Arrow Metformin & Weight Loss

Hi there!

I recently have been told that I MIGHT have insulin resistance syndrome. This might also be the cause of my weight gain over the years.

I will tell you that I have had many blood tests over the years and I do not have ANY type diabetes. My parents and siblings do not have diabetes, but my sis did have gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with her first child.

I will tell you that aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of the family do have diabetes, and it is controled with diet, oral medication, or insulin injections.

Right now I am totally confused! Can someone help me to get some answers?

Unhappy insulin resistance

Hi Phone Card,

I do have adult onset diabetes, I'm assuming as a result of being overweight. You said that it doesn't seem to run in you immediate family. Are you overweight? And, what do you doctors say.....meaning, what is giving you the idea you might be insulin resisant?

If you haven't already, maybe you should have (or request) a fasting glucose test, which should confirm one way or another if you have diabetes and need some type of intervention. It's not fun to find out you do have diabetes, but it's better to know so you can take measures to control it. I understand the consequences of uncontrolled diabetes are not fun!!

I currently take oral meds, and with the diet I'm on now, my blood sugars have done very well, as I'm eating no sugar and nearly no carbohydrates. However, I have not really lost any weight either even after about 10 days (I just started this diet about 11 days ago). Anyway, talk with your doctor and see if you can get some definite results........it will make you feel better.

I pray all works out for you.......take care

Robin

Hi there,

Your post caught my eye.

I have recently been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. As a result of the diagnosis, I have been prescribed Metforman. I've been on it now for about 6 weeks.

Some of the benefits?
Weight loss, incresed energy levels, incresed metabolism, regulation of hormones, less sugar cravings.....
It's been instrumental in helping me lose.
I am doing WW and have been very successful....in the last few weeks alone, (since taking the metforman) I am down approximately ten more pounds.

It does take your body a while to get used to it. Don't be too far from a washroom. I did find out that you can take gravol and immodium with it as well which has helped me get used to it.

Good luck.

Angry

I just went thru a blood test where I had fasted about 15 hours - and still no sugar. I know I should be happy about that, but I am so discouraged about my weight and wonder if I am insulin resistant.

I think that the doctor might have figured it out from family history, my obesity (about 200 lbs, and problem with weight since I was 11).

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few weeks ago and prescribed Glucophage (metformin). I just started it today. Hopefully I won't have too many of the unpleasant gastro side effects. My doctor suggested I get the book on the Insulin Resistance Diet. She said that a lot of her PCOS patients have had success with that. So, armed with the Glucophage and the diet I hope the pounds start falling off very soon.
