Cool on the free stuff!!
It depends on which one gets your heart rate higher. The number of calories you burn depends on how fast your heart rate is. Your heart rate, not the kind of equipment, controls your calorie burn. For example, if your HR is 150 on the bike, 150 on an elliptical, and 150 on the treadmill, you're burning the same number of calories on all three.
So check your HR after an equal amount of time on each one and see which gives you a higher HR. Generally speaking, people burn more calories when they exercise on their feet than when sitting, but it can vary depending on the intensity that you do each exercise with.
You may find that you like one or the other better for reasons other than calories and that's fine. Because the best exercise is the one we stick with!
