It depends on your definition of "in good shape." You should definitely be in good enough shape that you could walk briskly for 30 minutes straight. And if you have any injuries or other complicating conditions, definitely ask your doctor before you start running.
There are some other resources out there, like podcasts that tell you when to start and stop running.
