Hiding out with the new evaporative cooler and a nice cool house!!! yay! After four years, I finally talked DF into buying a cooler. After all the struggles yesterday, we finally enjoyed a cool house! (first one was busted when we took it out of the box...)
I've been following my diet plan to the T. Haven't lost anything since earlier in the week, but I'm hopeful. We shall see. Skye is on the mend, finally. Off and running! |

Hi gang. I've never posted in this particular forum before but I am a Type 2 and thought I could use some support.
Just a quick note about the gas problem mentioned above. I have noticed that whenever I buy and eat chocolates or candy sweetened with Maltitol the "end" result is horrible, explosive gas. The last time I suffered the consequences of eating this stuff was last week when I bought a bag of Weight Watchers chocolates (1 pt each but who stops with 1??) Ohmygawd! How I suffered for my sins. Never again. Anyhow, my story is that I was diagnosed Type 2 about 12 years ago and was able to control the blood sugar with diet and exercise for about 8 years. Then, I guess my excess weight caused it to escalate and I've been on Metformin for the past four years and recently, my doctor added Gliclizide (sp). I'm also taking thyroid meds and Altase. I feel like a walking pharmacy. I've been going to Curves since this time last year and in the first six months lost about 6 lb but since last November, I have gained back 10. WHen a person is over 100 lb overweight, even 10 extra pounds can have a devastating effect. With me, in combination with springtime allergies, it has caused breathing problems which have prevented me from going to Curves or doing much of anything else. My doc gave me an inhaler thingy because he thought I might have allergy related asthma but, so far, it hasn't seemed to help. I just know it's the extra pounds. It seems that once I get over 275, I begin to get very winded. Anyhow, sorry for the novel here. Just wanted to introduce myself and tell you a bit about me. BTW, I'm 63, married with two grown up daughters. One has two post teen sons and the other has a 2 1/2 yr old daughter. I have a large garden which keeps me busy but it doesn't help me lose weight. Is anyone here on a specific diet that actually works? I think I've tried 'em all, to no avail. |
LINDA: I can relate to your frustrations on losing weight. They say losing helps the diabetes, but being diabetic makes it nearly impossible to lose! Add in your thyroid problems, and it probably seems futile. I too have thyroid problems, and for over six or seven years I have been struggling to lose ANYTHING. I did lose about 50 using drugs under a doctor's supervision, but my thyroid got worse, and I had surgery and I am back losing 30 of the same dang pounds. Sugarbusters has worked well for me, though slow. As my insulin resistance got worse and worse, it got impossible to lose anything, but at least I was not gaining. I was diagnosed with type 2 a couple months ago and have focused on getting my sugars under control. The doctor started me on glimeperide, which is a sulfonylurea and causes weight gain. Grr. I am now on Metformin as well, and started Byetta last Tuesday. The Byetta has done amazing things to my sugar levels and I have actually lost about 5 pounds since Tuesday! I am very encouraged about it. I exercise a lot, and really stick to Sugarbusters carefully... I think there are a number of good diets that will work. Weight Watchers Core, Sugarbusters, South Beach, even Atkins. The most important thing is to pick one you can live with, and stick to it. Also, exercise is really important. Even if you just walk 30 minutes a day. If you can't do Curves can you go to a mall and walk in the air conditioning? Even slow, strolling really helps my glucose levels. Or how about water aerobics? I have a pool and its been so awesome to hop in the pool and 'water jog' for 30 minutes. It just is so effortless, and there is no wear and tear on the joints. Hang in there...keep in mind if you at least stay the same, you are not gaining. Stick around, ok? Maybe we can help each other get this stuff figured out!

