I'm always tired....

  • I am always tired and it is preventing me from exercising as much as I should.
I know I have Hypothyroid, and am on meds. I was supposed to be "normal" as of summer last year so it could have changed, but I can't get it checked yet as I have changed insurance companies and that is considered a pre-existing condition. Boo...so I have to wait a few months (around September) til I can get rechecked.
I have also been considered anemic a few times since childhood but have "thelassemia" or something like that, and cannot be given iron.

Anyways, I recently graduated college and started a new job. I figured I would give myself time to adjust and get used to it. It is 9 hours, and there is the stress of learning it ect. But it has been almost 3 months...I should be adjusted!??!

I am so tired, it is not an excuse or laziness. I am exhausted. I can barely keep my eyes open after work to drive myself home. I got to bed early and get 8 and a half to 9 or so hours. So, I do get plenty of sleep.
And I can barely keep my eyes open after work, so don't tell me to push through and work out. I don't want to kill myself trying to run and fall asleep or something...
And many people recommend working out in the morning...but I am tired ALWAYS. I wake up tired sometimes too...and I don't want to force my body to workout and then fall asleep during work or something. that would NOT be good....

Any other ideas? Like vitamins or suggestions like that...
I was thinking of just exercising on the weekends. Would that be ok?
I am not trying to lose weight anymore, I am just trying to maintain my weight/size...but exercise was a healthy habit and part of my healthy lifestyle I was trying to continue...
  • I've got the hemoglobin BARTS version for Asians and passed it to my kid.
My endoc tells me I have "tiny, wimpy" red blood cells. I also turned out low for b12, vit D, and magnesium. But my iron is fine -- so don't think it's only iron. lack in b12 can affect your iron.

You might want to check up on those others and check that your current multivtamin and multimineral supplements are good for your needs. Because if you have been chronically low, you may need more than the norm to replenish before going back to maintaining levels of the supplements. Get some bloodwork done.

Even though I was taking a multi I was low on B12, D, and Mag but once I put those into my routine I felt a lot better.

Ease up on the exercise -- if your thyroid is because of exhausted adrenals, that just stresses your adrenals more.

I know you say you get 8 - 9 hrs in bed but are you sleeping? Could you have sleep apnea? That may be something to think about.

But I'm no doc -- so def bring all this up in your check up and don't run yourself into the ground in the meanwhile.

    GL!

  • GNC has a great women's time release vitamin...Women's Ultra Mega....green pill...it gives you tons of energy if you take 2 a day.

For some reason if I take it during the day it makes "me" tired....weird?....so I take it at night. Sometimes you have to back off to 1 pill of day because it does give you energy.

My friend tried the womens active "pink" pill and she got the same results. I believe they both have iron, so you may want to look into that before trying.

I cannot believe you cannot have your thyroid levels checked to make sure you are on the adequate dose of medication?
    LGW
  • There are multiple possible causes of chronic fatigue. Go to your doctor and get tests run. If exercise is exhausting you, then don't exercise. Keeping yourself going and hanging onto your job are far more important. The level of fatigue you describe is not normal and is not going to be cured by going to the health food shop and making a wild grab for some supplements.
  • I go thru phases like this , i bought some iron tablets and they helped a little , but i find i have a very strict sleeping pattern. I cannot have less than 8 hours or im realy bad tired and 8-10 im cool over 10 can usually have a tiring efect also.

All i can suggest is if possible try n make time for some "ME" time and get enough sleep everynight xx
  • Go to the health food store and buy a pound of raw pumpkin seeds. The shells have been removed.
Just eat 2 tablespoons every day.
    They will give you energy.
Ball players eat the seeds during games to give them energy.
    They work.

My 90 year old neighbor put them on his oatmeal every morning. He said they gave him so much energy he could work all day in his yard. And he was not tired the next day.

  • Thanks for understanding! I've asked on other weight loss centered message boards and everyone suggests exercising, saying it will give me more energy...well I don't think it does! I think it makes it even harder to get through the next day...so thanks for not pushing that.
I know it is ridiculous I can't be treated for my thyroid because it is preexisting. But that is the insurance company policy...makes no sense. But I think in September I can get those checked...
I can check out some vitamins. I do take a multi-vitamin that has 100% of A, C, D, and Folic Acid and several of the B vitamins (like Niacin, and Riboflavin)
I was thinking I could go check out the pharmacy and see if they can recommend something to supplement what I am getting that I could be missing...
  • Your doctor should have told you if you have thalassemia that your blood cells are not the same shape as normal rbc's and therefore you are probably anemic and not being able to take iron ( the heme portion of your rbc is altered) you would be tired. I don't know if there is a whole lot you can do about it, just healthy diet and exercise.
  • I would recommend having your doctor run a full blood chemistry work up. This should look for any deficiencies or excessive levels. I know that if you have too much of a good thing it can make you feel pretty crappy too.

My only other thought is maybe you aren't sleeping as well as you think you are? Good luck to you and I hope you find something to help you get through your day!
  • I'm no insurance expert, but if you don't feel well, won't your insurance pay for a sick visit to the doctor? Then you could get checked out sooner - maybe there's something else going on besides your thyroid?
  • geritol
I take the multivitamins but im trying to get pregnant so I take Geritol
  • Multivitamins are not intended to treat this level of fatigue. If you have a serious vitamin deficiency, which is quite rare with most vitamins (iron and B12 deficiencies are relatively common, though), then it should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. Please don't think that this level of fatigue is something normal, or something that you can just treat yourself at home without bothering to get a diagnosis.
  • So go in because you feel SICK.

But do get labs run now. If it is something else causing this kind of fatigue, you get it seen to faster!

  • As other people have said there are multiple reasons for feeling fatigued (anemia and dehydration for example). Myself it was that I have multiple food intolerences and before I cut out those foods I felt a lot like you described, just dragging.
  • Thalassemia is a serious condition and you need your blood work done ASAP!
