Wink I'm basically new here

Hi fellow diabetes sufferers,

I have written on this website before. I followed the low-carb group for quite awhile when I began a low-carb diet during the summer. I stuck with the diet for the 2 week induction period, and didn't lose any weight. Additionally, I found I was hungry, even though you're not suppose to be, and also, that my blood sugars would drastically drop during the day.

Therefore, I opted to scrap low-carb and haven't been on any particular weight loss plan. A little bit about me: I'm 40 yrs. old and weigh tooooo much. My husband is in the military and we have just relocated to England a few months ago (our 2nd time here). I may have had diabetes before this, but I developed gestational diabetes when I had my 1st daughter at age 28. It has been an ongoing problem since then, and I have never had any control over my blood sugars, even with medication. I'm sure I could be a candidate for insulin, but I refuse to take this final step.....After a lifetime of dieting, I am going to pursue gastric bypass surgery. This may not even be approved, but I'm going to try. This may sound like I'm trying to take the easy way out (knowing the surgery can be risky & has side effects), but I can no longer fight this battle alone. I really feel that the only way I'm going to lose weight and keep it off is if my stomach can't hold much food.

My children are 10 & 12 and besides the fact that I don't want to die from my weight or complications of diabetes.....you know what.....I want to be able to enjoy my children. I want to go bike riding with them, and get on the floor and goof off with them, or go canoeing and so much more. Things I can't or won't do now because of my size. I won't even mention the fun I had on the plane ride over here (like struggling in the seat). I don't want to live like this anymore.

I pray we can ALL find the way to achieve a healthy lifestyle and weight. I'm certainly willing to provide support for any/all of you who desire it. Even if surgery would be approved for me, I know that I will still need to make massive changes in my life and begin eating healthy and exercise, too. Let's support each other, okay.
Thanks for listening.........Robin

Hi Robin
I too, have diabetes, and control it with exercise, diet and some medication. I don't normally post on this board but I come by and read sometimes and this morning I read yours.
About three years ago my DH and I were in Hawaii on our winter holiday and we met a couple there that we liked very much. She was very much over weight, and at that time I had recently joined WW and lost I think about 20# at the time. Anyway, during one of our talks she told me that she too, had recentlyjoined WW was even going to the meetings in Hawaii while on holidays. I told her that I thought that was great. She said that 4 years ago she had opted to have gastric bypass surgery and had lost quite a bit of weight (I forget how much she said), but then just started eating again like she always had, and gained much of the weight back again. I told her that I thought that with the surgery your stomach was made smaller and you could only eat small amounts of food because you felt full. She said yes that was true........except, as overweight people we do not ONLY eat when we are hungry and we sure don't ONLY eat what is good for us. So, slowly, over a short period of time the weight was back. Her daughter had also had the surgery about the same time, and had also gained the weight back and was planning on having the surgery again, if she could find a doctor that would do it a second time. As of now, (as far as I know, the daughter did not have the surgery a second time) and I don't know how either her or her Mom are doing with their weight.
Robin, you are right, your doctor may not approve you for surgery because of your diabetes. Whether you have the surgery or just follow a healthy weight loss program is up to you, except that even if you have the surgery you will still have to follow a healthy weight loss program and exercise on a regular basis because the weight will come back and of course the need to control your diabetes. I would suggest that even now, while you wait to see about the the surgery you join a program like WW or perhaps your doctor could set up an appointment for you to see a dietitian who could monitor you now and after the surgery. Which ever route you follow I hope you are successful.

Robin:
reading your story got me thinking. I understand where you are coming from. Before you opt for such a surgery. Please contact me so we can talk. I have a few ideas that may be of interest to you. I have diabetes and have had great success with ease and fun using a low glycemic system from Glycolean. Have you ever heard of it? I use to be a military wife as well and I commend you. I never was a big fan of the transfers. I hope we can talk soon. [email protected]