Hello everybody . . . Just had my post almost finished and then I spilled water on my escape key . . . goodbye post . . . so here we go again. :p
Nova Scotia is still rainy, warm, and humid. :( At least I'm still keeping the migraine at bay with lots of little naps. :) The weather is supposed to continue like this into Wednesday and boy it is getting tiresome. :( ROSEY . . . Glad to hear you had so much fun shopping. You know, I think we all feel like everybody is always judging us when, in fact, most people have too many concerns of their own to even think about us. Don't worry about it, kid . . . just enjoy. Wow, the mental picture of you doing wheelies in Walmart certainly helps to lift my spirits on this dull, dull day. JOSIAN . . . Congratulations on getting cool, girl. So glad to hear that Skye is feeling better. Bet she is enjoying the cool house at least as much as her human companions . . . maybe even more. MONET . . . Wow, so glad the Byetta is working so well for you. Unfortunately I can't find any indication that it is available in Canada or even that it soon will be. I know that a couple of the other meds mentioned in the same article that you posted are currently under review here; but no mention of Byetta, yet. :( LINDA . . . Here's a big welcoming  for you. Glad to have you with us. I think you will like it here. Hope we will all be seeing lots less of you, lots more often. :D Now . . . brace yourself . . . because this is where it starts to get weird . . . I am also a Canadian. Currently in Nova Scotia although originally from Ontario. I also have two grown children (sons) and three grandchildren (two girls, one boy). I am also 63 and my birthday is February 25, 1943 (yep, I read your profile) . . . are you hearing that eerie music, too? :listen: and . . . my name is Linda. Obviously, I'm also a type II diabetic (for about 15 years, now) and am struggling to lose weight. I take glyburide, metformin, actos, and insulin was addded to my meds about 4 years ago. I also take medication for blood pressure and cholesterol. Wow does that insulin ever do a great job of packing on the weight. Weight loss is possible, but it is slow going as you can tell by my ticker. I'm not on any special plan, just follow the CDA guidelines and then enter my choices into a self-designed Excel program that calculates calories and percentages of nutrients and also tracks my weight-loss and blood glucose controls. Well, gang, let's see if I can get this posted this time . . . keeping fingers away from the escape key should help. Have a great afternoon/evening moving and shaking and heading in the great downward direction. Here's some :dust: to help us keep on doing the right stuff. See you soon. :carrot: |
Seems we have Canadian Linda-twins! :)
How wierd is that? |
Morning everyone..just a quick hello.. we are going to anchorage to pick up my family today.. weathers rainy and crappy:?: but im so excited.. be back tomorrow..have a great day chickies and one rooster..dont forget your smiles..pass them on..(((((hugs))) rosey

Don't think I've done too bad, alot of walking, will find out Thursday. I love those carts in Walmarts, use them when I'm having a bad foot day. They don't hold enough stuff. Better get back to work. Judy S |
Hey everyone! It is official weigh in day over on the Sugarbusters forum. I was ecstatic to hop on the metal monster this morning and find SEVEN pounds gone since Tuesday. Its a freakin' miracle! My morning bg was 82! Byetta is really working for me!

Hi everybody . . .
Surprise, surprise . . . it's raining in Nova Scotia . . . wow this is getting tiresome. I'll have to start checking around for Ark Construction Plans. :( The worst part seems to be that there is no respite from the humidity no matter how hard it rains. :( Hi JOSIAN  . . . it's beyond weird. I think it's all the way to 'scarey'. Certainly hope my BC twin hasn't been scared away. I was looking forward to having a sister. :D Hi ROSEY  . . . sorry you didn't get better weather for the great pick-up day. Knowing you, though, you'll be generating your own sunshine. Have a good trip and try not to laugh and cry too much. Hi JUDY  . . . glad to see you back. Hope you had a great time and that the weigh-in is good to you on Thursday. Hi MONET  . . . that is absolutely fantastic. So happy for you, girl. WOW. Well, gang, guess that's it for now. Got to go get some more water to drink. I'm retaining something fierce because of all the humidity, I guess. Hope I can get rid of some of it before my WWI. Take care and keep it moving and shaking and heading in that great downward direction. See you all later. :carrot: |
Hi, all. So many posts, it's hard to keep up. Woo--that's spooky about the two Lindas born in Canada on the same day and year. My birthday is February 25 too, but 1946. Welcome to the thread. My doctor wanted me to go back to glucotrol but he also wants me to lose weight so I'm just on Glucophage for now. I know about that chemical in sugar free food that causes gas and worse. I ate one too many sugar free Mentos and that did it for me.
