because it had loosen up too much and was causeing me to have bad form and giving me PAIN in my ankle!.Then at about 2 1/2 miles one of the staps on the bra totally disconnects!!!! I am a 36dd so there is no running through it!SO ALL AND ALL I am happy with my time!
Next month is the 10k it is in 6 weeks so plan on working things out!!!
Today I tried to run 3 miles. I had trouble about 2miles in. I bought new running shoes on Friday, and I think my feet and legs don't like them. Both of my ankles and my left knee started to really hurt, so I stopped running for the day. This is the first time I've had any joint trouble since I started jogging.
Recommendations? I'm thinking I may just take the shoes back? Do they need to be broken in?
tdi - I do break in new running shoes - by keeping them for short easy runs, but you should not hurt in 2 miles in new shoes ever. Take them back. And great job on C25K!
Diva - great race. To take a PR under those circumstances is a fantastic achievement!
I'm hoping i have located my mojo. Made the executive decision to move my long run off the weekend and take saturdays as my rest/easy day. I have always tried to have big weekends because ...thats what you do on the weekend, but its also my only opportunity to sleep past 5 and then I dont want to run and not get back to the family until almost noon. I'll try it for a few weeks and see how either thursday or friday for my long run works. Friday works with my other workouts better, Thursday works better logistically.
Ennay- Thank you for the congrats! Also thank you for the advice. That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to make sure that I'm not crazy or not doin' it right LOL. I'm sure you'll figure out the best schedule!
I've become a runner since May 2011 and I am hooked!! My runs are my "me" time and I am a crabby bear when I can't do it!
My running and weight loss has seriously plateaued since November. I was running maybe twice a week doing 5 min run/2 min walk intervals for 60 minutes. I ate okay and the result was a great big plateau. My speed didn't get better, my interval ratio didn't improve and I stayed at 160lbs.
I signed up for a 1/4 marathon (6.5 miles) in May and it's given me the kick in the rear I needed! Since the first of the year, I'm back to the gym 4 days a week and actually have a training schedule. Today was my long run and I hit a new personal best - 3 miles total running; 1 mile run, 2 min walk (repeat for 3 miles). I had been running the first one and then needing to break the rest of it into 1/2 mile chunks. But, I did them all together. I downloaded some new music to my iTunes and I think that helped a lot. I learned that I can run a mile in a little less than 3 songs so I settled into my pace for 3 songs and before I knew it, I was good.
I stop to take a walk break because I start to feel too out of breath. I run on the treadmill and take my pulse. It was about 175 but by the 2 minutes it was back to about 135 so I get going again feeling pretty refreshed.
I think I'm becoming a bit of a bore to people in my RL because every run excites me and I want to talk about it but for non-runners, I know it gets old. I'm looking forward to coming here and sharing and learning from and with all of you!
Beachbreeze: Nice work! Sometimes we just need a swift kick to get us movin' again! LOL
I'm returning the new shoes today and then I'll be trying on a few more at a better store that carries more athletic shoes.
Today wasn't a run day, but I did some HIIT on the elliptical which went well.
Later chickies!
tdiprincess- Congrats!! That's awesome. Definitely calls for a celebration dance
ncuneo- Yeah I think I had better not run it. I'm planning in doing two others later in the summer, and since the entries add up I should probably just focus on training and not racing before the favorite race.
ennay- Yeah I make sundays a rest day and saturday an easy run day. I agree with missing family taking time to do a long run on the weekend. I work night and my husband works days so weekend mornings and afternoons are our time together. He like to go lift and do intervals on saturdays. So we go to the gym together. Then sundays we are lazy together and its glorious . I have never made the long runs on saturdays. So hopefully it hasn't hurt my race times not training long on the day of the week that I race. Good luck! Keep us updated on how you like it.
Did 4.4 miles today. Took 45 mins. So my pace was much improves over last weeks 4 miler. Ran in the foothills and had 689 feet elevation gain and so cold and windy up top! Definitely am going to be running on the stupid treadmill at the gym the rest of the week.
BeachBreeze- Welcome! Yes we love talking running here, and there are some ladies that really know their stuff and give great advice.
This is a sweet thread for sure
