BBD: Gastroparesis is when the nerves in the stomach stop functioning. I started waking up in the morning with the previous night's dinner in the back of my throat - undigested - and sometimes I threw up. Went to the doctor and he diagnosed it. I now take pills (Reglan) before meals and before bed. Ugh. It's a side effect of diabetes (and not one I had ever heard of).
Glen - sorry about your hospital stay. Hope you recover soon. Hi Rosey - you smell winter coming on and we have summer finally down here. It's been in the 80s the last couple of days. Would trade places with you but I wouldn't know what to do with all that salmon and moose. |
Well...............
Well today I am going out of town, for a football game. The only problem is that the rest of the people I am going with are going to want to eat fast food. I guess I will pack me something to eat. Cause my sugar is good and I have not gained any weight since I have been off work. And I want to keep it that way. So I am going to have will power and stick to my guns. Wish me luck http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_7_3.gif

I am lucky to be healthy so far, but in the back of my mind I am always waiting for the other shoe to fall. Two of my relatives died from complications of diabetes --- but they also neglected themselves to death. Still, it's not a pleasant way to go. Hubby and I have gotten into a good regular exercise routine. We go to the gym and/or swim daily, and if we don't do that we go for long walks. When I overindulge, I try to exercise as soon as possible to bring my blood sugar down. And with gas prices so high, I'm thinking about getting bikes for us ---we could ride to the gym instead of driving! ;) |
Morning everyone..its raining today and im babysitting a very bored 7 yr old grdd..so i decided to teach her how to make clothes for her little beanie baby bear..just handstitching..kept her and i busy for hours  but now grma needs a break so cartoons help..i finally got the results of my blood test.. my fasting sugar was 163 and the ac1 was 8.1..sooo instead of med changes the dr wants me to see a nutritionest and try by diet to get the ac1 to 7 and bs to under 140..shouldnt be to hard and any help or re-education will help..i know my eatings been out of control for a while now and maybe this is the wake up call i needed.. :?: also need to get back the exercising thing too.. i really have not had alot of motivation lately..and am content with me the way i am :?: thats not good  isnt the news of the flood and huricane survivors just awful..i feel so sorry for them and wonder where are all those countrys that we have helped over the yrs?? how come they arnt rushing to our aid like the USA does for other disaster victims in other countrys???i want to help but can only do so with prayer and money donated to the redcross..when i see all that devastation makes me truly greatful for the family i have and my home etc.. on that sad note hope you are having a greatful weekend too..(((((hugs)))) rosey

Hi
Hello everyone :twirly:
Rosette- are you sleeping on a wedge to keep the food from backing up? Glen-glad you are feeling better. I had two bouts of sweating reaction sweating today. The one time my sugar was 159 and later was 163-but i haven't seen numbers below 200 very often so assume that I will react less if I can keep my numbers low over time. Just so happy to be in the 100s. Keep on keeping on-we'll get there. :) |
Supplements that help
Have any of you tried some of the holistic medicines and supplements that are available? I'm a big believer in holistic medicine (though I also see an allopathic doctor). Lately I've done some research and have come up with the names of several supplements that are supposed to help lower your blood sugar:
Extract of Asian bitter melon (Momordica charantia) Ayurvedic gurmar (Gymnema sylvestre) Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp) 1,000 mcg / day of glucose tolerance factor (GTF) chromium is also supposed to lower blood sugar and suppress craving for sweets. (I didn't find that it helped my sweet craving, however). 400 mg/day of magnesium (a powerful antioxidant that can help lower blood sugar; it has also been studied in improving diabetic neuropathy at doses of 600mg a day, according to Dr. Andrew Weil). 100 mg/ day of alpha-lipoic acid at a starting dose of 100 mg. I'm giving the bitter melon a try and have added extra magnesium (my multi-vitamin has some, but not enough). We'll see whether it has an effect! |
BBD and Carol: My gastroparesis is under control as long as I take the Reglan before meals and at bedtime. I just need to be careful about portions. I got it because I had let my bs get out of control. That scared me straight for sure. I don't use a wedge. I use a CPAP machine but can only lay down part of the night (I get uncomfortable) and usually sleep reclining in a chair for the rest of the night. I have terrible sleep problems.
