Talking I am a hypothyroid person!

I have had hypothyroidism for over 40 years. A nurse practitioner decided I was using the pills for weight loss and didn't really need them. She put me on an extremely low dose and then did a blood test.

Seems the test came back positive for hypothyroid and an increase in medication. Though it will take weeks to get the medication into my system, I have hopes of losing on the South Beach Diet. I did have a slight weight loss during the time I was on a minimum dose of thyroid, but hope to get to some serious weight loss soon.

As soon as I get my energy back, I hope to exercise again. Life is looking better and better for me.

Thanks for listening (reading),

Sharon

Hypothyroid here as well. On 100 mcg daily. Need to have mine rechecked.
I'm not doing well with this weight loss.
Hope you can get your levels straightened out.

severely hypothyroid here, too. Hashimoto's.

I haven't had trouble losing yet, since I just started trying to lose, but I am sure I will come across obstacles as I go. How are you ladies losing? I joined Jenny Craig and have been using the FIRM for exercise.

What an insane woman! Take a patients meds away b/c of assumptions and prejudices and THEN test. I would have told her off. You could have gotten sick. weeks tells me she uses t4 so chances are you took the test with the meds you were currently taking and therefore need even MORE on top of that. What a twit!

For me it was hyperthyroid first - then hypothyroid. I think there are lots of people - medical professionals included - who don't really understand the full impact of hypothyroid. In fact, you see that on TV or the media sometimes - someone will be talking to an overweight person and joke, "Yes, I know you have a "thyroid" problem" - like that's some made up excuse for their weight issues.

My hyperthyroid was treated because my heart was beginning to enlarge because it had to work so hard to try to keep up with my metabolism (I was very thin then - that's the one thing about it I miss !) I thought I was going crazy at the time - my memory was even worse, I'd get winded just walking up a flight of steps, my hair was falling out, I would choke constantly, my periods were almost uncontrollable. Then after treatment, I gained 40 lbs in 3 months! This is all about 7 years ago and I am just now starting to take it off.

Hopefully the crazy woman who took away your meds was someone 40 years ago and has long since retired. And, that you find a doc that will really pay attention to what is going on with your body. If your thyroid isn't functioning properly and you're not treated for it, it can have serious consequences for your long term health. Aside from depression and the consequences of being overweight it can, at its most extreme, lead to death. Sadly, the symptoms most people have just seemed like you're getting old. Since I am anyway, I don't need anything to make that worse.

I also have hypothyroidism. I take 175 mcgs. Have been hypothyroid for 10 years now! I do believe it makes losing weight harder, but we can do it!

Wow, i can't believe she lowered your dose *then* tested your levels... craziness... I hope you find your self a new health care provider, this one is a quack. I have been hypo for 8 years now, taking 100mcg daily. my 11 yo son was born hypothyroid and is currently on 112mcg daily.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging posts. I am losing weight and feeling better. I would like to get rid of the nurse practitioner, but I am on medicaid and she is the medical facilitator for my area. I have to find a way to deal with her. Thank you again for seeing me through my low point.

The nurse practitioner is under the supervision of a physician - demand to see or communicate with the doctor.

I've had hypothyroid for about 5 years now too. I take 100 MCG. I started my weight-loss journey and I've lost 20 pounds now averaging about 3 - 5 pounds a week ( eating 2100-2400 calories but walking 5 miles a day + 40 minute exercise video ) and no problems yet. Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing the whole way!

Today was a great day! In January my thyroid checkup showed that my levels were a little higher than the normal range, so my dr. changed my med slightly (from 250 to 200) and wanted me to come back in April to have my levels checked again. So, here I am 3 months later having lost 27 lbs! His response was very gratifying! At first he said, "Is this weight right?" - and I said, "It is indeed!" He proceeded to ask me all about how I'd lost the weight. He was really excited for me! He asked me what my goals were and talked about where I needed to be for a healthy BMI, etc. It was great to come full circle like that. Of course, my weight loss is probably going to mean my thyroid meds are still off, but that's just fine, I'd rather be taking less anyway!