Monet - gastroparesis is when the stomach muscles slow down or stop altogether and food doesn't get processed into the intestines. A couple of years ago I was waking up in the morning with my dinner bubbling up my throat and throwing up. I was full all the time and couldn't eat. It's a side effect of diabetes. Now I take pills to get the muscles moving. I'm doing fine. Congratulations on your weight loss and your low blood sugar. Byetta certainly seems like a wonder drug. Rosey - that's great about the cart. Makes shopping a lot more fun. Don't run anyone down, though. :D You must be in 7th heaven now with your family there. Hope you have a nice visit. Nosugar - glad to see you back. Make time to see the foot doctor. Your health depends on it. Speaking of foot doctors, I see mine tomorrow. Got to talk about my orthotics one of which seems to be causing knee trouble. |
Wow, another Canadian Linda with the same birth date AND diabetes. How eerie is that!? THanks for the warm welcome although the prognosis on losing weight with diabetes sure isn't very encouraging. I really thought with the gliclizide keeping my blood glucose under the danger zone number that I'd be losing some weight but it hasn't happened.
There's no way I can mall walk as suggested above. I have a spondylosis problem in the lower spine and that causes pinched nerves across the hips. Walking on hard surfaces is very painful for me. I do go to the pool three times a week when I'm not having this breathing problem and I usually walk about half an hour in the shallow pool (waist deep) and then deep water jog in the deep pool for another half hour. No worries about me sinking. I'm sure it would take a torpedo. Skinny people are amazed that I can hang vertically in the water without moving a muscle. I suppose that's one benefit of being fat. LOL Once this lung problem clears up, I plan to get back to Curves three times a week. It's just that right now, I'm afraid I'd collapse with the exertion. I sure hope that puffer thingy starts to work soon. |
Good Morning, gang . . .
Nova Scotia is still too hot and too humid but the sun is peeking through a little bit this morning; so I guess I'll pack the 'ark-building-plans' away again. ;) Hopefully the worst is over for a bit. Now, if the humidity would just drop down into the 'comfy' range. :^: ROSETTA  . . . The 'no-sugar-added' ice cream does the 'tummy-bubbles' bit on me; but it tastes so good that once in a while it seems worth it. Definitely looks like we've got February 25 covered. We'll have to have a big party next year. LINDA  . . . Glad to see you again, soul sister. Just hang in there, girl. Patience is more than a virtue for the diabetic trying to lose weight . . . it's an absolute must. ;) Good for you with the water aerobics. Well everybody hope you all have a great day of moving and shaking and heading in the downward direction. See you later. Keep on doing the right stuff and the rewards will be sure to follow. :carrot: |
You know, I should be posting here rather than on the South Beach Forum. I feel like a fraud being the MOD over there as my weight is pretty much the same. Of course part of it is being Type II diabetic. It's only been the past three years that I've even seen ONEderland and I pop back up into TWOville very quickly. LindaBC and I have the same problem, I guess. I do wish there was a pool close to here but it's the boonies which means a 40 minute drive to get to one. I really don't have that kind of time.
Monet, that's a wonderful weightloss! I wish I could get some Lizard Juice from my doc! Frog spit wouldn't work, I guess - I have lots of those down by the creek! Meowee, we have steamy weather here right now. It rained this morning, the sun came out and steam rose from the deck and now it's pouring again. Weird weather and it just may continue until Canada Day weekend. See you all again when I wander over from South Beach which works well as a diabetic diet, by the way. I'll try to post more and get to know you chickies plus Hefty1. We're all in this together. |
Hi RUTH . . . Glad to have you join us. Don't you be a silly, you are definitely not a fraud. I'm sure nobody on SBD (or anywhere else) expects you to be little miss perfect. All any of us can do is our best.
WOW, getting into onederland someday is one of the things that keeps me going. :^: This darn old disease certainly complicates things, but together we can all do it. Hope to see you over here with us whenever your many moderator duties let you have an extra minute or two. |