Carol - is the sweating because of the higher blood sugar or is it harmonal? BBD: I've heard of the supplements recommended by Dr. Weil but not about the other remedies. Let us know how they work. Another one you might want to consider is co-enzyme Q10 - it's good for the heart. Rosey - I'm sorry to hear about your A1C. Can you get back to Curves now that the summer is over? I hope the nutritionist helps. As for the N.O. disaster, I am horrified at what's happened. Actually, many countries have offered help, including Sri Lanka, which is a poor country still trying to recover the from Tsunami. The real problem is here in the U.S. - it was unconsionable to have left all those poor people in that horrible situation for so long. We have the resources necessary to take care of them, it's just nobody seemed to be in charge and knew what should be done -- and they should have. It's going to be a long time before all those displaced will have normal lives. Now I'll step down from the :soap: |
Hi everyone..just wanted to let you all know that i just got out of the hosp..i was helping my dh install a new door and the dang thing fell on me knocked me backwards and i hit my head on a small hutch..i have a concussion and spent the night in the hosp..im ok.. big lump on my head and stitches still having some dizzyness..nothing broken..boy was i lucky..so if im absent for a few days thats why..((( Hugs))) rosey

Hello.... I have popped in here before but thought I would again, I am Alison and I am 28 living in the UK!
I was diagnosed today with type 2 diabeties have been dieting and exercising for around 4 months and dropped 22 lbs. Have not been all that good this past 2 weeks and gained 3lbs back... I need to get back on track! |
welcome alison. my legs are getting stronger.it's nice to have real food again. :)
glen |
Hi everyone!
The reason I use a wedge is I have a hiatial hernia. Without it I will have acid backing up into my esophagus and that could burn it. And, I am chesty and feel like they are trying to take my breath away. :faint: Also have asthma so feel a little short of breathing room at times.
My sweats for hormonal are a little different. I heard others whose numbers were higher had some sweating as they came down to lower numbers but that the body adjusts. Hefty1-glad your legs are stronger. :) Alison-you're doing wonderfully. :cp: ((((((Rosey and Nosugar))))) I lost another pound-every little bit helps. Have a nice Sunday. |
No, I ain't my motivation seems to have flown off.... I've been stuck for two weeks gained a couple of pounds back and can't motivate myself to do a lot....
I have my first appointment with the nurse this afternoon at the diabetic clinic so we shall see what happens.... |
Hi everyone..im doing pretty good.. had my stitches out yesterday..am still feeling a bit tired but im taking it easy..have apptment to see diebetic nutritionest thursday..hope i can learn some new things and i will share..sugars have been around 140-160 better than what they have been..ive been trying a bit harder..anyways its a sunny day here and i have been working on making dolls clothes for my grdd..i luv to sew and its relaxing..hope you are all doing well ((((((((hugs)))))))) rosey:wave:

HI All, I'm new to this thread. I was diagnosed with Type II last month, but have real issues with my doc diagnosing just based on my HbA1c, which was right on the borderline at 6.0. Looking for a 2nd medical opinion if I can't do metformin or something else other than injecting insulin twice a day.
I started SBD 9/5 and have lost 7 lbs in 10 days - which is a great start for me. I find it's hard to talk about the diabetes with people who don't have it, which is why I joined here. I'm on so much insulin my sugars run in the 80's and 90's mostly. I think they're almost too low as I get low blood sugar reactions at 75 and I really can't be having LBS reactions every other day, they freak me out. Mom had diabetes from having her pancreas removed due to pancreatitis. Dad has Type II, diagnosed when he was about 60. Grandfather had Type II I think it was. Mom and GF died at 62 and I am 43 with a 2 year old, so I must stick around much longer than that! Hope to get to know you all! Kim |
welcome to the boards. it's good start losing weight. eat less carbs and desserts.
:) glen |
Kim - welcome to the thread. Why are you on insulin if your A1c is only a 6? That's pretty extreme. Is your doctor an endocrinologist or a GP? I agree that you need a second opinion from an endocrinologist. The usual treatment for Type II is to try meds first. Also, if you're a six, diet and exercise alone should be able to control somebody with a 6 A1c. I'm not a doctor but I would certainly question the insulin prescription. Good luck and keep posting.
