Recently my daughter has givin up napping, so I've had to give up my afternoon workout. Is there any way to workout while she is awake? She can walk well so she is too old for a stroller. I carry her/walk with her to the post office every day but the walking is slow and it only takes 15 minutes tops.

Any ideas?

You can exercise with your daughter and 'call it' playing...

- do ballet squats while holding her-(simulate like she is the one jumping up and down)
- hold her in your arms while doing split leg lunges
- lift her over your head (over head press)
- hold her in front of you and twist side to side (great for the obliques)
- do ab crunches with her on your stomach (great resistance)
- any type of calistenics (let her do what you do)
- any activity that gets your heart rate up will work... tag, chase, dancing, etc

I am not sure why you think she is too old for a stroller. My little ones are 2 and 3 and when we go out to like walmart or for walks that we want to have some speed.. they are in a stroller. That stroller is adding to your workout, plus you can have the speed too.

Where I live walking isn't the safest thing (winding mountain roads with no shoulder to walk on), so for me to get in an exercise every day it means I have to do a video.. not so easy with a bunch of kids playing at your feet, so I get up early and get in my exercise before they get up.

Going out in the yard and playing is good exercise too... and fun! If you don't want to get up early then get creative... oh yeah.. dancing to the wiggles is a killer workout!

My daughter loves when I put her in the bicycle trailer. I place her in there with a sippy cup, books, and a small toy or two. She actually enjoys watching the world go by. She is 3 now and still enjoys it! Her favorite thing to say is "Faster! Faster!".......and I huff and puff........

Not anywhere too old for a stroller! I still stick my 4 year old in a stroller to really power walk. As soon as the weather turns nice out we will do walks to preschool to pick up dd, then walk to lunch, sometimes to the park and then power double stroller home in time for ds's nap (18 months). 4 miles pushing a double stroller in all.

As for the naps...just a thought...even if she has given up napping, you might want to still try to give her a "quiet time" where she lays in her bed every afternoon. Lots of kids will re-establish a nap pattern and even if they dont you still can get a little break. It can be hard for awhile if they dont want to go down, but it really pays off. dd still is required to "nap" and even though she doesnt sleep most days, she has that time where she has to entertain herself and oh lordy does her imagination run wild. Sometimes I sit outside her door listening and half busting a gut laughing. The great part is when she is overtired for some reason, she just naps then and there is no fighting the routine.

I should've said she doesn't like the stroller.

The bike idea is a great one I didn't think of! I have an infant seat on my bike, but I need to find her a helmet before I start riding her around.

Hahahaha!!! Yesterday my 3 year old woke up early while I was on my treadmill, so I had to turn my music videos off and got to run to the Wiggles instead!!!!! (He doesn't normally watch that show, but he doesn't normally get up at 6am either )

At 1, I wouldn't give her a choice about the stroller, I don't give my 3 year old a choice, she is in it and that is that. She hates to ride in it, esp when we are out shopping, but it is not negotiatable. I have a 9 year old who I let do things his way when he was that little.. now we are in therepy to try to get control of him because he thinks the world revolves around his ways... or at least he should.

You will most likely have a hard time finding her a helmet.. my first stop would be a bike shop.

it just popped into my head... maybe there is a gym there that does mommy and me classes. The one in the town next to ours does them.

I don't let her have her way all the time, I don't make her stay in a stroller because basically she's not burning any energy off that way. (She is tightly wound, never sits down.) We sorta made a learning thing out of it, picking up rocks and leaves and twigs.
Also, there are no gyms around here, can't afford one any way.

Maybe you should convince her to take back up the napping? We have nine kids in our family, and if Mom didn't get the free time in the afternoon to take care of things, our house would fall to pieces. So, anyone 6 and under takes a nap from 2-4. They aren't usually thrilled about it, but it makes them much more pleasant in the evening, and they sleep better at night because they're not so exhausted. By the time there six or seven they are old enough to read of play quietly during that time, and will be excused from the nap, unless we know ahead of time that they will need to be up late.
