Dieting with Diabetes #5

hi everyone. i have been gone a long time. hope everyone is doing well.
i fell off the wagon but i have resolved to climb back on and i amgoing to need some support. how are you rosey and rosetta? nice to meet everyone else. i am having trouble with my cholesterol? cannot tolerate statins? any help out there? pat

BBWonwheels 08-06-2005 10:21 PM

Hello everybody,

I'm doing good, but having trouble with my sodium. im trying to get and keep it low but its hard. wat can i do?

nosugarmomma 08-07-2005 12:19 AM

Well Can't sleep

http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_8_2v.gif I have had a real hard time sleeping latley. My sugar has been high and I am having a hard time keeping it down. Lots of stress latley. Maybe things will settle down. I hope. Any suggestions?

paperdoll 08-07-2005 10:54 AM

nosugar stress is a big factor in not sleeping also for you bs. try to block out stress at bedtime, don't go to bed hungry try some milk at bedtime a slice of toast also helps. sometimes a white noise helps.

bb i love salt. guess you have to read labels and throw the salt shaker.but we need a certain amount of sodium for our health.

so far today i have been good, salad planned for lunch.but the kids are coming for supper and don't know what to make.?
pat

nosugarmomma 08-07-2005 02:32 PM

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I will try it tonight. I am going to my moms for supper tonight we are having hamburgers and grilled zuccini. It is really good and I can eat as much as I want. My husbands birthday is tommorow. I have to back a cake for him. Maybe I will make a sugar free one he will never know. LOL. I feel pretty good today and my sugar was 108 this morning. Better than yesterday. See ya'all later. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_8_6.gif

sapphire9 08-08-2005 06:38 PM

Hi Pat - welcome back. Sorry you can't tolerate the statins. I take Zocor and that's doing a good job for me. I guess you'll have to do it with diet and exercise. (which is what we all should be doing anywy.)
BB - the best thing is to read the labels, cook as much from scratch as you can. Use spices (like lemon pepper) to season your food. I've noticed I've been eating more sodium than I should lately.
Well, that will soon stop. I'm going on a medical fast, starting Wednesday. I've been so sedentary the last few years because of orthopedic problems and now that they are somewhat resolved, I've gotten too fat to walk. So I need to lose at least 40 lbs as quickly possible so I can start exercising. I just signed up last week so have only had a few days to get in my last meals. lol. Actually haven't done too badly.

What is a medical fast? I have heard of this twice now and I do not know what ya'all are talking about. Could ya let me know. Thanks. i have been at home now for a week I kinda like it. But I do get bored sometimes. I have been reading the new Harry Potter book. I am up to chapter 15. My sugar is still wacky it bottomed out yeaterday and boy it makes me really tired when it does that. I just want to sleep. I am going to bed now at a decent time so I am getting some sleep at night. Gotta go have to fix supper for the masses. LOL catch ya'all later. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_22_25.gif Me

sapphire9 08-10-2005 03:25 PM

Hi, all. Rosey, glad to see you back on track.
Nosugar, a medical fast is a very lo-cal diet made up solely of food supplements (like powdered Slim Fast) and supervised by a doctor. It involves weekly weighins and medical checkups plus behavioral classes. It's expensive but I reached a point where I needed desparate measures. I start it today. :fr: The doctor took me off two of my diabetes medications and I'm a little nervous about that since I've been in good control. Have you discussed your fluctuating blood sugars with your doctor? Maybe you need more medication.

LinInWI 08-10-2005 04:15 PM

Where do I start??

I have been gone for about 2 years..... I am back again and I need help!
Holy Cow! :(
I have gained a few more pounds while gone and I think I am finally out of denial that I have Diabetes..... :^:
Its time to deal with it I guess.
I've had a "vision" if you will, of what I may become in the next 4 years or so if I don't do something! I'll be 50 then, probably even heavier...not able to walk, and it scares me! I have a 5 year old and I want to see her grow up.
I quit smoking,a really major thing to do, I know, so whats wrong with me! Why can't I lose weight? I thought quitting smoking would be the hardest thing I would ever do, but its not. I have gained and lost the same 10 lbs for the last 2 years, I am getting no where fast. Anyone have any ideas on how to get myself going again?
I am so ready to try again.

nosugarmomma 08-10-2005 07:29 PM

I will find out one way or another in just over 3 weeks if I am a diabetic or not! On a routine blood test it came back after fasting for 12 hours my blood sugar was on the high side, and I had to take a test again, the second came back high also so I now have to have a GTT to confirm it. I have been waiting 3 months now and the appointment is booked in for end of August at the hospital for the GTT.

I have changed my eating habits a lot in the hope it might help but have been testing my own BS in the morning and they are still higher than they should be.... so I fear the worse!