Hi to everyone else. I'm still on my medical fast program and as you can see from my tracker I'm losing weight steadily. Temptations don't abate though and right now I could go for one of the toasted bagels with cream cheese that are floating around the office. |
Thanks, Rosetta, I think the same thing. I was pg at the time I went to the endocrinologist (since miscarried, that's why I didn't start SBD til 9/5) and she said I couldn't take meds while pg. Course now I find out that metformin is routinely given to women up to 12 wks pg. I am so glad to hear that I'm not crazy. Looking for a 2nd opinion now.
OH NO, I would have a terrible time with bagels right now, don't send any to Colorado!! Be strong! Kim |
Hey! Glad to meet you Kim,
I agree-a second opinion is a good idea. The only time I've been on isulin is when I was in the hospital -easier for the nurses i guess. The girls here have a lot of good suggestions. Take care. |

Where is everybody? Is this thread usually pretty quiet? I had a low blood sugar reaction last night and wondered how everybody else treats those. I just hated to eat hard candy, since it's totally Non-SBD, but had to get my sugar back up pronto.
Also, has anybody found a sugar free gum that's not full of sorbitol? That raises your sugar too, just slower than glucose. Meadow - I have heard of yeast infections being related to diabetes, but never bladder infections. The early morning rise in blood sugar may be the dawn phenomenon and you may need to adjust your evening meals/snacks. http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.co...&sid=6&sk=5WZ7 Or it could be a rebound from lows during the night. Definitely something to run by your doc, I think. |
Otto - yeah, this thread has been kind of slow lately. People must be busy with Fall things. There's really no way to treat low blood sugar except with glucose. Glucose tablets, which are available at pharmacies, are recommended by diabetes experts. You can also use fruit juice - keep a supply of those mini cans of juice around. Or in an emergency three sugar cubes. It's more important to bring your sugar back up than to worry about following the diet to the letter. Besides, I don't think one small ingestion of sugar will spoil all your good work.
|
Hi everyone.. rosettas right when that happens you need to get sugars up fast.. at my class last night they said glucose tablets.. juice or soda..i found the class informative.. besides all the basics that we all know we were told every ones diff.. so we are to test before a meal..keep a journal of what we ate paying attention to portions and carbs and then test 2 hrs later to see if the sugars are to high.. they should be around 160 after eating so if they are considerably higher then what you ate was not tolerated by your system..by doing this for several days you will know what foods causes elevation for you..makes sence to me.. also to read labels serving size and amt and the carb content one serving is 15 grms..and its recomended that you have 4-6 servings a meal..and your plate should be 1/2 vegetables 1/4 protein and 1/4 starch..also you should avoid high sugar foods but to pay attention to the carbs not the sugars in foods..anyways not sure if this is new info for us all but it helps to refresh our minds..another class tonite.. hope you are all having a great day and dont mind me sharing my info(((((hugs)))) rosey:wave:

hi... i'm new on this site too but unlike most of you I have been type II for over 10 years. I have never understood proper diet for me tho. I go overboard and freak out over any carbs, then I forget to look at fat and calories. I did have everything under control and was within normal limits for a while, at the time I was working out at the gym 5 days/week and having grilled salmon or salads for dinner every night. That was several years ago tho. I guess maybe I've been fortunate that I've never had any complications or felt sick at all, or maybe that's not so fortunate cuz I have pretty much ignored my diabetes for years. hmmmmm can you be in denial for 10+ years? I do take Actos and also Lipitor for high cholestoral. My bp is great! I quit smoking in March which led to an almost 30 lb gain is what shocked me into action.
So here I am, ready to start eating right and shaping my frame of mind :) In reading your posts, I see a lot of help and inspiration. Best of luck you all of you! |
Wow, iwmonn, you are AWESOME - quitting smoking that is. I quit 6/6/05 and still struggling. In teh past I have always gained 20 lbs when I quit. I didn't this time, but i never lost the 60 from the past 3 major quits!
