I am confussed on what kind of vitamins I should be taking. I am 25 years old I am on Weight Watchers I have lost a total of 37 pounds so far I am now starting to exercise but I find that I am lacking energy. What vitamins should I be taking to help boost my energy and continue with my weight loss and exercise?
I don't think there is a consensus on vitamins but I do think that they can help bridge the gap in some deficiencies. As a young woman, you will want to take a multivitamin with iron, calcium and vitamin D. There is no one perfect vitamin but there are differences in vitamins. Some vitamins don't absorb and can just pass through the body. I buy a good vitamin from Whole Foods that I like but it was after reading many labels that I found one I was satisfied with. I know it may seem overwhelming but there are many multivitamins out there formulated for women and you can start with one and compare a couple to see what one looks good as far as recommended daily percentages.
I'm with the above posters. I take them currently - just a daily multivitamin - but usually get my nutritional needs filled through food anyway. I just like having the backup.
I DO supplement things my diet is usually missing - essential fatty acids. I don't eat many things that contain them, so I like to take a supplement to make sure I'm covered.
i just take a generic women's vitamin. but i know it's best to try and get as much nutrition from food as possible. a multivitamin is just kind of like insurance IMHO.
i just read this article about vitamins on the reader's digest website about how a lot of vitamin supplements are either useless or can actually hurt you if you take too much. the point of the article was basically, take a multivitamin, but check with your doc before taking any other supplements.
im a vegetarian and i have been taking green source megavitamins for over a decade. for me it isnt about losing weight, its just to give my body the best. times when i have run out of vitamins, i notice a big drop in my energy. my period also becomes irregular. i really like my vitamins a lot and take them every day. i should also say that it is not good to take iron supplements unless your doctor recommends it. iron can build up in your blood, and there has been some recent research that indicates that people with alzhiemers have high iron levels in their blood.
I take a good quality food-based multi-vitamin that I get at Whole Foods or a local Natural Foods Market. It's really not that much more than a generic drug store brand and my body does better with it. Until I started taking food-based vitamins, I couldn't keep vitamins down.
At 25, I think you can get away with just taking a good multi-vitamin every day. That doesn't mean generic brand of 500 vitamins at Wal Mart for 10 bucks. Most of those synthetic, isolated vitamins will just end up in your toilet and do absolutely nothing for your health.
Your right Princess0113 - practically all vitamins in tablet form or even liquids do very little. Remember they are made in labs, kindof like processed food. They are processed and heated, which causes them to loose their nutrients. Additionally tablet forms are even more processed and are made with a bonding agent to hold them together which is unhealthy. So, your money is wasted on stuff that isn't necessarily good for you. I take a nutritient that is not processed or heated, and just ground down to it's rawest state in powder form. I love it. I never get sick anymore, have more energy, my metabolism is great, my pain is gone, my mind is clearer, my headaches are gone, I sleep better and a bonus I have lost some weight. I think the weightloss though is because my body knows it's getting it's nutrients, so I am just not craving junk as much.
I would say look for vitamins or nutrients completely unprocessed or heated. Tablets and liquids are out, because that is how they are made.
roley, I, too, take a multi. At one point, I came here and ask if I was overdoing my vitties. I was. I was taking my multi, Flax seed oil, vitamin e and a fish oil. I think I'm going to look into what Sandy is doing.