My mum is a type 1 diabetic so I pretty loaded with information about it.... ;) but am still worried for myself.... :(

Hi all. I made it through the weekend, but it was rough. Physically, I was okay, but psychologically I was wanting to continue with my usual weekend food fest. But I didn't. Wish I had all those hobbies you have, Rosey. I have a lot of time on my hands now that I'm not shopping and eating or going out to eat. Sigh. The only thing I'm concerned about now is my blood sugar. The fasting sugar has gone up considerably since I stopped taking Actos and Glucotrol. I may want to go back on it, although I need to be careful about getting low blood sugar. It's especially frustrating since I worked hard to get it down.
How are the rest of you doing?

paperdoll 08-15-2005 10:28 PM

hi everyone we are having beautiful weather. wish i enjoyed it more i am having a bad depression problem otherwise i am in a holding pattern. go to dr, in three weeks maybe i canget some help.
oldest son moved back in the area from kentucky that has got me running plus he is an excellentcook tomorrow he is having us for stuffed pork nchops this is going to make it tough on food choices.
well no sugar sounds like things are going well for you.
rosey i know about the blood draw can't find my veins.the girl almost runs when she sees me. try drinking lots of water before test that helps a little. also take some glucose tablets so if you are shakey you can bring sugar up fast till you get to eat.
rosetta that fast really sounds interesting i wish something like that was offered around here.
catch you all later. pat

nosugarmomma 08-17-2005 12:48 PM

Mmmmm........

Well I am back to not sleeping very well. I guess, it will be like this forever. My husband teases me about sleeping my life away. I guess he is right. I went and applied for a job at the school for sub.teach. but I don't know if I will get it. Wish me luck. Pat, everything will be o.k. are you taking med's for your depression? if not maybe you should go talk to your doctor. I hope you are o.k I know how hard it is to battle depression, I do all the time. Just remember we are all here for ya. :grouphug: Everyone have a nice day and chin up.

sapphire9 08-17-2005 09:10 PM

Hi. Just a quick note to say I've lost 11.8 lbs on the fast. I know I won't lose this much in future weeks but it's a good start. Today I'm a little down and missing food. Have been hallucinating sauerbrauten for some reason  Pat, I hope your depression subsides. I have problems with it myself.
Nosugar - I hope you get that job.

oldwriter 08-17-2005 10:22 PM

Been gone awhile

I have been depressed over money and now my sis may be losing her 4 yr battle with cancer. Both our parents died of cancer and Joyce is my only sibling.
When mom got sick I ate so much I gained 40 lbs. I don't see me doing that especially with different meds and other vit I take .
My sugar is nuts right now. Found out the natural sugar in my tomatoes was most of it. I think, 35 cals med tomato-right? So I was nibbling roma and other tomatoes all thru the day. :o :nono:
Doc is working closely with me to get it under control. It was 355 :yikes: at 9pm one night, so i took 1/2 pill and called him next day.
Cut back sharp on tomatoes. Got the pressure canner out to deal with some of the temptation. Trying to keep busy and will go visit my sis for several weeks. She is on very strick organic foods plus herb vitamins.
Nosugarmomma-have you been tested for sleep apnea? I wear a c-pap mask so I get more room air to keep my throat open. It can cause lots of probs-stroke-heart attack-high blood pressure. They found mine after a mini-stroke.
Will keep a better eye :mag: on my numbers.
Praying for a good day for all of you.

BBWonwheels 08-18-2005 10:50 PM

BBWonwheels 08-24-2005 08:34 PM

can anybody tell me how much gram of fat should a diabetic eat a day?

sapphire9 08-24-2005 09:07 PM

Hi, I've been busy at work and no time to post. I'm down another six lbs. This fast is sure boring, but I just keep reminding myself of the reasons I'm on it. I don't know how long I'll stay on it. My original plan was to stay on it long enough to lose enough weight so I can start walking again. But I'm so happy to see the scale go down again so I may continue. It's expensive though and that might be a factor in how long I stay on it. Just going to take it one week at a time and not think too far in the future. (ooh I am so craving pizza right now!)

Rosey - glad to see you back. I hope your test shows good numbers.

BB - WTG on those 46 lbs! Happy Birthday. :hb: For answers on nutrition you might want to go to the library and look it up.

Pat - Sorry you're still depressed. Glad you had fun at the festival.

Carol - I have some of the same health problems you do. Your sugars are awfully high. Are you taking medication regularly? Actos did a good job of reducing mine.