You will get a handle on the diet/diabetes thing if you put your mind to it. If you can quit smoking I REALLY believe that you can DO ANYTHING! AKrosey - my doc would FREAK OUT if I got to 160 after a meal. I really think she's much too much into tight control for me. Thanks for the info! I had an unexpected visitor today - Aunt Flo. Perhaps she is the reason I haven't lost anything in 5 days even after being pretty darned good on the eating and walking. We shall see when she leaves. Kim |
Hi everyone.. another class tonite..we had to test our blood when we got there.. then we had ameal provided by them.. we had to figure out the carbs etc..then we exercised yup in front of strangers :o and then we learned about colesteral and good fats and bad and protein portions.. before we left we tested our blood again.. mine was the only one that was lower after i ate.. it must have been the exercise.. which they stress as very key in controlling your diabetes.. they ecomennd at least 15 to 30 mint aday of moderate exercise .. i think i can do this..hope this is helping some of you.. will let you know what i learn tomorrow..its all pretty basic but im learning new ways to manage and like the classes..kim.. the guide lines that they use are from the american diabete ***..your sugars should be below 130 or more fasting.. but when you eat they go up.. and they dont want the up cycle to be more than 160.. then they come down again..like a roller coaster..up down up down..by testing before eating and 2 hrs after you can find our what foods make your sugars go crazy high and avoid them..or control the amount of carbs you can tolerate as we are all diff..even tho we all have diabetes..of course you should always do as your dr wants..but if your unhappy get a 2nd opinion..((((((hugs)))) rosey
|
Ottoette: thanks! I'm happy I was able to stop this time. I've tried many times over the last 20 years! This time was different tho. When it got time to order cigarettes (we get them on line cheaper), I just told my hubby not to lol... i was tired of paying so much for them. We could do so much more with that money. And I haven't looked back. I think one day at work I was desperate for a smoke and my friend stuck a stick of Big Red in my mouth instead. I guess I was just ready this time. Now If I can get my food cravings under control as easily............. lol.
Things there are going well, I see my nutritionalist next week and will be taking her a list of questions this time. No more just saying I understand when I really don't!! Good luck to everyone and you all have a wonderful day!!! |
Hello everybody,
Welcome to the board Kim. I have had numerous bladder infections over my lifetime as well as yeast infections, these were the only signs of diabetes that I ever really had and my acanthosis nigricans. My sugars have been pretty high lately (for me) between 7-12 (125-160). Lots of stress to deal with. Looking for a good job, living with inlaws, other things. On a good note we have been getting more exercise. Nothing much more has been really going on. Melissa |
Hi Rosey. Thanks for the information from your classes. Most of it I've heard but it's good to be reminded. My doctor doesn't really get into the details of what to eat etc. He leaves that to the diabetes educators who are very good.
Iwmonn: Welcome to the thread. Congratulations on quitting smoking. I finally did it in 1978 and it was the hardest thing I've ever done (except keep my weight down and stable  ) If you go back to that diet you were on a few years ago and step up the exercise, you will probably be able to control your blood sugar without any medication at all. I was taking Lipitor, now take Zocor (HMO made me switch). Until I started a medical fast 6 weeks ago, I was taking Actos (15 mg.), Glucotrol and Glucophage. Now I'm just taking Glucophage. It's not as good alone as the Actos in controlling blood sugar and now my morning sugars average about 146. But I'm losing weight. Kim - Congratulations to you, too, in quitting smoking. You will feel so much better. I don't test my blood sugar after meals. I guess I should but my meals are so wierdly scheduled now that I'm on this program. Melissa - Once your life settles down you will be able to work on your diet easier but in the meantime you are getting in good exercise time which will help relieve some of the stress. I'm plugging along on my fasting program and losing steadily (but not fast enough to suit me  ). I'm not exercising right now but will try to start soon. |
Hi everyone.. sunny and windy here today..its really fall out.. the leaves are blowing everywhere :smug: i finished my classes.. when my dr first persribed them for me i was not a happy camper.. didnt think i needed them :?: but after completing them i realize i was so far off the wagon its pitiful.. am now keeping a journal and testing bs more often and really counting those carbs..and exercising at least 15 min a day..my sugars are still bouncing around while i figure out what works and what doesnt..im determined to make this work tho.. so how are all of you doing?? hope your all having a great weekend((((((hugs)))))))) rosey:wave:
|
Helloooooooooooo..so where is everyone????? its still windy and cold here..ive been trying to stay busy so i stay away from the kitchen..am trying to use all the info i learned but am finding that this carb counting (altho easy to do) that im hungry all the time..so what do you all do to fill up.. im eating salads and vegies some fruit but crave bread and crackers etc etc..my sl,s have come down some but not like i want :?:..hope you are all having a good week..im the one with no finger nails..hmmmmm are there carbs in them  seriously im frustrated cant you tell..i guess i want instant success..and i know thats unrealistic..hope to see some of you back its to quiet in here.((((hugs)))))) rosey:wave:
