Well, I have a treadmill that has two very sturdy handles that are flat and I just set a plank on top of it (actually, it's a few sheets of styrofoam duct-taped together to keep the weight low, more for the convenience of putting on/taking off, since my husband doesn't use it than for fear of hurting the treadmill).
On top of that, I place my laptop, remote controllers, sometimes a beverage, etc. The most important thing being my laptop, which I am using right now. I tend to walk at 2 mph, and I have no trouble typing at that speed. For a while, I did try running with inspiring youtube videos, but that was too far too fast for me and I found I didn't want to keep that up. I may try that again as a slower break-in in the future. But for now, my rule is that I spend at least 2 hours walking at 2 mph a day. Some days I spend a lot more time on the treadmill at various speeds. Other days, I go into work (where I stand at my desk, by choice. I only go in 2 days/week and I don't see any possibility of having a treadmill there, but I would love one there too).

Just be careful. I've heard about people getting *too* distracted and injuring themselves or dropping something that gets caught and breaks the machine.
Otherwise it sounds great! You don't even have to break a sweat to be worth it! And for me it would be great on my back, since I have pretty bad back problems and sitting all day is **** on it. Unfortunately I work in an office, so working on a treadmill isn't really feasible...

Sorry, I'm picture-challenged. Maybe when I get my new phone (current one just broke).
Dropping something on the treadmill is a risk, I suppose. I think that's why the official treadmill desks cap the speed at .5 mph. But I'm not planning on practicing my juggling skills. Usually, the trickiest think I attempt is a sip of a drink or a setting change on a remote. So far, so good!
