Just a vent about healthcare...

  • I so need to get this off my chest without screaming it at my family members lol.

I have been diagnosed with several medical conditions: allergies, asthma, migraines, high blood pressure, acid reflux, and some food allergies. Most of these diagnoses took place early in life, the most recent was 6 years ago. To manage my conditions, I currently see three different doctors: an allergist, general practitioner, and gastroenterologist. Currently I am prescribed ten different prescription medications (including birth control pill) and three over the counter meds.

I have no insurance as I have been out of work for 2 1/2 years and exhausted my COBRA without obtaining new insurance making me ineligible for private insurance due to several preexisting conditions (nope Obamacare has no requirement for insurers to cover preexistings, so they won't).

I just went to the pharmacy to fill prescriptions for two new nasal sprays for my allergies. Imagine my shock when they add up to over $100 each. Over $100 for some liquid you spray up your nose, seriously????

This now brings my total for all medications, prescription and nonprescription to $700 per month. This is ridiculous. I can't afford this every month.

I am in the application process for law school to begin attending January 2011. My mother lost her job a few months ago and is receiving unemployement. My dad is retired and receives a substantial pension, but not one that can support $700 for medicine since both my parents also take several medications for their obesity related illnesses.

If I can get into school I have the opportunity to obtain student insurance with no restriction on preexistings, and can take enough student loans to pay for the copays and premiums.

I'm a little stuck on how to make it through the next four months tho, and of course there is always the possibility I won't be accepted into law school.

Thanks to anyone who made it all the way through this, I have been stressing out about this for a few months now since my mom lost her job (I live with my parents who support me until I can support myself).

There are no social service programs available to me due to my dad's perceived high income as well as my grandmother who also lives with us. Yes there's a lot coming in, but it all goes right back out to drs and pharmacies.

I'm so glad I'm on the right track with my diet and exercise so maybe someday I can cut out some high blood pressure meds, although since I started needing it at age 19, it may just be genetic and unrelated to weight.

    Thanks for letting me vent
  • Try looking to order your medications through Canada- my husband and I did this when insurance refused to cover a medication and wanted us to pay like $300 a month for it. I was able to obtain 90 day supplies for $30.

I know it's frowned upon but $700 a month is INSANE when I bet you can get it for 10% of that in Canada for many meds.

I tried to PM you the site I use but you turned off your pm's.
  • I'll turn them on, I haven't used PMs so I'm assuming default setting is off. Please PM me the link if you don't mind.
  • Ask your doctor if there is another medication you can try that has a generic. Often, you can change medications and save significant money. And if the prescription has a generic, check and see if any stores near you have a discount on that (Walmart sells many generic medications for $4 a month, or $10 for a 3-month supply, including many allergy and high blood pressure medications). Other retailers have launched similar programs.
  • I use the Canadian Pharmacy www.PlanetDirect.com. You will have to mail, fax or email them your prescriptions. I've saved a lot. Also, Canada has generics for medications that we can't get here. My Spiriva and Symbicot are $725 per month here and I get 3 months from them for $254 using their generic. No generic equivalent available in US. I have other prescriptions as well so I save hundreds every month. Check them out. They are fast and direct.

You can also go to drug manufacturers websites and apply for help paying for your drugs. If you have been out of work for 2-1/2 years, try your state's Medicaid. You may get everything doctor visits and drugs for just a few dollars a month.
  • My husband and I have had to find ways to save money on our medications (when we were both working, the "retail" price for our medications was about $1800 a month).

I would highly recommend Sam's Club (I don't believe you need to be a member to get prescriptions) and Walmart. Get their price list (most are $4, some are $6 and $9). Take the list with you to your doctor, and tell him or her that you need to be price conscious. Ask your doctor for samples.

My doctor is great. He actually has the Walmart/Sam's discount list downloaded or input into his Blackberry, so whenever I need a new medication or a change in medication, he checks the list first.
  • What state do you live in? Almost every state has coverage for the un-insurable. I am an insurance agent in Colorado and here we have covercolorado.org which now operates on the Rocky Mountain Health Plans network and is true insurance. You can also contact the drug companies for your monthly drugs. If you let me know your state, I will find out for you what your options are.
  • Some of the ailments you suffer from may also be helped through diet. I have suffered from acid reflux for years and since changing to a more plant based diet have seen a dramatic decrease in my symptoms. I have not gone vegan or even vegetarian for that matter but have really cut back on the animal products in my diet. I have never had a problem with migraines but have heard others have also had some success with certain dietary changes.
