I worked up to my current activity level -- I certainly didn't start out that way! Part of the reason that I gained weight was because I used to be quite sedentary. I work out now because I like it, it's just what I "do". I enjoy hiking, running, kayaking, swimming and going to exercise classes. It makes me happy and it feels great. I wish I could be out doing those things all day, every day, but I have to work at a more-than-fulltime desk job, which sucks. The exercise isn't "work" to me, it's play!
Now .. when I started, it was just slightly better than torture. It took a while (quite a while) to learn to enjoy the process and for everything to get easier. But once you get to that point, then you want to do it because it's fun and feels good. Now I feel yucky when I DON'T exercise -- bloated, sluggish and depressed. When I do something, even if it is just a brisk walk, it makes me feel happy and energized. It's the best "me time" I can have.
And burning more calories lets me eat more too!

Always a bonus!