No sugar - congratulations on the weightloss. Good luck with doc appt.

oldwriter 08-25-2005 09:27 PM

BB- I think it depends on the person how many grams of fat to eat.
Sorry not much help there.
I got off Actos b/c i was sick of being bloated and wanting to eat all the time.
I am on Amaryl and we are still adjusting it. My nerves were shot last week which doesn't help-better now. My face isn't bloated with Amaryl and I don't get the munchies. Feel Like I at least look more like my old self.

BluebonnetDiva 08-28-2005 12:17 AM

Newbie saying hello

Hello everybody,

I just found this board today and am so glad to see a "Dieting with Diabetes" thread. When I was first diagnosed a little over a year ago, I became a total food **** and got my diabetes under control almost immediately. My doctor said it was the fastest he'd ever seen anyone get their H1AC back to normal. I lost thirty pounds over the course of several months, through diet and exercise, and I just felt HIGH. It wasn't that hard. Having diabetes seemed, in a weird sort of way, a blessing. I've been seriously overweight for most of my adult life and nothing ever seemed to work. The threat of complications from diabetes did ... for a while.

Then I had to do a lot of travelling for work, and I was tired and wanted GOOD FOOD, and before you know it ... I was almost back to my starting weight. Not good.

The good news is that my diabetes is still under control. Doctor says that if he didn't know I was on meds, he'd think my chart was normal. But I am almost back to square one with the weight, and I am also battling high blood pressure and slightly elevated LDL cholesterol (that last is a new development).

I've gotten back on the diet and exercise wagon, and re-lost 9 pounds so far. But it's harder this time, and I find myself getting angry that I have to be so careful about what I eat. I hate thinking about food. I want food to be a non-issue. And yet, I know this is never, ever going to go away.

How do you deal with that idea? I mean, none of us would need to lose weight if we didn't love food, but now the wrong kind of food in the wrong amounts can literally poison us. And it's often the foods we love the most. We can't just stop eating, either. Another issue for me is that I often don't experience stomach hunger, but will have a low blood sugar episode with no warning.

I look forward to getting to know this community and sharing ideas and stories!

BBD :smug:

sapphire9 08-29-2005 06:29 PM

Hi, BBD, welcome to our thread. Sorry that you fell off the wagon, but now it looks like you're back on track. I, too, resent having to always think about what I'm eating and how it will affect my blood sugar. But I already have one complication of diabetes (gastroparesis) and don't want anymore. As for signs of low blood sugar, hunger is not necessarily a symptom. More like shakiness. If you're exercising and taking diabetes meds you need to test your blood sugar regularly before and after exercising. Do you have glucose tablets? Have you been to a diabetes educator to give you an overview of living with diabetes? If your insurance covers it that would be a good idea. Anyway, please post often. We look forward to it.
Carol - I had swollen ankles with Actos. Don't believe it caused munchies tho (although I used that as an excuse when I first started taking it). I'm off it now and my ankles are back to normal. I took Amaryl once but got off it when my blood sugar got too low (in the days when I had lost weight and was exercising).

oldwriter 08-29-2005 09:18 PM

Hi everyone

My sugar is getting better-my nerves are better but my weight is up a little-don't panic like I used to b/c it's usually temporary. As long as it slowly goes the right direction-cool.
Out of Amaryl till 1st. Took my old Actos today. Better than none.
Been busyier tho.
Have a great day all.

BluebonnetDiva 08-29-2005 09:39 PM

Thanks Rosettastone. Yes, I went to the diabetic educator when I was first diagnosed. Like so many others, I have truly crappy insurance which does not cover a nutritionist or my diabetic educator, so I don't make regular trips. But I do have glucose tablets stashed in every car, purse, gym bag, etc. !

What is gastropareisis? That does not sound pleasant. I'm sorry you have to deal with it.

Today was Bad

Well here I am again. I put my resume in for that job. Have not heard anything yet. I keep getting these headaches and man I had a bad one today. Lasted allday! So now I am here again not sleeping. I do not iknow how some people can not sleep at nite and still function during the day. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_8_2v.gif Cause I sure can not. I ate cereal and hamburger helper with ranch style beans. Drank lots of water, and still got heartburn. Maybe I need some more milk. But my sugar was good today. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_11_60.gif I still have not gone to the doc yet for my check up. Just have not done it yet but promise I will this week. I hope everyone is doing o.k. Hello everybody! Long time no see. I am all finished with my move across country. Back home in good old Thunder Bay. Hubby and I have started taking our health very seriously, it helps to have his support. We have been walking every second day for 5KM (I am not sure how many miles that would be). My sugars have been low lately I have not had any readings above 200 in more than 6 months now.
One thing I don't understand. We have been exercising for almost one week and both of us have gained 6 pounds. Our eating habits haven't changed either.

Nice to see you all again. Hope to come on a lot more often.

Melissa
