Hi Kim, Good for you 22 miles is impressive. I know what you mean about trying to pace yourself. I constantly have to slow myself down. I've talked a couple of people in to at least trying to run a little. But I always tell them listen to your body, don't over extend yourself if you don't want an injury. Especially true for beginners like myself. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks if you are walking and jog a little then walk again. Though I've had guys come up to me and try and give advice. Anyway it looks like you know what works for you, so keep up the good work. Will you be doing alot of miles again this weekend? Today was a Tae Bo day for me and tomorrow is a running day,I've actually gotten to the point where I look forward to my running days. Please keep me informed, and we can keep our motivation high. ((In Health)) Judy

Guess what guess what guess what?!??! I ran 1.5 of my 4 miles this morning!! (( (( whoo hoo! )) ))

*laughing* The funny thing is, though, that I walk faster than I jog! LOL But it felt great to jog (it feels too weird to call it "running") three half-mile pieces in the last two miles of my workout. Now that I know I can do it without dying or breaking something vital, maybe I can pick up the pace a bit.

Last weekend was only 13.5 miles -- this weekend is 22. So I have to lay off training tomorrow, which will be tough because I feel like such a low-life slacker on the days I don't work out. But I guess that's the point, right? Letting the body get a little anxious adds motivation to the big run the next day.

Do you do tae-bo at home or at the gym? How long have you been doing all this activity?

Hi, congratulations on running 1.5 of your 4 miles!!! That is awesome. I don't run very fast either. Everyone has to start somewhere though. I wish you luck on your walking marathon this weekend. Yesterday was my Tae Bo day and today was my running day. I did my 2 miles even though I feel myself coming down with a chest cold. I started doing yoga on my 50th birthday in December, because my flexibility was going to heck. Then in February I started doing tae Bo and weights. Then the running thing I started a few weeks ago. I love how it makes me feel, so I will keep doing it. I tell you though it is harder to lose any weight when you get older, it gets discouraging after awhile. You are wise to lay off training even though it's not easy, take care, and tell me how you do this weekend, Judy

Judy, you are such an inspiration! The work you're doing with yourself makes me feel strong, too.

You know, last April, it was my friend Debi who got me into marathon walking when she confided that she wanted to walk a marathon for her 50th birthday and asked if I would train with her a little bit. So there's something magical about 50 that is not only a cause for celebration but for inspiration as well.

Our Team in Training coaches have a rule about training while sick: If it's a head cold, run; if it's below the neck, rest. Your body can't pump enough oxygen if your lungs or bronchia are compromised, and that can mean increased risk of injury to oxygen-starved muscles. I know you pay attention to what your body's telling you. Just take care, ok? I depend on good stuff from you!

I did my 22-mile walk yesterday and ran about 4 miles of it. Did the whole thing in 5 hours, 24 minutes. We walkers started an hour before the runners, and I was thrilled to come in around the same time as some of the slower runners. Even though EVERYTHING hurt (!), it was a great feeling to know that my body would have gladly gone another 4 miles for marathon distance. And three weeks from today, it'll have to!!

We won't train any higher than 22 miles before the race. From here until June 2, we'll just lengthen our daily walks and keep doing cross-training. So I've got three weeks to work on the stuff that hurts most from yesterday -- strengthen the hamstring muscles (owwie! they were REALLY screaming yesterday) and do more exercises to prevent shin burn at the beginning of the race.

Hi Kim, I hope you had a good weekend. I finally have my voice back, but still have quite a cold. Yesterday I did nothing, and I swear it's psychological but I could feel the weight start piling on again. Today I did my usual running, just not as strenuously as usual. I think it's great you trained with your friend Debi. Most of my friends think I'm crazy. They are sporting a stomach, and they seem to accept it as normal. I still think 22 miles is impressive. How long did it take you to work up to being able to walk that distance? I'm thinking of taking the kds to the gym with me, so I can use the weight room. I'm not sure yet. Well keep me posted as to your progress, and we'll keep each other motivated. You are a great inspiration and motivator for me. Keep up the good work Judy

Six grandchildren visiting?!??!? No WONDER you leapt at the chance to go out for a run!

I've eased off on running until after the marathon June 2. I jog a little here and there in my walks (6 miles today in 1:26 -- ran less than 1 mile of that), but I don't want to risk any injuries or too much stress on the knees. I've made a commitment to do only half-marathons for July - January so I can concentrate on a walk-to-run strategy and weight loss. I can't wait!

We do the 22-mile training only once in our 5-month sessions. We start out each session at about 6 miles on Saturdays and work our way up to the 22 ... up a couple miles one week, then back down a little ... spend a lot of time at around 12-16 miles. I've really picked up my speed this session -- my Disney marathon was 16.3 minutes a mile, and I'm down to an easy 15-minute mile (over 16 miles or less, anyway; things slow down a bit after mile 16).

Was yoga tough to get into? I know what you mean when you talked about the flexibility issues of middle age ... . Did you start off on your own with yoga, or did you take a class?

Hi kim, They can be a handful sometimes, but I really love taking care of them. Sometimes a friend comes and watches them so I can run, other times I have to drag them to the track with me, a crazy lady running with 3 babies in a double jogging stroller, while the other 3 play in the middle. It's good you vary your miles each time. Your marathon is coming up soon then. You'll know when and if you are ready to run, you are right not to risk injury. I am reading an interesting book about no need for speed. The author suggests just going out and doing it and not to worry about how fast you are running, its nice to know someday my speed will increase, right now I'm slow. I am always glad to hear from you, and I want to know how well your marathon comes out. As far as my yoga is concerned I got me a couple tapes, I never did take a formal class It's not too bad. Well Have a great week, talk to you soon, Judy
