I second-- or third-- I've lost count-- the elliptical machine. You may want to take a look at sporting good stores now as well. We recently purchased one of "last years" models and saved a bundle.
The pool idea is great as well. I can't swim- "I only dog paddle"-- seriously but i would tread water when I couldn't walk due to back pain. I would do it like an aerobic workout in the deep end of the pool like alternating treading water with just your arms for 5 minutes then with just your legs for 5 minutes with the goal of always keeping your chin above water. (Times are your own obviously, I don't remember what the durations were.) Sounds easy but it was really quite challenging and I liked that I could give myself a good workout with minimal pain or damage to my back.
Just my thoughts! Good luck-- if you have survived four losses such as you have, you have a reserve of strength to draw from... you can do it!
